New Badge Idea - The Size Collector Badge
on: August 22, 2025, 03:51:42 AM
What do y'all think of creating a new badge for collections of different sized SAK's.  Could be multiple levels of the badge, for example:

Level one: post photo of 3 different sized SAK's
Level two: post photo of 5 different sized SAK's
Level three: post photo of 10 different sized SAK's

Victorinox and Wenger both acceptable.

I think it's a great idea, Lazar.  See if you can get one of the mods to approve it and make a badge.  Best wishes.  G

ok, I ran this past the supreme court. But they said I shouldn't bother them again, so I told Grant and the other mods here, and they are ok with it. So, I'll make the badges and add them to the list soon.

  Congrats to friend lazar and friend Reamer for making this thing a reality.  30 day challenges are entertaining, but it's good to have another collector-type event where you can show off some of your stuff and get a badge in the process.  Best wishes.  G

Just bear with us, folks. We are trying to determine the specifics of the badge tiers. I'll make the badges soon, but please note I am suffering from a bad sunburn so it may be a few days.

Sunburns are no fun.  We used to have an aloe vera plant.  When I had a sunburn, I'd cut one of the leaves off, split it half and lay a piece on the worst part of my sunburn.  To me, that provided better relief than anything I could find in the store.

Cool idea! I think I'm solidly at level 2 right now. Reminds me that I should give my 111mm some carry time...

@Z1913 - Fantastic photo - And I love that you've shown interesting versions of many of the sizes.

@Everyone - Please give RP some time - I am sure he has not forgotten -
Plus he's not at home at the moment - So things may take a little longer

I saw the Greek flag on his space, so I figured he must be getting some nice sun there.  Reamer does what he says, in my experience.  A big shout out to him for his help with many things already.  Best wishes.  G

Dear fellow size SAK enthusiast! Regarding SAK sizes I have a couple questions and would be great to get your views and thoughts:

1.There are models based on regular sizes (58-65-74-75-84...) with slightly different physical lenghts. I am aware about two examples - Vic Deluxe based on 58 Classic measure 56mm and Wenger Nature series based on Wenger 75mm VIP measures per sakwiki only 69mm. Do you consider them as separate size category or do they fall into the base 58 and 75mm sizes for you? Are you aware about any other similar examples?

   2. Do you include into your size collection as well speSmurfpillsed models like various pruning Vic knife, Evoke folders etc. or they are not really SAKs to you? Pruning knife M is for example 110mm, Evoke 136mm etc.

3.Why is the original Wenger Ranger models described as 120mm? In fact it has very similar lenght to the 130mm New Ranger. I measured them and I got 130mm (130,5 to be precise) for the New Ranger when the keyring nub is included. When I measured the original Ranger at the same spot - including keyring nub - I got 129mm, excluding the keyring nub it is 125mm. Would you know how Wenger came up with 120mm? Or are there various versions of the original Ranger?

Purely an opinion.  With no authority at all.  Personally, I would go by the catalog stated length instead of measuring each one.  If you measure, for example, two Spartans.  One has a keyring nub.  Other has none (they did sometimes come that way).  Two different lengths, but still just the basic 91mm knives.  Or a Bijou compared to a Classic.  Same knife but one has a keyring.
I think of something like the agricultural folders by Wenger and Victorinox as SAKs.  Also something like the Evoke.  All are in the Swiss Army Knife catalogs.  I don't consider something like kitchen knives as SAKs.  I am not so sure how I feel about the Vic bushcraft fixed blades, whatever they were called.  Venture, or something.  I don't consider the Muela made Vics as SAKs.
120 was the stated length of the old Ranger.  Shape was different from the newer ones, but the length was almost the same.  I think I would take the 120 advertised models as separate from the 130 Rangers.
     Just thoughts.  Best wishes.  G
