Black-Out EDC Challenge - January 2026
on: October 28, 2025, 06:27:33 AM

Black. The color of mystery, awesomeness, elegance. Ninjas. Knights. Panthers. This January, it's lights out. Let the darkness consume your edc. :ninja:
Carry at least one black item every day, and post a picture for every day of January.

Who wants to paint it black?

I tried and failed to embed the obvious. The link will have to do.

Despite a comparative lack of carry items in the appropriate hue, I may be in.

I may go in for this too, due to an employment-related event I will likely have time on my hands in January.

I don’t have a ton of black items that I would carry, but have enough to vary it up a little rather than carrying the same thing for the whole month.

Will santa need a separate list for MTO members asking for obsidian wave alphas and black oxide swisstools this year for this challenge?

Well, I am asking Santa for one little black thing that could feature in this. And since in my house Santa is me, I think my chances of getting it are decent!

Looks like a good excuse to finally give my modern Black Oxide Surge (warranty replacement for the "old" model with Core pliers that had bad scissors that wouldn't tighten) a good workout. I personally preferred the finer Core pliers and the micro bit driver, but still it's a nice tool.

Sure why not, I have a couple that fit the criteria.

Does it have to be all blacked out, or can it be grey handle and a black blade?  If so, that would increase my options.

It doesn't have to be all black. It can have black scales/handle/blade. :salute:

This starts in another day! I hope everyone is ready, and welcome to the new members who joined! :salute:

I think these two are going to be my two main carries for the month. I've awlways liked the idea behind these swing out plier type tools, but the execution can be tricky. I think my favorite is the Wenger/Delemont style ones, but I don't have any of those in mostly black, or shelling out the small fortune one would be on ebay.

I think the Skeletool has a generally better reputation, but I've enjoyed the Switch Plier in the limited carrying I've done.

Day 1 Black-Out EDC Challenge

Yep, you know it! After a month without my EDC Swisschamp, it had to get the slot for Day 1 of this Challenge!
Phew, it's good to be carrying it again.

I don't know what my G-Shock was doing there. The time was indeed 0:00 but it wasn't showing the seconds nor the date, and it looks like it says "AC" where it should show the day, TH. I didn't press any buttons or anything, and I looked at it after I saw what it was doing in the pic and it's showing what it should now. Maybe I caught it while it was receiving the WWV time signal.
ETA: That's exactly what it was doing. AC stands for "Automatic Calibration."

Happy New Year, friends!

Day 1

I think this will be a repeat carry throughout the challenge, I don't have a lot of black tools to chose from and these three allow me to go into stealthy-mode without giving off a total LARP-operator vibe while keeping it pocketable and functional.

Not being a big fan of blacked out knives, my Banter is in BNIB condition despite having owned it for years. Though it has seen some minor desk duty cutting tape and opening packages, I think this will be my first time I actually carry it.

Not big on blacked out watches either. This is my first analogue watch with a blacked out case, timely received in early December, though I did not have this challenge in mind at the time :)
