Poncho & ThePeacent

.....sounds like a cheesy western

Nobody better to ask......

I settled on the CS American Lawman as that last ultimate knife purchase. As mentioned elsewhere, I've done something to a CS knife and now there is no going back to a stud, only holes for me from now on....

So, full circle back to the Pacific Salt

I have 2.5 problems/questions:

That bloody riveted pivot, I struggle to make peace with that, and I'm looking for reassurance that's not a problem.......?

What also worries me is the prospect of buying the knife, and a few months later the Pac Salt II with LC200N hits..........I'd walk to Golden and smurf on their porch......

The 0.5 is not PE vs SE, because I'm definitely getting PE.......flip-flopping badly between black or yellow handle.....

Your right is does sound like a bad Western

I haven't had any issues at all with mine so far and it is holding up very well :salute: Peacent has several different models of this blade and has put his through much more use so he will be better to answer this question more in depth :salute:

Yellow :pok: :D I really do like bright colors though ;) :D

many points to address...

- depending on your intended use you'll see that PE does really lack edge retention. The PE H1 ad you know is very soft, very easy to sharpen and will lose its edge very quickly. If you're OK with 8Cr13MoV, 40HC or AUS8 it's on par with them, but if you're in search of more advanced steels you will be disappointed  :salute:
- the hardening of H1 and its properties in SE make me always recommend getting a serrated H1 blade, or on an alternative blade material if you want to go for PE, unless use of the edge is minimal and you want ease of sharpening. In this case, for a rust proof PE folder I'd definitely wait for the newer LC200N knives from Spyderco  :tu:
- Yellow is cool and a differetiative trait of the Salts, I really like it and you cana always turn it darker (unlike black handles) but if you want to go under the radar or just like black knives, the Black variations are as good as the yellow.

If you're  more into woods hiking, sea, river, kayak, or adventure activities the yellow one is an obviously more adequate choice
- a closer size to the AL would be the Salt 1 and not the Pacific, but if the AL's blade is small to you then it's an appropriate upgrade and increase

- the backlock is no TriAd but perfectly functional and secure. It can develop blade play (or even come with play from the factory) as 4 of my Pacifics have it, some more some less, but they all open easily (with enough detent not to open in the pocket or IWB) and you can't disassemble them to tweak the action and spring. The back-lock FRN knives are not uncommonly affected by vertical play from factory, at all   :P

- They're pinned, yes, but after 4 1/2 years with them I've never felt the need to open them up or unscrew the scales, whenever they've been full of water, salt, dirt, soil or sand I just rinsed them in the water or even put them through the dishwasher
I've pried, bnt and dropped the folders numerous times but the FRN keeps going strong and no problems with any of the pins at all other than scratches and dirt

PS: I loved your Finn Wolf mod and I am a fan of Spydieholes myself, I'd put them on my Cold Steels if that was a real option  :salute: :like:

Hi

I have the Salt 1....H1 is a funny steel

I'm thinking I could do a mild re-grind, and I figure I could work-harden it on the polisher, the way I understand it the act of grinding in the serrations does the hardening.

My friend the Spyderco rep says there's no mention of the Salt series being upgraded to LC200n.  I'm not necessarily looking for LC200n, for me it's more about the lightness, simplicity and maintenance free nature of the Salt series.
I remember there are some knives getting lc200n this year, but none I was interested in....love the Spydie Chef but it breaks a few of my rules, nevermind  the price.....
Do you know anything specific?

Have to say I'm not very chuffed to hear about the blade play, but I do understand how tough these knives are.

I'm hoping my general circumstances will change in the not too distant future, if&when that happens any fancy knives (like the backlock Manix or HAP40 Caly 3.0) will simply be useless, I need a light workhorse.

My Salt 1 is black.......enough votes and I was leaning towards yellow.

My fear is, after a few beers, if there was play I'd give that pivot rivet some loving attention with a hammer.....

Sometimes all this progress is not a good thing, I would argue the ability to sharpen is more valuable than a super steel.....I'm 75% converted to the Dark Side.....

Lightly sharpened masonry drill goes through AUS8 like a dream.......wouldn't try it on the better steels.  AUS8A eats HSS and spits out chunks.....

Sorry if I missed it somewhere but why would you get a fixed pivot Pacific Salt?
The newer ones have adjustment and rounder edge clips.
My PacSalt is in my top 5 knives overall and get a lot of use.
It would be my second in one of those “you can only have two” scenarios.

first of all, there have been many regrind jobs on H1, it's no real bugger to work with (I've sone it with sandpaper aand patiencd) but a fuull regrind might be rough on the tools.
The net is full of H1 grinding examples and mods

https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/salt-1-tom-krein-regrind.667166/
http://www.cliffstamp.com/knives/forum/read.php?6,61779,70439,page=3
http://www.spyderco.com/forumII/viewtopic.php?t=63261&start=40

now, LC200N looks really promising and a worthy substitute for H1 in many aspects except costs and price, toughness and corrosion resistance (it can rust unlike H1, it takes a lot but it can be achieved)
the most attractive models for 2018 seem to be the Native Salt and the Waterway (a fixed blade designed by Surfingringo from Spyderco Forums and BF), and the Caribbean that has been delayed for months,  :ahhh

https://www.google.es/search?biw=1280&bih=735&tbm=isch&sa=1&ei=STChWo-WO8W8ggf4zbqgBQ&q=native+salt&oq=native+salt&gs_l=psy-ab.3..0l10.275564.277785.0.277940.13.10.1.0.0.0.252.1206.0j3j3.6.0....0...1c.1.64.psy-ab..6.7.1216...0i67k1.0.HmOurdWmIhc#imgrc=dodldoBxx5JVEM:

the only previous LC00N knife was the Tusk, but was a rather specific model and not a huge success in sales  :P
As shark_za says, the new models have pivots and screws to adjust tension and adapt to your need/likes, the only other big change to the Pacific is the fact that  it now has a n Endura 3 handle, but Sal says they're being updated to an E4 handle (which I don't like better) and many folks are stocking up on old Pacifics to have the previous handle shape   :gimme:

The new Salts will all be in LC200N and H1 depending on model and country of manufacture, per Sal's words   :tu:

My toys:

MTs: Surge (2x), Skeletool CX, Rebar, Blast, Fuse, Micra, Squirt (3x), Wave, Crunch, Mini, Spirit (2x), Pro Scout, MP700 (2x), Diesel, Powerlock, PowerPlier (2x), PocketPowerPlier, Blacktip , ST6 (2x), 5WR, A100

SAKs: Bantam, Executive, Ambassador, Minichamp, Classic Alox, Champion, Farmer, Explorer, Swisschamp, Golf Tool, Wenger Champ, EVO 52, Pocket Tool Chest
