I've had trouble bonding with my Wave since getting it in a trade a few months back. Comparing it to my Spirit which has seen extensive use at work and home it just sned to be lacking.
Last night I had a mini revelation and have decided to view it as an excellent pair of pliers with two great blades, top notch file and decent saw, all really accessible, and a few ok'ish inside tools that can be pressed into service if needs be.

That makes me feel a lot better about owning it.

Good on you for giving it a chance, mags  The blades and diamond file are a big draw for me and I like the bit driver as well ;) I use the saw a lot less these days than I use to but still nice to have  Scissors are nice but I always have a SAK with scissors and my Charge knife but still nice to have backups of tools  :D

Sended few weeks ago my OG Wave to warranty and asked them to repair it not replace it and got it back today. They repaired allmost all tools except longest flathead.
They also changed pliers head to new ones, Both blades, smallest and largest flatheads.

Now i need to find somewhere that long flathead to replace broken one

Hey all, new Leatherman Wave owner here and so far loving the utility of it, especially for fishing and camping. Quick question, when I bought mine I also bought one for my father for Father’s Day. I bought him the regular Stainless steel version and i bought the limited edition black and stainless steel version for myself.

I notice that his operates a lot smoother than mine and his pliers basically fall shut just with gravity whereas mine require you to actually squeeze them together and will stop and stay at any position if you stop applying force to close them.

When I first got it black oxide just kept coming off onto everything so I cleaned it really good with WD40 and oiled up all the pivot areas. The pliers have improved a little bit but are still nothing like the Pliers on my dad’s pair. Did I get a bad pair that are just stiff or are the oxide coated ones generally stiffer for longer due to the extra coating?

Thanks in advance for any answers.

Hello and welcome to the forum      Pliers can vary a bit in how stiff they are when new.  Hopefully they will loosen up a bit with use  :tu:

Welcome!

I'm a bit obsessive about certain things, as other forum members can attest to.  I've been on an intermittent quest to determine if black oxide is good safe. While the question remains unresolved I have learned a few things.

Depending on what method is used to create the coating, you may have quite a bit of black residue when you start using the tool. My understanding is that there is some sort of water soluble/mixable oil on the surface of black oxide. A regular oil soluble oil like WD-40 may be too agressive in removing the factory finish and shorten the lifespan of the coating. WD-40 should be thought to displace water - you can put a thin layer on the tools and wipe off as much as possible, and put a more generous amount in hinges where you want to make sure you pull out any water and then wipe it off.

On black oxide I usually use a dry lint free cloth and put a drop of oil in hinges, but I don't wipe the tool down with anything.

Thanks for the welcome! We’ll see how well they break in. The black has stopped rubbing off onto everything.
