That's an interesting choice of tool loadout for a SAK.

Here is something a bit different.  Just a two layer SAK but the customer wanted a keyring on there too.  Normally that is in the blade layer, but since there is no blade layer I had to figure something else out.

I ended up milling some off the end of the pliers spring and then riveting the keyring piece on that.  I used 2 rivets and I think its on there solid enough.

Great work as always Syph in the "Adventures into Ti" thread - Amazing and ingenious approach to your build challenges once again.
Was the new KR originally from a liner or spring?

I like the way you cut (milled) out a wee hole for the pliers pivot.
However if you had put the tools the other way round maybe that would not have been necessary?
Or even reversed the pliers - But I guess the spring would not work then?

One general comment for everyone...

I love all these variations and mods - And obvioulsy the scales are something very special, different and new.
But it still amazes me that folk want such variations in the toolsets
I just think there are so many options with the catalogue models - Why not just go with one of those  ???
I know you do Syph!! As does Def and many others here?

And often with these variations - I think folk are missing out on tools
Eg this one - No blade or operners - I cannot imagine a SAK without those  ???
Or the Rogueneer - No saw? - Why not take that too?? :o

I guess I like to be different
I don't use a wood saw, and prefer it to be on my MT if I do have one.

I suppose I could have hand cut a custom liner with the keyring build into that, but that felt like more work then this method... maybe it would have been similar though.

Ya Ive been doing the cutout on the scale adjacent to the plier to avoid having to have a liner there and since the scale is Ti, its plenty strong with some milled out.  I had to do it this way as if I swapped the layers the scissors nail nick is blocked.

It is interesting to see how many different model configurations people come up with.  There has definitely been an increase in the bladeless ones requested lately.

Syph, you're really turning out some great mods lately (well, you always are)!

I hope you don't mind me asking a couple questions in your thread as I'm stuck on a decision for my hopeful custom order.  Any word on Ti liners?  Do the Ti liners make it much stronger?  Do the Ti liners make the tools harder to open?  You mentioned you had the nickel silver liners.  Is one option better than the other or just trade offs of pros and cons?  I keep debating back and forth but I don't know the answers so I'm caught in my own logic loop!  :ahhh

And if you're turning out Swiss Army Knives without knives, are they Swiss Army Tools (SATs) or something else?

It's been awhile since I had to figure out how to fit a tool in a new spot, but a challenge came up to fit a bottle opener and mag glass together on a 91.

Normally I say its not possible, not because its really not possible, but because its a huge pain to do since all the backsprings on 91s are highly specific to the tool they use.

Well I got it to work, but the standard 91mm bottle opener didnt have enough metal for me to reshape so I just used one from a 93mm which is thicker anyhow.

I had to relocate the pivot hole and make a weird stepped grind on the back side, but the darn thing actually works and even in the half stop position! :D

It is nice, but expensive, heavy and non practical (scissors inside a SAK and pliers with no cutting power)

Better, cheaper, lighter, and smaller these two combined.

I know I know!  I was going to hand cut one from brass as a test, but its so annoying to hand cut a circle its never perfect.  I think I will just gamble some money on a small waterjet run of them in brass.

Well, you know that I'll take a couple, also my Balloonist needs to become reality, and people will jump on the brass mag, once it's a thing.

Should you have a run of brass mag glass holders, please put me down for 2. Along with the scissors, the mag glass is my second most used tool in my SAKs (>50 y/o eyes demand these!)

Ok, I will order a piece of brass to get cut for the mag glass holder.

Its $100 for a square foot of 0.125" 464 (naval brass, it's harder than cartridge brass and would be better for this purpose) so Ive been reluctant, but im sure there are others who would like to upgrade from the plastic as well.

I think that quite a few of Syph's customs end up with people around here or at least with a great interest in knives and tools and will end up with people carrying dedicated folders or even fixed blade knives making a SAK blade redundant. As for the "why not this tool too" that's more of a less is more kind of deal I guess. I know I work along those lines when it comes to SAKs. Only the most useful of tools on the SAK (+corkscrew for how much it's worth it once you really need it). Drivers, scissors and pliers goes on a larger tool that won't get pocket carry.
