Is the frame slightly oval and when you drop the lens in you turn it so that it tightens to a friction fit ?

Still warm, but that would only work if the lens was oval too and its round.

Its a snug fit to start with just 0.001" extra on the diameter, and then the magic is... I squeeze it in a padded vice to pinch it tight.  I wasn't sure if that would hold it in, but it did and it doesn't move or come out with max force of my fingers.  To release it I would just squeeze in a perpendicular direction.

I spent days testing way more complex solutions that all sucked.  Then I think... squeeze it.  And dammit it worked just fine.  The set screw idea of version 1 was so fiddly to do I hated it.   So now I can make this in 3 machining operations and have it work repeatably.

I love simple solutions

So I was close as in you effectively make the frame microscopically oval by squeezing it a bit.

Yup!  Its worth taking longer to come up with a simple solution, then quickly figure out a complicated one...

I wonder how hard you can squeeze it before you break the lens?

I wondered that as I was watching the glass, then I put on safety goggles... then nothing bad happened.

Here are the other things I tried

1.  Machine press fit ring to hold it it.  Fail as it wastes more brass sheet, more machine time and didnt look good.
2.  Crazy glue - Really sucked as I could never keep it from being visible at the edges.
3.  Clear silicone - Same problem as glue
4.  Machine tabs to hold it in - Worked but had the effect of making the glass look non round so esthetic fail and also more machine time.
5.  Machine oversize ring to then screw over top.  Way more machine time and then I need screws and drilling and tapping.. yuck
6.  Machine 2 thinner versions each with a lip then sandwich them.  Double machine time, more material used, and a seam down the center....

Looks great!

I'm going to do something similar but machine the lens bore in softjaws, with of course slight tension on the vise. After the bore and slot are machined, release the jaws and it should spring to a slight oval shape. Well see..

Since the glass didn't break in a vise it still may be magic  :D

Awesome way to get the glass in Syph

Nice little Piece of Smurf - Syph  >:D  :D

I agree that the image is a little complex for the size - the diagram on the screen did not look too good - However on the blade it looks pretty good!!

Here are the other things I tried:
1.  Machine press fit ring to hold it it.  Fail as it wastes more brass sheet, more machine time and didnt look good.
2.  Crazy glue - Really sucked as I could never keep it from being visible at the edges.
3.  Clear silicone - Same problem as glue

Gosh - How many hours work and wasted parts is all that ?? Especially if you include version 1 with the screw!!
I know exactly what you mean about looking for the complex solution when there is a really simple one - I am doing this all the time - at home and work!!
As always - I'm in total admiration of your perseverence, ingenuity and complete commitment to doing a top quality job! You will stop short of nothing less than excellence!

PS. Noticed the bite on you finger right at the beginning of the vid  :o

It looks really good in person.  Was mostly a test of the engraver I was after anyhow.  :D

Ive got quite a few wounds at the moment.  Opened up my middle finger today with a nice sharp SAK blade and introduced my thumb to a slitting saw a few days ago.  When I finally get done the R&D phase for 91mm my fingers can rest up.  :D  I was going to move to 93 next but the 84mm demand is still pretty high so I might as well tackel that next and have some CNC fixtures for doing that backspring hack to fit scissors on there.  A skeletonized 84mm Ti handle would be super light.
