Is that a Vic Phillips in there or did Wenger make one, too?
And, as I seem to have missed the first 2 incarnations - Are there any pictures of the process?!

Wenger makes a Phillips, too. It's a standard Wenger layer, Phillips and wrench ;)

I added a few more pics. :D

I need to source some new scales for it though as these were taken off and put back on one too many times. The attachment point at the phillips isn't holding too good anymore. But I like those scales as they came from my first ever SAK so I might just add a drop of rubber cement there and keep them. ;)

A very small amount of Epoxy in the scale blind holes will keep the scale on perfectly.
I clamp mine till the epoxy sets.

I started this mod back in December 2011. :ahhh

Here's the 1 version, with saw and Vic combo tool. LINK TO POST in this thread from back then with more pictures.

I decided later on I didn't need the saw that much in an urban environment so I dropped that and the Vic combo tool, while perfectly functional didn't have that perfect snap so I replaced it with a nail file.

Not sure if I ever posted a detailed thread/post of that change and when it happened.

I later decided I needed a combo tool for the locking screwdriver and opener which led to this.

Here's a thread from the beginning of the mod and I'll add a few other pictures there soon. :salute: There's a list of most models with the phillips I posted for another member some time ago.

Which tool has that combo tool?

That is one of my favorite mods for sure.

I think Rick is talking about the Wenger combo tool.

Which tool has that combo tool?

That is one of my favorite mods for sure.

If you want a corkscrew, Entree

If you want a phillips, Junior 10 (blunt tipped blade though, but you can source another one)

If you don't want any backtools, Picnic.

You asked me before, when I bought it and started talking about this mod, if a combo tool from a Picnic would be a simple drop in. Nope. :-\The combo tool/knife layer uses a different kind of backspring to the nail file/knife as it has to make room for the wider tool.

Here's a Picnic backspring, my modified one and a standard nail fine one. I grinded to middle one to be able to use the lock but the combo tool would stick out a few millimeters too far out when closed. So I reused another backspring from my stash.

So for easier modding, get the one with the tool set you want and just transfer the whole layer. Knife blades are the same and you can swap the butter blade for proper one.

I think he meant the wenger combo.  SAK selector says

Evo 63
Junior 02

Yes, I can tell the same. I tried to modify a normal spring to put the combo tool and had the same problem. It's better to look for a model with the combo tool and use that spring. I was trying to make a model that doesn't exist (I think), with locking blade and combo tool, but I couldn't make it work properly. In my experience, it's easier to modify a picnic model spring to use with locking blade that to put a combo tool on a common spring for file or small blade.

Talking about Wengers mods... My last hiking sak. Locking blade, saw, awl instead the corckscrew, no can and bottle opener layer. Exposed rivets. The most difficult part was to find 0.4 mm aluminium sheat to make the spacer that makes de awl fits in that layer.

You can see the spacer here.

I actually have to rebuild it. You can see in the last picture that the spacer is not perfect, I made a mistake and I broke it hammering the little rivet that holds it. But these pictures are a good sample of how the finished product it's going to look like.

I'm really liking this mod, as I had something similar planned. Sans the locking blade though. Why did you decide on the exposed rivets? For the looks? :D

I've been thinking of maybe making a Wenger Solo too.

I just like the appearance, it looks a bit retro. It's inspired on the Proffesional series of Wenger.

Pros and cons: it makes the knife stronger in the way the scales can't fall off or get loose and the toothpick and tweezers are well stored. On the other hand, if the scales break, the rivets and tools could get loose.

I already showed my 84mm Ebony Golfer with hook and plus scales. So that's not really new...

Now I reassembled it. I managed to grap a 84mm climber with long nail file, corroded liners and in an overall poor condition. However, the nail file, scissor and spring were good enough.

That's the result:

Note the hand made pin for the nail file

and the hand made cutout

Thx @all. I like exposed rivets too. Using them, custom plus scales are easier to make and the knife still can be taken apart. That was a great benefit working on this mod.

However, 84 mm long nail file is a pain in the a-s-s ... the fourth pin is split inside and building up the long nail file-layer is fricking... ;-)

Last mod, the "Wenger Mender", something I never understood why was not in Wenger's catalog.

Quick description: a Toolchest Plus without fishscaler, compass and magnifier. My idea of a nice Wenger Champ.

Tools.

Comparison with Swisschamp.

Excuse the bad pictures! I just finisehd it now.

Looks like a really useful package and well done, thought I would have probably reversed the layers a bit. :P

Phillips/wrench in the middle, then pliers, scissors, blade.

It looks to me as if the scissors nail nick could be hidden by the phillips here making them harder to open.

I just respected the factory configuration and added the two saws at the end. Scissors are more or less fine, much better than some factory models with it beside locking blade, that's really annoying sometimes, with the nail nick covered by the unlocking leverage.

I was thinking in changing the order, specially to put the wrench closest as possible to one side, not in the middle; but at the end I decided to not change it, because that makes confortable to tight screws, but not to loosen it, or viceversa.

We are insane. :D :D :climber:

I see a lot of merit in having the Philips/Wrench offset from the center of the knife as much as possible. That way the wrench can get on to more nuts that are close to a flat surface.
Makes the Phillips less wieldy though, I admit.
I actually saw a Wenger today with almost that exact same tool load as your mod. I was tempted, but then I already have too many Vics and Wengers (don't we all?) ;)

Yes!, that was my thought. I have a Wenger Biker  (nice SAK!) in my MTB and that's my experience: not confortable on flat surfaces. But I thought that, because you have to reverse the tool depending on tightening or loosing, I should adopted a compromise leaving it in the middle (I supose that's the idea of Wenger). If I leave it close to one side, it's going to be very good for tightening, but bad for the opposite task. You can work with the wrench a bit crossed anyway, so I think it's a position where is going to work for all scenarios. Not perfect, but kind of universal.

This is my reflection, but maybe I'm just overthinking it. Ah... I remember the old days, when I simply used the SAKs...

Did this one last night...

Replaced the red plastic scales on this old Victorinox Classic with some hardwood from an incense burner.
Need to fit a new spring to the scissors and add a keyring, just a simple leather lace lanyard for now.
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.
