Have been enjoying this special Skeletool today. I think it is the first version of CX released, probably from 2008. It has no date code. Can anyone confirm?

The reason it's special is sentimental--I found it online after a long search, and it looks like an exact replacement of a very kind gift my brother gave me many years ago. The original was lost in a disaster.

Here are some of the ways this model differs from newer versions:

- Unusually deep serrations
- Thinner plier head, with an odd large circle in the pattern. The plier pivots have bronze washers on both sides, which are absent on newer thicker pliers
- Old style pivots with multiple parts (separate screws and beveled washers)
- Different font, and says "TM" instead of "(R)"
- Says "PAT PEND" on spines where the springs are
- Pocket clip is narrower, and the little round silver piece supporting the clip is shaped differently and not attached. Easy to drop and lose!

Congratulations on the first gen Cx :woohoo:

Thanks Poncho! Do you have specific knowledge that my model is indeed the first one released?

I ended up with another one which might also be the first release! This silver regular Skeletool has all the features of the CX (except serrations). Plain blade! It came new in box, marked copyright 2007.

I find it odd that they reversed the feature of plain/serrated blades on the regular/premium models later. Or rather, I find it odd how the early versions are, because the current way seems more appropriate.

(Like many, I’m not a fan of combo blades. Except in the “sentimental” case!)

In case I wasn’t clear, I meant the silver one has all the differences that I mentioned from current models (except serrations).

They only made the Cx with serrated blade  in the first year

Same with the first year regular Skeletool,  in that, it is the only year that they made those with plain edge blade :salute:

After the first year of production Leatherman swapped which blade each had

Thanks for the facts! And the compliments. Yeah, I'm very happy with these 2 tools. They're both in mint condition, and were cheaper than the price of new ones!

I admit to being a bit of a hardware fetishist (a common tendency around here, I think). I have taken apart some other skeletools, and once I realized that the "new" skeletool pivot bolts were a kind of contrived design made to mimic the look of the original ones, I developed a strong preference for the old style (even though they are more finicky to work with). They are machined and nice looking, and the appearance has functional integrity, whereas the appearance of the new style is basically fake.

:iagree:  I do prefer the older Skeletools even if I have a bit newer Cx (I prefer plain edge blades as well :D  ) they figured out a way to make it look similar but more than likely cheaper :ahhh

Yeah must be cheaper, and definitely quicker & easier to assemble. As far as "look similar"... having realized what's going on with these, I find them about as convincing as paper mache boulders on some planet in the original Star Trek. Ha!

Here's a nice early CX with both a plain blade and the older more satisfying pivots.

Finally found a CX with CF insert (wouldn't want to lower myself on non CF variant  :multi: )
Still waiting for it to come by me  :mail:

Sadly it happens to be the newer one with "fakeed" pivot screw heads
Meet me also on youtube & instagram for mostly knives (and multitools) content

The fake heads offend me!
Maybe you can keep an eye out for a cheap broken model that has the original hardware & swap the pivots.

Excellent pics awl  :salute:

This talk of fake heads is mostly lost upon me

I used mine to open a cider after England finally managed a win a 6 Nations match (Mrs Surge was not happy )

It has the P.E blade but I would prefer a combo  :dunno: ;)

Well the talk of the “fake heads” is a purely fetishistic issue with no functional importance. If you don’t care about it, you will be happy and undisturbed.

You do however have the nice older “authentic” ones on the tool pictured. :)

I have never been described as "undisturbed" but often "older" (as for "authentic" ... :dunno: )

Carrying this beauty today.

It’s definitely going to be first choice for my summer circus work.

Hadn't carried my Skeletool in forever, it really needs to go into rotation.
