You should be fine with Maple. Surform/Rasp to shape it initially, and work in a slight diagonal to the grain to begin with to remove the maximum amount of stock without gouging. You'll may find that you have to work in opposite directions from one side of the haft to the other - one direction will be slidey and the other will catch which can be good or bad depending where you're at. Draw knifes and small planes are all good... I'm sure you know all this already!   :tu:

I like the surform idea. Might give that a try.

The grain on this bit of Maple is quite nice overall, but there is one spot that might prove a bit tricky. We'll see!   :salute:

If I mess up this Maple chunk, I'll probably go the pick handle route.

But I shouldn't be negative to start out......right? I can do this with a Jack knife, a rasp, and a draw knife, ja?

@comis: I like the way you think. Lyndax deserves a bit of bling.....

Positive attitude, that's the way!

If you smurf up, just put a gold chain through the eye and wear Lyndax as bling  8)

Here is a handle from an old  mattock I was going to clean up, but I have a newer user, so maybe this handle can be a donor?
I marked a 450mm line and looks about right for the hang. This could give me a 700mm handle if I used all of it

It feels well too heavy, but there will be at least half the weight gone by lopping some off and thinning it down. I'll probably weigh it before...

Heard there's a bit of a heatwave in the UK, hope it's not affecting you too much, Fuzzy?

I have no doubt that it will shed weight and slim down as it gets in shape. Just wish I could say the same.......

The 600mm sledge handle I have feels pretty good, I'd say this will be similar when done.

Just remember, Muscle weighs more than Fat, so getting in shape doesn't necessarily mean dropping in weight so much. If I had Abs instead of Flabs, I'd probably still be a similar weight. Well, that's what I'm telling myself, anyway!

Well... we had a wee bit of heat and sun on the Saturday there... then it started rumbling about 4pm-ish... then we had a massive thunderstorm and deluge... then all the run-off from the midden fields washed away half the road.

Mock up with 600mm sledge handle. Started taking a bit off the sides of the mattock handle with a No.4 plane. Need to get down to the rear eye profile so plenty more to go. Handle started out at roughly 1050g

TR, I think these get hung like a tomahawk. Axe head will slide up the handle to get seated at the top.

My Rinaldi axe's eye is tapered a bit: skinnier down low, wider at the top. Says 'tomahawk' to me.

Yep, the outline on the end of the mattock handle is the smaller bottom/back of the eye, not the larger top/front. Will use the extra meat from the mattock head swell to keep the head on  :tu:

Don't take any notice other sledge handle as a final, just plonked it on to get an idea of what it'd look like with an extra 6" on the end. It doesn't have enough wood in the long top to bottom direction of the handle to work though there's enough side to side
