Day 6 - Traveling and visiting family today. Just returned home and to this point no action for my knife yet!

Buck Stockman and Sheepfoot blade rest on top of bike rack mounted to my Sierra.

Day 06:

No uses so far today...was busy with draw knife and spoke shave...but the more I carry this Soddie, the more I like it.  :tu:

(Image removed from quote.)

Good pic of your "Sodbuster".      :like:

Two things this challenge is doing for me...

#1) Allowing me to see a lot of really interesting and gorgeous knives.

#2) Giving me a greater appreciation for the folks that now (many of you...) and once did carry only a traditional folder as their only tool.

Each day it is truly a struggle for me to not grab my Wave, my Hercules, my GAK or even my Pioneer X!!!

The first several days of the challenge I carried only my little no-name stockman, or mini stockman or whatever it is. It got the job done, more or less. However, I did not feel adequately prepared when carrying only that knife in my pocket. It’s limited and small.
(Image removed from quote.)
The only real thing it had going for me was that it was old and not expensive, so I wasn’t really worried about losing or damaging it.

Since Thursday, I’ve been carrying my JE Made slip joint. It’s great if I need to CUT something, but that is just about all it’s capable of.

It’s also a pricey knife (for me!!)($175) and due to the maker being so far away, in China, getting it repaired would be a nightmare. So, yes, I do worry about it.
(Image removed from quote.)

Today, for instance, using it to dig my wife’s credit card out of the ticket machine had me a nervous wreck. What if I gouge it??  What if I break the tip??

Now, I didn’t (and wouldn’t) hesitate to use it. I knew it’s shortcomings when I chose to buy it. I didn’t buy it for a shelf Queen. I bought it to use.

But a big part of me would rather have something else in my pocket. On this trip, the OG Wave is in the glovebox of the Highlander and my Hercules (and Pioneer X) is in the suitcase with my clothes.

Just in case. However, when I grab something to cut with or leave the hotel, the traditional knife is what gets dropped in my pocket. As per the challenge.

This one IS going to be a challenge for me!!

~

I carried one pocket knife for 44 years, then oldest son gave me a WAVE in 2004. I fondled it but never really carried it.  I always had dedicated tools with me as a service technician repairing computer mainframes down to mini computers including PCs and Network appliances.

Then moved to construction type work in 2011, found a half price ST300 and began using. Then found this site, and never understood HOW managed all those years with only a blade (broken tip and AWL)

But, then my FATHER had ONLY one pocket knife. A Muskrat style. Two identical blades. Always a sharp blade available.  One knife, same knife, for ALL tasks.

Yes it is possible, just that reading the internet makes us wanting MORE.

Yeah...I used the Spirits wood saw to cut the tendon for opening the left thumb. Worked like a charm.
Operation will be tomorrow morning

I hope I can keep the challenge updated daily :tu:

This one IS going to be a challenge for me!!

:like:  You bring up a bunch of great points in your post. I've had similar thoughts when carrying an expensive (for me) knife. In the end though, they are tools and meant to be used. If I mangle a pricey, I'll either find a way to replace it, or find a less costly replacement. Regardless, life is too short not to enjoy the tools and toys you have.  :tu:

I had a custom slip joint that was very nice. I looked to dig it out for this challenge, but can't find it. I'm not sure if I lost it somewhere or squirreled it away for safe keeping. A shame really, but it was a knife worthy of being used and enjoyed. Now....it's just a missing shelfie....

It’s limited and small.

...

This one IS going to be a challenge for me!!

I completely agree, but you are doing better than me.

I started out with my RR Muskrat, which is awesome for cutting most things, but that is it.  I switched to my Girl Scout knife which has the bottle opener (slot driver tip) and can opener.  It is better but still not fully capable compared to what I’m used to.

What I have taken to doing is at least trying to do what I need to with the traditional knife while carrying other tools that meet the functions I most frequently used on my SAK.  Needless to say that it is definitely not as convenient as having just one tool.

As far as the use of expensive tools.  I’m of the same thinking as Nix - their tools and meant to be used.  If I lose or ruin them, I will kick myself, but I would kick myself more if I spent the money to have a really nice tool that I never used out of fear of damaging it.

Although, I will confess the SAK Pioneer X did get used for my paracord work today, because that is what is kept with all my other paracord tools so it was grab without thinking.

Day 6: Just getting started for the day.  Just the Sheepdogs and me! Cutting open a coffee packet is all we've done so far.

Coffee and a Sodbuster. Good way to start the day!    :like:

Saturday, it's been a slow day, went to watch Spyderman Far from Home which was pretty good, and started organizing all the spacers I got for knife/SAK modding.  Posing here is the GEC #97 in yellow rose.  Call me traditional, I think the knife may look better in stag/bone covers.  One of my favorite carry/tool at home is the back scratcher in the middle from Cabela.

(Image removed from quote.)

Sweet 97!    :tu:     :like:

Great posts and photos :tu:
It pains me to say that my Grohman looks quite plain in comparison, l also would have liked more difference between the blades

Nothing wrong with that knife. Looks like it could handle most any job!     :tu:     :like:

Day 6 photo
A little hiding in the pocket today

Really like the bone on that 54 frame Trapper!    :like:

Fuzzy, what's the title of that book? I wouldn't mind finding a copy.

Day 6
Had a chance to do some puttering in the garden today. The hook blade works well on cutting green twigs.

That Hawkbill blade will be handy in the garden!     :like:

Great blades and photos today, gentlemen! :like:

Day 6:
Changed it up to one I used to carry(when dressed nicely) when I lived in NY. That is why the bolsters are not polished. :ahhh
