Day 22

"Doh!  It's only Monday!"

These are few interesting CRKT I have collected, M16 at the bottom has a switch to secure it's liner lock, so it won't deactivate while your blade is out.  The Endorser in middle is an assisted knife, and has a thumbstud 'switch' to release the blade from the detent, and they call this mechanism 'outburst' assist.  Top knife the Cuatro, I simply like it's simplicity and very light weight design.

DAY 21

Today’s knife is the Gerber Pocket Square. I really like the design of this and would love one in a better grade steel

I think this is a relatively recent offer, and remember seeing this from youtube bladeshow previews.  It's a pretty cool design and if you like this, maybe take a look at the CRKT Cuatro I posted too. :pok: :D

‘73 Puma White Hunter.
This reminded so much of what Sos24 posted earlier, I think it was a knife inherited from her grandfather.  Small world! :like:

DAY 21
TOPS/Buck CSAR-T Folder.  Rescue tool version with a belt cutter, glass breaker, and the other side of the handle has a hex bit holder built in.  This is one beefy folder and it's got some weight to it.  Definitely not one you would want to carry in your pocket.  I hope to get one of the 154CM versions without the rescue tool setup on the end sometime soon.  The newer ones have a Rocky Mountain tread pattern that is cool looking in the G10 scales as well.  I didn't think I would like the modified tanto on these CSAR-T lines, but that rounded portion of the modified tanto is an excellent cutting edge and easier to sharpen (by hand) than I thought it would be.  I need to post my CSAR-T necker that kind of rounds this out before the challenge is over.
That looks so hefty, how much does it weight?  :pok:

Day 21 (Happy Father's Day!):

So I'm going to tell you about today's knife. I'm pretty sure that most of what I say will be accurate, but there may be a few embellishments or details of uncertain veracity. Just sayin'....

This is the wickedly sharp Laconico Nessmuck:

(Image removed from quote.)

So...right away I'm on thin ice. This is definitely a Ray Laconico knife. I got it from him and it has his stamp on it. But I'm not sure if Ray called it a Nessmuk or I did. And I can't remember if this was a knife Ray made for fun or I asked him to make. I'm going to go with this story: I asked Ray to make me his version of a Nessmuk. And this is the knife he made.

Diehard Nessmuk fans will declare that this is not a Nessmuk, but I beg to differ. Call it a leaf-blade if you must, but I think Ray took the concept of the Nessmuk and refined it. To me this looks like a humpbacked version of a chopped down butcher's knife. And like the original Nessmuk, it's a real worker.

Specs: a full-tang blade made from 1/8" 1095 with a full-flat grind and a micro convex edge (Ray may have put a V-grind on the edge, but in my hands it wears a micro-convex edge). The scales are pinned walnut. The OAL is a bit over 9.25" and the blade is approximately 4.5".

I'll confess, it is a bit large for an EDC, and I felt a bit conspicuous wearing this to the grocery store; however, Ray made a great sheath for it and it is a light knife. (That 1/8" steel keeping the knife light and lively.) The wide blade mean this knife 'tracks' well as it cuts. It works well as a butcher knife, it has enough 'belly' to be a good game knife. The thin steel and FFG make this a great slicer. It rocks well on a cutting board, too. The symmetric grip works very nicely with any grip or in any direction. This knife inherently feels versatile.

I don't think I've batonned with this knife. I'm sure it would handle small stuff well, but the thin steel is probably not ideal for batonning wet wood on a cold day. Nevertheless, this knife is meant for real life and regular use. In that role--spreading peanut butter or cutting string for staking tomatoes--it excels. I've taken it camping and it has served well. I can't say this is my favorite fixie, but it is right up there.

Today I made a big pot of Sambar, the South Indian soup of renown. (I make a kick-ass Sambar, if I say so myself, and no Indian Aunties are consulted.) This soup uses a ton of various veggies, and it gave me a chance to put the Laconico through its paces.

Chopping onion, brilliant:

(Image removed from quote.)

Chopping carrots, excellent:

(Image removed from quote.)

The Laconico even diced up an Acorn Squash:

(Image removed from quote.)

In addition, I used it to cut up tomatoes, basil leaves, Bell peppers, green chiles, garlic, and string beans. The Laconico Nessmuk took on all comers and handled each with ease.

I doesn't look like much, but I think Ray channeled his inner Nessmuk when grinding out this one. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.  ;)
I know you have collected a good amount of Nessmuk designs, will this be your candidate for the Nessmuk Challenge this fall?  I still haven't made up my mind!  :D

Some hobbyists may not think much of the CRKT and Kershaw use of steel, but I for one am thankful for their offering.  The less expensive price tags do allow folks to try different patterns without breaking the bank.  Kershaw is particular smart in that strategy, many ZT offerings can find its synonym in Kershaw line, so people could try them out before getting the more premium version.

I think Gerber had "up" their game by introducing many trendy models, this being one of them.  The chopper style knives had been gaining momentum, and I think it would be cool to see a straight razor/slicer version soon in the future.

Powernoodle Day 22

I opened 10 bags of mulch this morning with a Cold Steel Hold Out 1.  It works!  The thin profile of the Hold Out 1 makes it surprisingly easy to carry this 6" blade.  This was a new knife, and notice how quickly the coating wears.

It should look quite nice in no time. I would prefer that kind of wear to the sort I’ve seen with very thick coatings that chip and gouge out and leave a rough looking finish.

Yeah I definitely agree.  The old coating Cold Steel used to employ would wear off almost instantly.  That's what is on my Hold Out.  Cold Steel has moved to a diamond-like coating which is much more durable.

Day 17: Ozark Trail Multi-Force

I missed yesterday, so I'm posting late. My bad!

I used this tool all day yesterday. It's heavy as balls, but it's a great tool and I prefer it to the Wave.  Why? The bit driver for starters. Full-size 1/4" bits is a big deal, there's a much larger selection of double-ended bits than there are Leatherman bits. I also prefer the way the blades open on the opposite pivot, so everything can be tightened and adjusted perfectly. This also leaves out a lot of complicated locks that Leatherman uses to ensure the blades don't open in pliers mode. With the blades on the opposing pivot... they just can't. No extra intricate lock needed. It comes WITH a pocket clip, a case, and an extension for double-sided bits.   Here is my EDC setup. I keep the extension and a rail of WiHa double-sided bits on a rail in a little mini sheath I got somewhere. That goes in my back pocket, and the Ozark gets clipped into my front right pocket.

Here's the bit kit all attached.

Here's the sheath and storage for the bit extension (I don't use this setup, but I do store it this way)

And here's the tool all opened up

Charles.

More on that Ozark Trail. Here's my use for it yesterday!

Disassembling motorcycle:

Filing burs off of holes drilled in aluminum angle iron:

And sawing through an old, extremely dry 1x4. It took 20 seconds to make this cut.

DAY 22
ESEE 5 and Buck 722 Spitfire with small outdoor kit.  One of the two knives I take with me into utility right of ways on the job, just in case.    While walking just past the tree line, I noticed one of the biggest mushrooms we get in this part of Appalachia.  Fly Amanita (I think - there's so many freakin types of mushrooms).  Went back later and it measured 8" across and 10.5" tall.
