It's a Revolution XT, Buck collab with mountaineer Pete Whittaker, a sort of folding fixed blade, really smooth movement on it too  :tu:

Mailman just delivered what may be my favorite Buck knife.......

Heck, this 117 with a 154cm steel blade may just be my favorite knife....

I hope Buck will start carrying the 117 as a standard model, not just a sprint run.   :tu:

Quite right. 4.5" blade vs 4" blade of the Woodsman. The handle....and this is where I've been completely won over...is substantially bigger in every dimension. Super comfortable. The 102 Woodsman is still a gem for me, but this new 117 Brahma is a quick favorite. (And you know I love me some 154cm steel (with Bos heat treatment.).

Big hands need big solutions  :D

I've just started getting my experiences with different steels.
What do you like about 154CM? The possibility of field sharpening while holding an edge better than Buck's 420HC?

What do you like about 154CM?

Bob Loveless....amazing knifemaker...pioneered the use of 154cm. When first using it, I thought it was nice, but nothing special. With time and experience, I've found that 154cm seems to do everything 'well', but not great. It is reasonable tough, somewhat stain resistant, holds an edge well, and is fairly friendly to sharpen (as compared to super-steels). Most of all--maybe because it is easier to sharpen than some--I can put and exceptional edge on 154cm knives.

Something like M390 might be deemed a superior steel in several ways, but I enjoy using & resharpening 154cm more. 154cm steel has a 'lively' feel to me.

I have two Benchmade 940's (The small Osborne folders): one in 154cm and one in S30V. Both are excellent pocket knives and it would be silly to say that one is 'better' than the other, but I tend to enjoy the 154cm knife more. It gets carried more, used more, and sharpened more. If I had to choose....I'd pick the 154cm version. On paper, you'd think the S30V would be the better choice, but in practical use I find I enjoy 154cm more.

And....I still like Buck's 420HC. Good stuff, takes a great edge, easy to sharpen, easy to care for. For my practical needs, Buck's 420HC works well. In theory there are steels that perform better, but for a weekend of camping or fishing....that 420HC is perfect.   :tu:
