Multi-blades that are not SAK's..........
on: July 14, 2020, 07:06:35 PM
Although the Swiss Army Knife or SAK as it is more commonly known here is one of the most popular knives ever manufactured ,there were many other makers that offered a multi-bladed multi-use knife many years prior to their introduction.
Some of these were what came to be known as the,"scout/utility" pattern and were designed as an everyday work knife while others were designed to be used in the maintenance of horses(utilizing hoof picks for removing stones from an animal's hooves and tools for repairing harnesses)and others a so-called,"gent's knives"with fancy pearl handles and tools for trimming one's fingernails and the ends of a cigar. Still others were fitted with tools for serving bottled wine and/or champagne. Some were designed with hunters in mind that sported blades used for general skinning and caping(removing the hide of the animal without punching holes in it)and cutting through bones.
Some even tried to combine a multitude of these tasks in one knife and while impressive looking usually failed miserably.Others tried to show their skills as cutlers and installed as many blades, tools and whatever as possible and these came to be known as,"exhibition knives";the most famous of which was the Joseph Rodgers,"year knife".This knife had the uniqueness of having a blade added to it every year until I believe the year 1922. They even hired a person whose only job was to open each blade(all one thousand nine hundred and twenty-two of them)one at a time;clean and oil the pivot pin,and then close them.If I recall correctly this process took nearly two weeks to do!
Anyway back to the topic at hand. The knives I will be featuring here all have a minimum of five blades and most have many more. Some are modern but most are old;some dating to before 1900. Some are not in the best of shape but considering they survived at all is worthy of displaying them.
As I can only post 4 pictures at a time this will take quite a few posts so please be patient and hold off commenting until the post is complete. Hope you enjoy them.
#1 is a horseman's knife stamped,"A.Burch Celebrated Cutlery" and is likely pre-1900.I have yet to find information on this company.
#2 is stamped,"A.Kastor & Bros."and dates to the early 1900's.
#3 is stamped,"Aitor Spain" and is a modern knife with really nice stag handles.
#4 is stamped,"Amefa KL-63" and is a Dutch military issue knife.

Thanks for the kind words. If you liked the two Mitsoboshi knives then you will probably like this one as well. Don't know why I didn't include it before.
I had thought about including four blade knives as well in this post but it would have made it far too long.
