That'll work!

(I ordered a used copy of the Craigheads' book. 4th edition. Seems like a good book to have and read for a number of reasons!)

My copy is a third edition from 1981.  It should have a fold out map inside the back cover, "World distribution of the principle vegetative regions" at least my third edition has it. They might have just incorporated it elsewhere in the book for the later editions.

Great GAW and fun topic! This is my entry for adventure..

I had a summer of a lot of work and a doughter that stayed with me almost all days I had off work (her mum and I was separated) but suddenly I had two days to my self and I thought I needed something different and going up to Norway and "trolltungan" sounded like a nice thing so I bought a road map of Norway, packed my bag and went for it.

I drowe all day and ended up at a campsite nearby, sleepy in the car and the next morning I headed out. I didn't know if there would be a lot of people on the trail or not so I packed stuff to get by if something where to happen but there was quite a lot more people there than I had thought, met some great folks to talk to and walk together with for the.. I think 11km one way, got up there, took some pictures, had some food and warm chocolate and started to get down again.

Back down again a drowe one of my new friends to his campsite and got back in to my car and drowe all night to get home in time to go shopping and get my doughter the next afternoon.

Trolltungan is an amazing place about 700m above a lake I believe. Quick adventure but fun and  would love to do it again

That's me all the way out

As for wilderness adventure knife a choose between these two but I thing the mora garberg is the appropriate choise. Nice weight, full tang, blade is perfect length, stainless steel and feels like a workhorse. I grown up with moras as most people here in sweden and have had theme when fishing, in the woods but mostly for work. I wasn't going to buy this one but when I handled it in the store I did it anyway.

I haven't had this one with me that many times yet but it will get more time exploring for the rest of our lives.

I often take a oho trekker with me for an extra blade and saw but when having the garberg I think an extra blade it just redundant

Old Lefty - Willderness knife:

I present my adventure knife: Iisakki Järvenpää from ’87. Back then it was traditional for units in military service to order  officer training course knifes. This is mine. I carried it for the rest of my tour on all outdoor exercises and countless times for similar duty ever since. I have others fancier, more tactical, better in bushcraft or survival situations, etc. However, for me this is the knife that started it all. First serious, quality puukko of my own (till then any old Fiskars or Mora was good enough)

Wild Woman addition!

I'm adding Melissa "Backwoods" Miller to the list as an entry.

In case you never heard from her, she gained recognition on Discovery Channel's "Naked and Afraid" where she turned out to be an expert survivor in the most harsh conditions.
Having done multiple tours and having participated in the "All stars" edition of the show, she turned out to be one of the best contestants.

Her expertise in general survival, trap and shelter building, plants and insect identification and hardcore determination are rather impressive.

I can't tell exactly how old she is, but I'm guessing she's only a tad older than me, which impresses me even more.

On top of that, there's uglier people to watch on TV...

She's now part of Blade Magazine, a familiar face on Blade Show and quite active on social media in case you're into that.

I, myself, stopped following her feed.
Not because of her posts, but because of the hordes of horny dudes licking her heels with every chance they get to the point it sickens me.

So pretty. :dd:
I'd have a Garberg if the price was lower here. I know I'll eventually get one. I had been thinking of getting a proper, expensive, brand name, full tang fixed blade, and the Garberg is what I have decided to get.

With due respect to Jim Bowie, Crocodile Dundee, and John Rambo, I've come to the realization that the Farmer X is my favorite woods/wilderness knife, for a number of reasons (in no particular order):
  • It's about as close to bomb-proof as possible for a folding knife.  (I've accidentally dropped a '61 Soldier from about waist height onto concrete before, and other than minor cosmetic scuffing of the scales, it was none the worse for wear.)
  • All-metal construction makes it highly resistant to heat (could be put into boiling water if needed to clean and or sterilize it) and most chemicals (e.g. bug spray, fuel for portable stoves, etc.).
  • It carries easily in a pocket; no need for a sheath.
  • It's more than just a knife blade; the additional tools give it capabilities that even a large fixed blade won't have.
  • With the exceptions of batoning; felling, limbing, and or sectioning large trees; and hammering, I think the Farmer X really is enough blade to handle most any task in the woods.

I prefer bright-colored handles, especially on woods knives, because that makes them easier to find if dropped.  I started with a silver Farmer X (when that was the only color available), and now have acquired and switched to a red Farmer X (pictured).  I'll continue to be on the lookout for other colors, and will gladly switch again if I find another color even more easily spotted than the red.

With the understanding that the right answer may ultimately be "none", I'm still on the hunt for the ideal fixed blade to accompany my Farmer X.  With the further understanding that one picture of three knives still only counts as one entry, here is a picture of a couple of decent candidates (Mora Garberg and TOPS BOB Fieldcraft) flanking the Farmer X.

I can *probably* come up with a picture of the australian outback :P - but it's dark out just now, so you'll have to settle for a shot of my "wilderness knife" (more accurately my "everything knife" but what'cha gunna do)

"What makes it your favourite wilderness knife, sea monster?"

Well, I'm glad you asked!

It's got a 90mm blade (3.5" for you folks)
4mm thick at the spine (just over 1/8")
drop point, full tang...

It's almost like the person who made it was following the exact same thought process as whoever designed the BRK bushcrafter :P

It goes everywhere with me, and I've used it for everything from scraping paint and cutting up carpet to carving wood.

its relatively slim profile (compared to big camp or hunting knives) means it can slip easily into a pocket or pouch for travel and I don't have to look like crocodile dundee with a big f-off knife hanging off the belt.

plus, it's a one off handmade knife, no other knife exactly like it in the world, and it was half the price of an equivalent knife from any of the brands carried in camping and hunting stores!
