I personally don’t understand the pricing but more so I don’t understand the design. Either everything should lock or nothing should in my little mind. If this tool had a non-locking blade it would make perfect sense to me and I suspect they’d sell a lot of them in places that require non-locking blades.

On the good side, the design does look like it’ll be more the thickness of the Signal. In fact, if the tools locked I’d buy one. Hypothetically, I’d like for one of my friends to get one so I could play with it.

I think one problem is that many places that restrict locking blades also restrict one-hand-opening blades.

I suppose my confusion is this: The Curl sacrifices two tools compared to the Wave, and as a result gets a 20% price cut, despite being more than 80% the tool.

Bearing in mind how similar they are, going deeper than a 20% price cut doesn't seem realistic unless the Wave was priced crazy high and they acknowledged that.

Actually, it loses the replaceable cutters, the serrated blade, the saw and the eye glass screwdriver. It does gain the awl though. The lack of locks would seem to make the manufacturing process easier as well. I think it would sell better at $69 or less.

It still has cutters, they just aren't replaceable, that is not the loss of a tool imo. Likewise the eyeglass bit holder is replaced by the awl, which I think overall would be a favourable change (especially judging by how many people insert awls on here). It is only down two tools/functions compared to the Wave.

The tool locks need to be replaced by a spring and clip holes that need to be drilled and tapped. Probably cheaper, but probably not hugely.

The tool can only go so low whilst maintaining profitability for both the retailer and Leatherman, $69 would certainly be a nicer price point but I can see it being problematic profit wise.

TBH I'd rather see the manufacturing done overseas at least for the budget tools so... y'know they're actually budget. US made will always hold the price tag back from being high value.

It wasn't that many years ago that a brand new Wave was priced at $69.99   I guess that is also throwing me off :ahhh

I do love the toolset and may end up with one before it is said and done

I can't find the Curl, is it showing officially somewhere yet?

Nothing official yet. I was surprised that there is a retail shop showing the Curl for sale.

For what it's worth the wayback machine shows the Wave on Leatherman's site for $89.95-$99.95 back in April 2015, if that's accurate how far back are you thinking?

I really like the idea of the Curl, but I'll 99% skip it as I already have a Wave  :dunno:

The Bond still has it's eyes on my wallet in the future anyway

Well, I purchased my first Wave for $59 on Amazon in 2013, but even back then it was normally $89-99 (which is why I jumped on it when I had the chance to buy it cheaper). I remember lusting after a Wave since mid-2011 when I was a high school sophomore and $99 might as well have been $990,000 as far as my allowance was concerned.

I'm guessing the price on Leatherman's website is probably a bit higher than most retailers?

Looking at the US the price is the same on Amazon, BladeHQ, and KnifeCenter as it is on the Leatherman site, so I just assumed it was like Benchmade and LM impose a certain pricing  :dunno:

Forgive my ignorance, but what does MAP stand for?

The Wayback Machine shows Leatherman selling the Signal for $109 in January 2015.

Minimum Advertised Price. A lot of times this policy really means the lowest price you can sell an item for?

A quick google gave this: https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/leatherman-price-increase.1175671/

But from the looks of it the Curl pricing seems pretty inline with the status quo for the last 6 years or more  :dunno:

Yes, I think this is what bothers me.  I bought a Wave back around 2007 for around that price.  I know that’s been quite a few years, but I don’t think my paycheck is keeping pace with the Wave, or Leatherman products in general:-)

The current price for a leatherman wave is actually less than a brand new Curl..I have no idea how they are going to profit.

On a side Note, I got confirmation on the phone, August 17 is release date ~

The listed price for the Wave at several large retailers is $99, the images and feedback we have so far for the Curl is $79...

So how is the current price lower? What are you actually referencing here?

If I want to buy a brand new Wave right now...I can find it all over the internet at $80. On ebay from good sellers occasionally as low as $70.

if your paying $100 for a wave you are seriously overpaying

UK price is, on average, £100 - £120 ($139 - $167) for a new Wave+ and doesn't awlways include postage  ::)

$100 = £72 which would make it £12 (or $17) more than my Bond

Ebay sellers... doesn't really seem applicable here. You're being incredibly vague about where you're getting this bargain of a Wave at $80. So here is a list of what I'd consider major US retailers that have it at the same price as Leatherman's site:

-Amazon
-Walmart
-BladeHQ
-Knife Center
-Cabelas
-REI
-Lowes
-Homedepot
-Tractor Supply
-ACE Hardware
-Bass Pro
-Dick's Sporting Goods

That's probably not all of them, but I'm also not american and think this list is large enough to make my point. If you can find a Wave being sold at a regular price of $80 (not clearance or coupons) then it will be a very heavy outlier and I'd be surprised if they had any stock left after the MTOers found out.

I will go so far as to say that even if that regular price does exist somewhere, it's such an outlier that it has absolutely no bearing on the industry standard price for the Wave and has no place being the point you decry the price of the Curl with. Leatherman doesn't care if you can grab a tool at a discount on a store like Ebay, because Ebay doesn't set the price level for jack all on new products.

The price of Leatherman in the UK is insane, I got my Wave for an absolute steal... becuase I bought a deliberately broken one and warrantied it. They sent a brand new one
