Delemont 30 Day Challenge - October
on: December 10, 2020, 02:14:43 AM
Kev D has very kindly penciled in the Delemont 30 Day Challenge for October, which I'd originally posted in the 30 Day Challenges for 2021 thread, rather than directly here :twak:

As there's been a bit of correspondence already I'll quote that below, but a brief summary first

This will be a 30 day challenge for your old Wengers or newer VIC Delemonts.
Bring out those SI’s, 65, 85, 120 and 130mm models for some time in the sun. Rangers, Evo’s and the many many models Wenger graced us with.

Rules are pretty simple, just need to post a daily photo, in use or glamour, whatever you like but you are expected to exclusively use your Delemonts for the whole challenge. If you do need to use another tool, eg needed pliers let us know why.

Obviously we’d like to hear about your uses and stories behind the knife too, why you chose it, how you acquired it etc, but not mandatory. Stick with one, switch daily, the choice is yours.

If you normally carry a VIC, might be a great chance to dust off your old Wenger again. The more the merrier so look forward to as many of you as possible signing up

ET    :tu:

Correspondence from the original thread;

great idea...  these are always hiding in plain sight... Might as well put them into a challenge.
(I don't have one... yet)

I'd love to carry my 120mm for a month. :like:

YES! I love the 85mm size of the Wengers... I would totally be in for this!

Feel free to use the following thread as a scratchpad to work out the details.  Meanwhile, I need to do some research on Wenger throwbacks.
https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,85623.0.html

 :tu: EB

I'd be up for a Delemont challenge!   :tu:

gives me enough time to go shopping...
also I like the name "Delemont Challenge"

Thanks EB :tu:
Thought it’d be nice to be able to get out a few old Wengers or some new VIC Delemonts for some use. It’s quite easy to forget just how many great models there were/are as I think more people carry 91/93mm models.
I’m very keen on my Evo’s and Ranger and have never really used the Everest so want to give them a proper go…old soldiers too

I'm in. I've got a handful of Wengers, and a singular Delemont.

I'm hoping to find a bigger (120mm or above) Delemont, Wenger, or SwissBuck before this starts.

Funny, while I was thinking about possibly joining this challenge, I got the S557 out of the drawer and toyed a bit with it. Within minutes, it reminded me why I loathe and never use it - despite its superb toolset and splendid wooden scales - by fraying and ripping my thumb's fingernail.

Getting a tool out of this knife (especially the ones in the middle, in particular the Philips driver and the wrench) is like trying to rip a nail out of a wall. The Wenger design department must have been full of sadists. The Evowood 14 is a bit better (I actually like this one, the toolset and handles are just too nice not to), but only to the extent that it can be considered tolerable. Really, as I write this, the thought of getting the Philips out of the S557 gives me an unpleasant feeling and triggers a slight residual pain in the nail bed.

Except if they are full of gunk, I never had comparable problems with my Vics. What was Wenger thinking? Did they hate their customers and secretly longed to get bust?  >:(

After reading your post thought I’d check out a YouTube review, the guy said much the same thing Simon, nail nicks badly thought out, middle tools hard to open, he also said the wrench is almost useless by not being on the edge making it very difficult to get purchase on a nut. Shame as it looks good on paper.

I’ve an evo 14 and 18 and like them a lot, personally don’t think they suffer the same problems and I like the grip you get with the scales, others don’t I know.

Anyway if you feel like a spot of sadism be great to have you on board with the S557, if only to tell us why it’s so bad in use. That evowood 14 sounds like it could do with another chance

I love my VICS too but wanted an excuse to give the wengers a work out, obviously there’s not much to choose between them with the old soldiers, so I suspect the more modern ones are going to give the most interesting feedback

Let's see how much of this I can do with my 1980s and 1990s Wengers. Of course, their saws suck, but then I have my EVO17 Mike Horn. Gonna have to have one with the file. The Master, with a Craftsman 4-in-1 "clover" type driver (since it has no drivers--its' a corkscrew version) ought to do 99.5% of what I'd ever need.  I like the Wenger slipjoint for some jobs over Vic's standard pliers. Also, on Vic pliers, the spring likes to pop away from the plier arm.

Excellent Cody, good to have you on board. I've got an Everest with the slipjoint pliers, TBH haven't used it much but it's a good idea  :tu:

Sorry Echotech at a guess I've only got around 10 Wengers.  Definitely not enough to do one a day but enough that I'm not going to feel restricted.  :)

Hi Bobby, just in case you’re unsure how to add your name to the list, find the most recent post with the full list, hit quote, copy the list and then add your name and number, eg 10. BobbyRsa
You can remove the previous persons message and quote marks.
(apologies if I’m teaching you to suck eggs!)

Be great to have you onboard  :tu:

Your 111mm may arrive a bit late but there’s a 111 challenge in January if you’re keen (One Eleven 'n One Twenty-one).
You could always start when it arrives and just continue on into February until you hit 30 days to still qualify for the badge
