Day 5 (part two)

Here are the results!
The Signal cut the straps to open the package, scraped off the sealer around the old faucet gasket, broke off one of the winged nuts, and opened the new sealer's tube;  and I'm more aware of what a wuss I am! Even with ALL breakers off, I sweated like a roasting pork while replacing the receptacle, as it was one of the few instances in my life that I did not used insulated pliers to work.  [ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

@JonesE: the black oxide is fantastic!

@Rich_SD: I think I'd go with the file. But I do find a saw useful when working in my yard.

@Juan El Boricua: you scored pretty well! :tu:

@Poncho65: :iagree:

@Cypren: I hate those things, too. Why anyone ever thought that might be a good idea is beyond me.

@m47mu74nt: the locomotive looks kinda cool with the bit smokestack.

Another great day, y'awl! :2tu:

Day 5

I got a new phone yesterday, which fixed the comms issue. And I got the old one out of its godawful soft inner,/hard outer case. The Signal helped to deal appropriately with that abomination.

In the below photo, the piece cut with the plain portion of the blade is at the left, and a piece cut with the serrated portion is at the right. The serrated portion seemed to cut easier, but the plain portion cut cleaner.

Day 5

Installing a new home security system. The door/window sensors have these little plastic tabs protecting the batteries during shipping; the instructions seem to think you can pull these things out with your fingers, but I sure can’t manage it without a firmer grip.

Used the blade to remove a package from the bubble wrap envelope.

Then used the blade to cut through the tape security seals in order to remove my new flashlight.

It has been a while since I picked up a Fenix PD35. I am really digging the anodize green.

@Rich_SD: I can only hope you don't have a huge pile of cardboard to dispatch. And you're right: cutting stuff up can be very therapeutic.

@Sos24: I haven't seen a Food Lion in forever! If memory serves me correctly, there was one in Dahlgren, VA.

@Cypren: the joys of moving into a new home! Hope it doesn't need much work.

@JonesE: I like that green, too. Wonder if I'll get FOMO?

@m47mu74nt: the black and silver combo looks pretty sharp!

Another great day, y'awl! :2tu:

Day 6

This is actually from last night...I'm unsure how much hot-spot I'm allotted every month. But the Signal's combo tool is a very effective can opener.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

One knock on the Signal is that it can't be completely closed when the combo tool, awl, or bit driver is in use.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Now, if I'd just put Photoshop Express on my new phone, I wouldn't have to mess with the hot-spot.

Great combos JonesE and M47; love me those greens!
"One knock on the Signal is that it can't be completely closed when the combo tool, awl, or bit driver is in use." FarmerX, can concur with you on this one but, I CAN close the tool with the awl deployed, even have the locking tab on; have they changed, for the worse, the design!?!? Right now, my 0918 (pictured next) can.

Day 6

Yeah, so I am constantly saying how I almost never use a multitool saw.  Well, what would you freakin' know - I used the Signal's saw today.  I was fixing a broken pipe in my irrigation system that was connected to an anti-siphon valve.  For the life of me, I couldn't get the end of the broken pipe out of the valve.  My nipple extractor (he he) couldn't get a grip on the broken pipe end, so I used the saw to cut grooves in the pipe.  Viola!  The pipe came out.

So what do I do immediately after?  Well, of course I go through with my plan and replace the saw with a file anyway.

Day 6

Still waiting on delivery of my workshop tools (two more days!), so I can’t properly install electrical cable in the basement. Since I need to go back to (remote) work tomorrow, I’m making do in the meantime by stringing extension cords from eye hooks in the joists.

I will say that doing this challenge has really driven in — no pun intended — how the single most important function for me in a multitool is a good screwdriver. The Signal’s absolutely miserable implementation of the bit driver (seriously, what were they thinking, making the tool unable to close when the driver is out?) has been a nightmare for the last six days and I can’t see myself ever carrying this tool again once the challenge is over.

That is the benefit of the challenge. Carry the tool for 30 days and see how it plays out. I will say for the Signal, on paper it looks good. In the real world it has some weak points. The execution of the inner tools for the carabiner and hammer is one.

I prefer when a screwdriver can be used when the tool is closed, but after using a Skeletool for a long time, it doesn't bother me so much.  What's funny is that after using my ARC so much, what bothers me the most about the Signal bit driver is that I can't open it one-handed.

I don’t remember for certain if there is a Food Lion in Dahlgren, but know there is one near Wallops and if you went to Dahlgren, you were probably also at Wallops.  Food Lions are popular in VA and NC but not sure how much beyond there.

I agree on the frustration that the Signal doesn’t fully close when using the inside tools.

I have to laugh, because reading through this thread would have you believe Leatherman is missing an opportunity to turn their “outdoor tool”. Into an urban tool with just a few minor modifications.

Nice light and beautiful green.  Fenix makes great lights, I just wish they would use more neutral LEDs

Doing some testing with my Firebox Nano stove.

The Signal pliers cam in handy with handling the hot Toaks alcohol stove to pour back excess fuel and with lifting the gas burner out without waiting for it to cool.

You'll see that red one most of the month fore sure : it's mine and it's modded to fit my urban needs (still lacking the mod Rich shown the over day) with metal file and scalpel blade.

Opened packets today, nothing much interesting, so a pic of it chillin'
