Do need to polish up the pivot bolsters, as the pocket sheath apparently tarnishes the bolsters.

I don’t carry it much, as it is smaller than I generally prefer.  I certainly don’t have every pattern, but my Case collection pretty much spans the range from Peanut and small Stockman to up to Folding Hunter and a fixed blade or two.

[ Quoting of attachment images from other messages is not allowed ]

From that pic, it looks like you could work it similarly the the Vic half moon opener. Rest the nub on the rim, push down, work forwards. I looked at a couple other Wards floating around the net, and they all look more similar to the "upside down ones I showed a few of this month, where you get the sharp side under the lid and push up to cut. Not sure if yours is different, or just the angle/lighting of the pic.

This thread and this video: have a lot of good info.

Generally, I just try them very carefully different ways until they cooperate. There's really only like 4 ways they can work unless you get a truly weird one. Forward or backward and up or down.

30 Scouts in 30 Days: Day 17

The Workman from yesterday and this Imperial Diamond Edge nicely show either side of the line between Scout* (or maybe Scout+) and non-Scout knife-multi IMO. I'll agree that almost any slipjoint (although we have seen a few liner locks as well, so I guess I'd let that go) with most or all of the scout tools in a traditional "cigar" shaped handle is a scout, as long as they all open from the same side (but not necessarily end). A Farmer X is still a Scout*/+. But once you start putting tools on the back, I have to draw the line. Other than that, a serviceable, but not stand out, pocket knife.

30 Scouts? in 30 Days: Day 18

I spent the last couple days asking how much could add to the Scout toolset (Knife, awl, flat driver, can opener) and still technically be a Scout*. Today, I planned to do the opposite, picked out a knife to carry, and then had some second thoughts.

I think most of us would agree that "junior" Scouts with 3 blades (knife, flat driver and either an awl or can opener depending on model) are still Scouts (maybe Scout* or Scout-).

So I picked out a knife that only has two blades, but that I occasionally see referred to as a Scout, and prepared to put my foot down.

So here it is, the Marble's Gi Jack:
[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Depending on who you ask, this is is either a variant of a sailor's knife, or half of a demo knife. The latter, I think, is why it sometimes gets called a Scout.

It's a little shorter than most Scouts (~3 1/3"), but that's not out of the ordinary for the Jr Scouts. Feels great in pocket, looks alright, has the bail, durable and well constructed, nice sheepsfoot blade, and a killer can opener.

But when I took it out of the drawer last night to carry today, I remembered it does have a 3rd tool.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Right up there at the top of the pic is a flathead screwdriver. I tested it, and it squeezed into a plate cover screw, which means it'll work well on more common medium or large size flats. It can't fold up on you. It's a hell of a scraper. Nothing for reach but, in some ways, actually better than the SD on most Scouts. The slightly odd shape of the can opener makes it a decent bottle opener (it still mangles the cap, but it's pretty easy to get it to catch and pop compared to some others.)

It meets the other criteria (it's a slipjoint pocket knife) and it even has the aesthetic down. Do all the tools need to fold out? Could someone make a multi shaped like one of those 4 way lug wrenches with one tool (nonfolding) on each end of the cross and have that count? WHERE DOES IT END?

I think this is where it ends. You have to have at least a folding knife to be pocket knife, and I don't think anyone is making anything with a non-folding can/bottle opener/driver. Marbles GI Jack: Scout*/-. Since it's based on a sailor's knife, maybe we should call is a Sea Scout knife or something. (Ironically, if they just put a marlin spike on it [FRONT SIDE ONLY!], I'd consider giving it credit for the awl.)
