Catch up post (got sidetracked by life and forgot to post  :facepalm:)

I did manage to get some vaguely practical use yesterday when I used the Phillips driver to tighten up the escutcheon plate on the front door lock.

Other than that that no real use for the G.O.A.T

Let's see what Day 4 brings  :dunno:

Day 4: I did use the Package Opener on the Roxon Flex Plier based to cut a few cardboard boxes as tommorow the paper will get pick up by the garbage Collection workers ..

Your SAK is only fully yours, when it bites you, or you opend a Trink of your joice whit it
SAKs i have: Huntsman Light (Red Transparent), Workchamp (Black), Wenger EvoGrip S557 (Red), Swisschamp XLT (Red Transparent).. Swisschamp (Blue Transparent) Cybertool L (Blue Celidor (custom scales) , Huntsman (Black Celidor) , Victorinox EvoGrip S557 (Red, but sadly lost in my house somewhere) Victorinox Delemont S17 and S57 ..  , waiting for: Swiza D09 Blue

Hi Kev'

I was an early adopter of the G.O.A.T and waited for what must have been the best part of two years for its arrival  :ahhh

I opted for a number of extras including the S35VN blade etc That said, I'm not getting on with it at all. I find the thumb holes too small for proper OHO along with the actual mechanism causing me to dismantle it as I try to open it.

I could have opted for a non-locking blade (to make it UK EDC friendly) but I suspected that there would be no half stop and could therefore, lead to potential for the blade to fold back in anything but light use (unlike my Spyderco UKPK)

Basically, I spent more on this thing than I did on my LM Arc and I've used it more in this challenge (4 days) than I have done since I got it.

I'm sure others love it but it just doesn't really work for me  ::)

I have tried to get the Flex Companion but it seems vitually impossible in the UK  :shrug: :bnghd:

Sorry to hear that Surge. It sounds like I got lucky waiting for the Roxon. While I miss my Leatherman, I am also enjoying the Roxon and the easy modifications...

Awl I did was put a lanyard on the G.O.A.T but I really can't imagine that it'll lead to it being carried more (UK blade rules etc.  :twak:)

Day 4

Gotta say, not sure how thrilled I am on the Roxon side of the fence. In the unlocked position, I can flick hard enough to not only deploy all the tools (sometimes some lock, but not all), but open the tool release. The odds that I'll literally fling everything across the room seem vanishingly small, and I guess I should keep it locked, but this:

1. Doesn't do a lot for my feelings about the sturdiness of the tool.

2. Probably a safety issue.

3. Probably a legal issue in some jurisdictions if you have a knife blade on there.

I spent a lot less than Surge on my Roxon parts, but I'm also not looking forward to using it much besides the challenge. In general, both Flexes are kind of bulky and cheap feeling. I'm going to soldier on for now, but debating buying the set of implements I currently have in my cart or just cutting my losses and finishing out the month with what I have.

Merit Badges Participants shall carry and use one Soldier knife, the model of their choosing, for the duration of the 90 days and post a picture each day. My long hook tool that I made came in handy yesterday when I was trying to pull this pad out of a wooden wagon without damaging it with a blade.

Sorry to hear that you don’t really like the GOAT, which makes the inability to get the Companion even worse.

Your comments on the GOAT do make me glad I decided nto pass until I saw more reviews.

My verdict is still out on the Companion.  My initial impression is that it is kind of bulky for the actual tool utility.

Day 5

My Companion is still in "waiting for flight" status for package tracking so I'm embracing a one tool carry with my Flex. I'm surprised people feel it is cheap or that the quality isn't there though.

I feel that it is put together really well. I do have plenty to compare it to from no name off brands to very expensive Leatherman and Victorinox offerings. Having some adjustment when switching tools seems reasonable to me, especially since if you are carrying extra swappable tools on the go, carrying the supplied torx around is not a stretch.

I do see areas for improvement but I guess for a first gen product I'm far more impressed than underwhelmed. I obviously can't comment on the Companion yet.

I just used the Flex SE blade for cutting up some cardboard and then the pliers to press on some scales I designed and printed for another tool. I don't have the OHO blade yet but the standard PE blade is quite good and slicey for food prep (no pic).

Gotta say, not sure how thrilled I am on the Roxon side of the fence. In the unlocked position, I can flick hard enough to not only deploy all the tools (sometimes some lock, but not all), but open the tool release. 1. Doesn't do a lot for my feelings about the sturdiness of the tool.

 :iagree:  I'm starting to have the same issue with my Companion. I'll be working on something and all of a sudden notice another tool has opened. I don't seem to have this issue with the original Flex.

The other thing I find very frustrating is the second step of getting the scissors open after they are locked in place. I can't seem to remember how to open them without sticking myself. I may just be a little slow...  :doh:

Since I can't seem to open a scissors without hurting myself, I'm pretty sure I would lose a hand trying to use the scalpel...  :rofl: :rofl: :rofl:

I found a drop or two of mineral oil in the pivot area helped the scissors immensely. I sure don't miss doing this with the 110 from last month.

It took me several tries with the scissors and I still forget sometimes.  I think part of it is because to unfold the scissors you go the opposite direction of opening and to fold the scissors you go the direction of opening (opposite close).  To me it seems like it should be the opposite.

I've been pretty happy with the Flex Companion.  I do wish it was about one layer thinner in the pocket, but I wouldn't want to sacrifice a tool to achieve that.  I also think it would be cool if they made one of the liners a little thicker and more robust in order to have a short bit of it protrude from the end of the tool as a large slotted (flat) driver / scrapping / prying tool.  Just like the old British army knives.
