Day 14
I remembered I hadn't posted for day 15,but then realized I forgot my day 14 post yesterday, been a day lemme tell you. Few days.
For Light my Fire [sorry to butcher your title Gary  :D] my EDC and, some solicited Bic pics heh heh
I alternate between a Zippo and a Bic as my primary, the Bic then stays in my larger EDC pouch [Maxped Griphook]. My Bic has a few "Ranger bands" on it,to look cool [because we all want our Bics to looks cool],and easy to identify, and whatever else those bands can be used for.
My primary EDC light is my Surefire L2,old faithful, with a Fenix E01 with my "other" SAK [Delux Tinker, mostly].
I have a backup mini Bic in my pocket pouch.

Good one Humayd.  Points awarded and all that.  Seems like many members aren't satisfied with one flashlight, knife, or lighter.  Got to have several.  I carry a Bic in my belt pack.  Don't usually carry a flashlight.
Time for a flashlight story.  I phoned my neighbor Gene.  He has a house in Florida, but decided he wanted to stay about half the year up here in Western NC.  Well, the electricity went out and there wasn't a light in the place.  Dark as a witch's cat outside.  He got out of bed and got disoriented.  Told me he was going to put a flashlight by his bed from now on.
I keep two LED cheap flashlights by mine.  Never buy batteries for them.  As soon as a trail camera won't function with the batteries in it, I take them out and use them in my little flashlights.  They run a long time there.
Best wishes.  G

:tu: I liked my E01 quite a bit until it succumbed to alkaline leakage. I like its replacement Sofirn C01 even more because of its high CRI, warmer emitter.

I'm 3 or 4 days behind on the Nessmuk quotes, so gonna do some catch up there first.

"If there is a spot on earth where trifles make up the sum of human enjoyment, it is to be found in a woodland camp." Definitely true. When you've got less stuff, it's all about the little things.

I'm going to do some Nessmuk cooking for tonight's post, but here's some other cooking quotes to start:

"The universal flapjack, I do not like it." Scandalous. He prefers Johnny Cakes (cornbread) which I'll talk more about below.

Quote
Cut a club two feet long and three inches thick at the broadest end; peel or shave off the bark smoothly, and sharpen the smaller end neatly. Then stick the sharpened end in the ground near the fire, leaning the broad end toward a bed of live coals, where it will get screeching hot. While it is heating, mix rather more than a half pint of best Minnesota flour with enough warm water to make a dough. Add a half teaspoonful of salt, and a teaspoonful of sugar, and mould and pull the dough until it becomes lively. Now, work it into a ribbon two inches wide and half an inch thick, wind the ribbon spirally around the broad end of the club, stick the latter in front of the fire so that the bread will bake evenly and quickly to a light brown, and turn frequently until done, which will be in about thirty minutes. When done take it from the fire, stand the club firmly upright, and pick the bread off in pieces as you want it to eat. It will keep hot a long time, and one soon becomes fond of it.

I'm definitely making this one at camp later this month. Weird but interesting. "Built different"  :D I think we did something similar with Pillsbury biscuits in Scouts.

He likes green tea. No quote there, just a bit of trivia. Coffee is good too.

On porcupines, "like spring lamb, only better."

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

And I made his Johnny Cake recipe today. Here it is:

Quote
a plain water Johnnycake, made as follows [...] Put a little more than a pint of water in your kettle and bring it to a sharp boil, adding a small teaspoonful of salt, and two of sugar. Stir in slowly enough good corn meal to make a rather stiff mush, let it cook a few minutes, and set it off the fire; then grease your largest tin dish and put the mush in it, smoothing it on top. Set the dish on the out-door range[...], with a lively bed of coal beneath—but no blaze. Invert the second sized tin over the cake, and cover the dish with bright live coals, that bottom and top may bake evenly, and give it from thirty-five to forty minutes for baking. It makes wholesome, palatable bread, which gains on the taste with use.

"Gains on taste with use" is a nice way of saying, "mediocre." I've made several old fashioned corn bread, Johnny cake, etc. recipes over the years. This is neither the best, nor the worst. He includes both salt and sugar, which is unusual, but appreciated. The texture is a bit on the rough side, but they're certainly edible. I made a small batch and it won't go to waste.

I think I had rather have corn dodgers.  Rather like a hush puppy.  No leavening in corn bread always will be mediocre.  I always called biscuit dough wrapped around a stick 'bannock'.  Plain old tortillas are probably better than any of that.
Congrats on trying a little of everything to see what works.  Best wishes.  G

Day 15
My messed up schedule, late posting, etc has finally caught up with the day/date again
 :woohoo:

Today we get a bit of pocket chainsaw action. These saplings are wedged between a house and AC unit with little clearance and an akward reach. I could have gone back to the jeep for the gerber saw or saw back machete, but I had this in my tool bag.
These work great on old wood, hard wood and larger linbs/branches BUT this small soft stuff is rough and likes to kink and bind. It still worked but with just 1tpi set in reversing direction every 2 teeth bigger wood is easier than this little stuff.

On a side note: I also have built several fire kits around these saws, packed w/fero rod, storm matches, pocket knife, etc... all the usual stuff packed in a very small pouch.

Kephart has a corn dodger recipe that I tried (also unleavened). In the end, I landed on making a dodger version of his "Superior Corn Bread" which includes eggs, leavening, and molasses, to take to a book club tomorrow.

Those chainsaw chains with handles are darn handy. I've even used mine in place of a pole saw by putting long lengths of paracord around the handles. I tend to keep it behind the seat in the UTV.

Also--don't be me. An accident with my ST300 cost a grand when I accidentally punctured the coil with my ST300's sheepsfoot in 2018 or so. Pretty sure had I used my saw like yours, it would not have happened--BUT it was thin brush any saw doesn't cut well--blades only.

Day 14:

Kaufmann Small Mercator. Oddly, not marked Mercator anywhere.  The only way I can date it is that Samson Cordage Works went from having a MA headquarters and Bellingham, WA branch in the early '80s--to just having Bellingham, WA be their head office. Knife looks like it's from the '50s to me.

I've had it for ages. Probably one of the first knives I bought used off eBay, and it was my go-to for years. It's light, but tough. Also, excellent snap.

As for naughty Kottskrapa, some lady showed up in a car and dragged him away.  She had a firm grip on one of his ears and was giving the other ear the business verbally.  Wow.  She came looking for me, but I'm not afraid of women.  I would have told her so if she had found me behind those boxes in the broom closet.
Best wishes. G

Day 15 - a bit late but I had my phone confiscated AND had to put together some padio furniture with the ratchet tool that came with the furniture, I begged and cried to be allowed to get my own toolbox but she said that muddy kids get crappy tools.. When I finally had it all together there was a gin and tonic waiting for me and then straight to bed!

Day 16

If anyone is due any points from the Monday Mini Challenge, you can ask.  I locked the jar up in my secret jar locking up location.  There are still plenty of points left in it.
Just as soon as it gets light enough to spot the snakes and yellow jacket nests I plan on weedwacking a while.  There was thunder for about 2 hours yesterday, but nary drop of water hit the ground.  It probably would have sizzled if it had.  How about a photo of an Opinel at W-Mart?  There are plenty of smallish ornamental type trees planted all around the lot.  Might have to post a photo of some more George sports watches.  $11 Casio sports watch knock-offs.  Best wishes.  G

Day 16 - well, it's anything goes and today I traded in my Mitsubishi outlander 2014 to a Volvo xc70 2016 (last year it was produced) Now I have had the first v70 from -97, a xc70 from -03 and one from -16 and I love this car! If not a multitool it's still a multi...gadget? The remote does lock and unlock the car.. But can also start the light, open and close the windows, start the heater, start the alarm and tell me if the car is locked or not.. And surely send the car to the moon if I know the right sekvens to the buttons.. Sooooo many things that can give me a headache but as for now I'm just pleased 😂

 :hatsoff:
Thanks Gary  :salute:
There was a time when one was enough, but then two became one,and one became none.
I prefer redundancy though.
That's how i started carrying a ballpen. I got into a fender bender, maybe '93,my fault,i crossed a dual carriageway after a car passed, and did not see the next car. I can still see the drivers expression just before he hit me. I did not have a pen for the info swap and started carrying 1 that day.
I like reusing and repurposing, love it actually. That's almost like free batteries  :D

New knife day for me today.

Picked up a Kershaw 4320 Federalist. It has no backspring like traditional slip joints, but uses detents in what feels like the closed, half stop position, and full open. I am carrying it alongside the peanut today which got the honors of opening it from the package.

Just for fun. I actually bought it when .22LR was hard to find and selling at scalper's prices. I never ran out and actually needed to reload .22s, but I like knowing I could if I needed to.
I also have a couple of the cap and ball black powder NAA revolvers, and the bullet mold part of this tool works well for those. And I have a capmaker and have actually made my own black powder for about a dollar a pound, so it's possible to load the black powder NAA for around one cent per shot. That's cheaper than most of my airguns!
