Day 18

Compared to the 5! on the Swisschamp, the TC+ only has the basic two backside tools. The corkscrew is more or less the same (both companies have adjusted the number of turns over time), but the awl has a few differences from the Victorinox version: no sewing eye, no edge, a bit pointier, but (a huge plus IMO) a scale cut out to make it easier to deploy.

Beautiful shot!

Monday, December 22nd Challenge: Tis The Season
Get a pic of your knife doing something festive. If nothing else, just snap a pic of it next to your Christmas lights, tree, Menorah, or whatever.

Day 19

Unlike Vic, Wenger's scale tools are on the "inside" of the scales. I don't know what the reasoning for this was (practical, cosmetic, ?), but I don't love it. I find them much harder to grab, particularly the tweezers, which have no real "head" and awlways make me feel like I'm gonna rip a nail off. Used Wengers seem to be missing the T and/or T more than Vics. Not sure if they're more likely to fall out, or just that spares are harder. I've bought a couple cheap/beaten up Wengers over the years just because they had a complete set of scale tools to swap into my users.

That concludes our tour of the Tool Chest Plus! But I have a surprise or two in store for the rest of the month.

I agree that Victorinox did a better job with their scale tools. Genuine Wenger replacements are unquestionably harder to find. I've had a genuine Wenger toothpick break and become partially "impacted" in its slot, which makes me wonder how many other Wenger toothpicks met the same fate.

I briefly dabbled in stick-and-tissue aircraft. Believe me, laser-cut pieces were much easier to remove from the balsa strip than their die-cut equivalents.

Pretty cool.

Day 20

Delémonts Evolution/Evo Grip S54s were on a deep discount earlier this year, so I snapped one up. Differences from the TC+ include:

1. Evogrip scales. I'm not a big fan of the base Evo scales, but the Evogrips are... grippy. Awlso better on a larger knife than they are on smaller ones.

2. Victorinox can opener.

3. Victorinox awl (no cut out :()

4. External T&T

5. Lock for the blade (looks like a similar mechanism to a backlock. Anyone know how these work?)

Overall, I think I prefer the TC+, but this is a very capable and much more available knife. Used it a bunch of times today for several things.

Vics scale tools are much better for daily use than  those of Wenger.

Really sad that Wenger got out of business...

I looked at mine and couldn't figure it out. I'm not willing to disassemble the knife to further research it. However, I was able to disengage the blade without pushing the lock lever down. PSA: don't put excessive faith in a locking blade!

By the way, I measured the saw's cutting edge while I had the Security 52 out. A Wenger's saw has about 60mm of cutting edge. By contrast, a 91mm Victorinox saw has about 67.5mm of cutting edge. As I don't own an 84mm Vic with a saw, I couldn't get a more direct comparison.

Opening an egg in an unconventional way.
Though that could be a little messy, I :like: it!

Day 21

I awlso have a Workchamp XL that I got on sale a while ago. I haven't shown/carried it since it's completely impractical. It's about the same size as, but heavier than, a Supertool 300 (within about 10 grams of the SURGE!) But I finished showing off everything on the TC+, so might as well do some cameos.

It does have a nice big blade, which did a fine job of slicing strudel at the Christmas market my wife and I visited today.

How do you carry the XXL? I'd think it would go best in a shoulder holster!

What a big tree! How beautoful!

Normally I toss the XXL in the bags of my pullover. Don't really notice it. Most of the time I use the XLT. It has everything I need at home and outdoors.

Day 23

The 111mm cap lifter is probably the tool with the greatest difference from its smaller brethren. A line lock is welcome on any screwdriver, and the thickened stock is great for scraping and prying (and let's be honest, it gets used for that more than driving GIANT SLOT HEAD screws).

I believe the one with the extra bump is officially the belt cutter and the one without is the gutting blade, but  :dunno:
