You take great photos, Pilot.  How about a photo of the tang stamp of that nice black knife?  Is that possible?  Any ideas about country of origin? Best wishes.  Gary
Thanks Gary. Took two photos, one of the stamp and one with a ruler to show the size better. Haven't thought about it much but I just googled about the country of origin and found out these were manufactured in the 50's in East Germany. So this may  be 70 years old now :O

A tradition blade. I just received this in the mail yesterday. And...I didn't have to sell my garment to obtain it.
Sweet knife. How do you like the wider blade these have? I like the looks of this blade geometry, looks like a great cutter with a bit more beef to it than slimmer Vic blades. I tend to think the more width the blade has the more force I can use comfortably with it. Those D-rings are something that modern knives/SAKs should have also in some models, not only in traditional ones

Hi, pilotsupergrip.  Nice knife. :like:

Some words about the producer: GML stands for "Genossenschaft der Messerschmiede Leegebruch". (association of the knifesmiths of Leegebruch). Leegebruch is a small town in the county of Brandenburg in eastern germany. GML was one of the biggest producers of cutlery in the GDR, producing from 1946 till 1991, founded by some knifemaker refugees from then Chechoslovakia, former Nixdorf, then Mikulášovice, where the famous Mikov knives come from. GML knives were sold to the s o c i a l i s t brother countries from the warsaw pakt, but also to china and several western states, e.g. Finland.

If you're interested in some historical aspects, here's an article (in german): https://www.geschichtsverein-leegebruch.de/messerschmiede/

Best regards and stay safe,

Great information about the East German firm.  I figured someone would know.  Thanks for sharing, Tinker.  I have seen something about the Mikov knives.  They look pretty good.  The internet 'information' is that the GML knives were made by 'Rostfrei'.  Absolutely laughable.
Carrying a Spartan today, but the only tool I used was the locking pliers in the photo.  Jonnesway made in Taiwan, I think.  They seem to be about as good as the US locking pliers.  I know they saved my tail-feathers today.  I saw these things lying in the road one day.  Probably fell off a truck.  They were almost new.  I stopped and picked them up.
My Dad was along, and he grouched and yelled about me stopping to pick up the tool.  Later I was using them on something, and he said, "I remember when you got those things.  You stole them."  I suppose leaving them in the road so they might damage somebody's car was better? Or ruin the pliers.  Best wishes.  Gary

Cool story Gary! My SwissTool is also "stolen". Found it on rural road at the tail end of Sunday's long run some 20 odd years ago. Could not belief my luck!

Also great info on GML gents!
I think I've seen their cutlery in some public cafeterias but not sure.

I think you gave these locking pliers just a new home. No tool should be left to rust :( These do come really handy when you need to apply greater force on a jammed nut. I carried Leatherman Crunch when I was in construction and I used it on many occasions. It was also great for working on motorcycles. Locking pliers rock.

Spartan also rocks. It's a great user/beater SAK as you can pick a new one up cheap from many stores if you happen to break one. I like to use a Spartan when DIYing something and I need a SAK that I can pry with, mix epoxy, drill holes and cut stuff with. Unlike my Huntsman that is mostly used in the woods for carving and food prepping and is kept always sharp and clean.

I used the same reasoning when I removed a pretty well-used old screwdriver from a busy intersection not too long ago.

Good carries and sweet pictures everyone! Nice to see what folks are carrying.

For the last day I've carried mostly the Curl. It was used to open some food package on the road, dig another rotten cactus out from a cluster of cactuses (see a pattern here? My cactus expert friend is telling me to change the soil but like I had the time for that now :D) and trim some plastic diaper packages for ease of access.

Im suprised of the new swisscard. I tried to shove it into my wallet until I need it but I find myself digging it out of it every now and then. Like 5 times a day. The light and the ruler are used more than I thought I would use them. This is funny because I really wanted to have that card for an office/last ditch option but I seem to use it daily. And about the little led there. I have a Fenix E12 here for the nights but that thing blinds me even on the lowest setting. And my Led Lenser P3 is having some intermittent contact issues (hope this is the right word). So I gravitate heavily on a low lumen light of the Swisscard Lite now.

And as for the Curl. I tried to play minimal for a moment but as soon as I went out of the house or had really anything other on my mind than sitting on the sofa with a phone, I put it in my pocket and instantly felt that I have everything I need. You know when you leave your home and you check the phone, keys and wallet. That same kind of feeling.

These are important (intuitive) factors for my EDC because all this is rooted on a real need or feeling of capability. With this feeling I know I have the right gear. Have any of you have the same experiences? Im sure we all have drawers full of MTs and other gear and thats part of the process to find out the gear that suits us best on a given time and for a given task.

Nice carries all!

I feel the same way pilot, if I don't have at least some level of tools on me that I'm used to, it feels strange. I think that's why I've been working on my travel edc little by little, flying is a situation where I can't have the tools on me that I'm used to carrying.

That and your post reminds me that last time I flew, I took a Swisscard and just left the knife out. That's another neat feature of it being individual parts like that. Did you happen to snatch that black one from tori.fi about a week orso ago? I saw one just like it and was tempted even though I have a red one  ;)

This is actually my carry from yesterday. I have sort of settled on the Swisstool Spirit X as being the best for me overall. I don't know about you guys but I like carrying different tools and combos to test out in different situations and with different apparel setups to see what works where. When I am not doing that, I return to a default setup which usually includes either the Spirit X or a Skeletool (or Juice).

I like your setup. Wish I had the time, resources and skill to make my own custom SAK. Your custom makes seem interesting. Been drooling of Spirit X also but as I've got enough LM's I don't feel it would add too much to my collection right now.

Of flying. Do you take a full size MT/other tools in the suitcase to have with you after the flight? I remember a case few years ago when we were in Bulgary and my girlfriends suitcase ripped seam pretty bad because the flight people threw that suitcase around. I had Surge, sewing kit and gorilla tape with me in my suitcase and I managed to fix her suitcase in the hotel.

I've played with the idea these last days to maybe build a combo of SAK + flashlight + something more in a same key ring to carry in pocket at home. Classic SD and some small light would work but I can't do more than a one day without a "normal size" blade. Cant even cut a cucumber with a that short blade :D

Have to check that Tori.fi every now and then if something interesting pops up. To your question about the Swisscard, I actually bought it from Varuste.net because they had a 20% sale for that and LM bitkit.
