I was banned for talking about a banned member. TT pockeTools owner has become a friend of mine and I showed of his tools.

I'm not going to miss the bs

:viking:

No, you were banned for letting people know about a product that isn't paying money to EDCF lol. It's not exactly secret that they hate people doing it, even said it in public a few times.

Unfortunately there are a few forums that used to be good but has gone down this road.

So only products that are paying advertisers with them are allowed to be discussed? ya ok that makes for an open dialog eh?

I had the experience of having two conversations with the site owner.  I have nothing positive to say about the interchange, so I wont say anything about it.

Grant's laid back approach is a breath of fresh air IMO.  He seems like a fellow that would take alot to piss off, so there is no BS admin drama that plagues the other sites.  This place is a NICE forum to be a part of.

I wish we got paid by all the companies we talked about here....

Seriously, there are people and companies I like better than others, and there are people and companies that really don't care for me to put it mildly.  And yet, people here are still allowed to talk about them, their products and their experiences with them, even though they aren't paying me for the privilege.  It's a fine line to walk because a site like this does indeed cost money and it's nice to have a business that at least pays for itself- or so I have heard.... :P

Still, I have said in the past that when people are not allowed to express themselves the site ceases to be a forum and becomes an "againstum."  I have no desire to have that happen here, but other forums and other forum owners have the right to run their forums the way they see fit. There are a few that are against the open policies of this forum as well, and I have gotten a lit of nasty emails and PM's over the years from people who don't think I should allow members or moderators to say some of the things they do.  I apologize to people who say that then suggest that perhaps if they don't like freedom then maybe this isn't the right place for them.  They often come back with saying that the forum endorses this or that behavior..... I don't endorse any behavior other than allowing people to have their say, whether I agree with it or not from a personal or professional standpoint.

Frankly I hate being accused of stuff like this from people who claim that they love freedom, emigrated from one country or another so they could enjoy freedom or suggest that I'm Canadian so I don't understand freedom..... it's all bullsmurf from people who want to control others and make themselves feel special.  Well, my dog thinks I'm special and that's good enough for me.

Sorry for the rant.

I think more importantly we've got trust, not just from the powers that be, but also from our fellow forumites. Unlike other forums where opinions can be misconstrued and lead to shouting matches, generally people here approach any ambiguity in comments from a positive perspective rather than negative, and assume the best from the other peoples comments rather than assume the worst.

The golden rule of no religion or politics helps enormously to eradicate animosity, but beyond that we can all express our feelings without being tarred as right or wrong. More than that, when we get someone new turn up who's used to being in a more blinkered environment preaching their cause, someone steps in to politely smooth things over and share an alternate perspective in a friendly manner instead of simply shout them down, and quite often it's not a mod or admin ... just one of the regulars. Soon enough they develop an eclectic view too. It's a very inclusive atmosphere

Basically because its ok to talk about it here without repercussion from mods. Whats the use in a open conversation if it gets locked away or deleted. The only way to solve a problem is to talk about it. Even if you do it privately, you shouldn't be punished for a difference of opinion. I know I have had several brain farts, but I kept on going.

That goes for any of the Mods here, not just me. And to be honest, most of the off color humor we get a kick out of too, it's just that I know a few members include their kids in tool use, collecting and the forum so it's best if we behave. I'm sure the kids are exposed to worse at school or around a campfire but that doesn't mean I want to be blamed for it!

My ban on EDCF was made permanent.

Sorry that happened.  Whatever, the circumstance, there are lots of good people over there and you were one of them.  We'll miss you there but happy you're here.   :)

MTO is at least as opinionated as EDCF, its just that it usually sticks to the realm of who has the better diamond file or which tool has the superior wire cutters.  Always, good discussion among great people here.     :tu:

I agree the ban on religion and politics is extremely important. Those two subjects are special in the regard that we have a tendency to attach strong, negative stereotypes to those we disagree vehemently with. A person coming from a sufficiently different place regarding politics or religion, it can be hard to think of as the excellent bloke he really is, there are few such mental barriers regarding MTs. I could attach a joke or something here, but I'll instead just

Less drama more jokes..... that's why this place is a big win for me :D

We have fun, we mostly can talk about stuff without it becoming a pointless trolling exercise and we like each other. The generosity and warmth I have received from other members is incredible, and usually spontaneous. That's why I was hooked after a short time here, and still come back to hang out even if my interests change.

I agree.  The lighthearted atmosphere is unparalleled on any other forums.  I am a member of several other sites, and a Moderator on one as well, but this place is my home.  Though you wouldn't know it by looking at my recent (lack of) activity!

I am a member at EDCF still, in fact it was the first forum that I ever liked, and the first one I had more than 100 posts on.  But, as things go, I don't care for it too much anymore especially after all the software changes and the depart from SMF format.  All that pales in comparison to the restrictive atmosphere that is developing.  It's not as bad as CPF, but it's heading there.  Enough dogging on them though, Jon runs his forum the way he wants and as Grant said, every site owner can do as they please.

If you got banned there, but are a member in good standing here, then you have nothing to worry about.  If you manage to get banned from HERE, maybe you ought to look at yourself and figure out why you are such a turd!

While most people go nuts discussing just about anything, here a "charge vs spirit" is the biggest thrill you gonna have.

The ban on politics and religion it's a pity, but I guess happiness always comes with a price (of freedom).  >:D
Mind you I've seen forums banning sports-talk, though. Here it seems to be a peaceful theme, or mostly ignored I should say.

But now, mark my words, all these "unregulated" social Internet activity will come to an end, IMHO. Sooner or later governments will intervene, create some insane laws, as they do at everything else. And it'll be sooner if some money or high profile is affected.

I'm no law speSmurfpillst but it seems obvious that there's a lot of chaos regarding rights both from forums owners and participants. Take a quick example: JAfromMn got banned against his will (I think), then he asked for his posts to be removed and this was denied. Now, who those posts belong to? Who owns its intellectual property? Note some high profile social sites are being forced to have a "delete account" option which removes everything related to that account -- although they usually don't honor that, though.

Another problem happens when people are banned from one place but continue to be talked about on that place... on which they can't defend themselves, because they are banned. That, for instance, is illegal in my country, because everyone has the right to defend him/herself with the same visibility where they were "attacked".

Yeah,  just about sums that one up.......  :P  This is the only forum that I belong to, so no banning stories here.  I can think of a couple of times here that I've gotten a bit close to the line when commenting on politics or world events though..... Better to keep my mouth (keyboard?) shut at times, and concentrate on the sharp and shiny things at hand....

The issue with politics is that there's really nothing constructive that can be accomplished discussing it, and a whole lot of destructive things.  In fact, over the years we've never had a political thread that didn't cause major dissent among members, and even fewer that actually accomplished anything.  There are lots of political forums out there and they don't accomplish anything either, but at least members there know what they are getting into when they join.

Also, I don't think you were ever anywhere near as close to being banned as you may think you were.  In fact, I don't recall the Mods ever discussing the possibility of banning you, and those old biddies yack about everything behind the scenes....

Not necessarily being close to being banned, but I can think of one thread that I started that set off a bit much in the way of political commentary, and was closed.  Wasn't my intent when I made that post, but there you go.  Couple other comments too.  I agree that politics being discussed here serves no purpose here other than dividing people and causing problems.  Things like that can take two people who can be quite friendly here and drive a wedge between them.  That's not what this place is about, better left alone.
