on: December 20, 2009, 05:13:08 PM
first off, i'm sorry if this needs to be in a different section but i think i'm right.

ok now to the guts.  who has upgraded from vista to win 7?  i havent done our new lappie yet. and i'm getting mixed feelings from work.  about half say to wipe and reload with a fresh install and ther others are saying to just upgrade.

whats your input?

Fresh install is always the best way to go for any OS.

A little Leatherman information.

actually you can still fresh install with an upgrade version, as you pointed out, it's required for XP, and it's also required if you want to go from 32bit to 64bit or if you want to install a different language (my laptop has vista spanish 32bit, and I'm planning to wipe in favour of win7 english 64bit )

cool thanks for the input.  i guess i'll have to wait till i have a lot more free time.  gotta backup my personal data first before doing the wipe and reload... hmmm  maybe i should see what hp had on their disc's that i got.  with the season being insane (well for us at least) i hope they gave me a drivers disc.   or i could upgrade, then run a back up of the system with the HP backup stuff and then do a wipe and reload.  an extra step (well a huge extra step) but might not be too bad of an idea

HP restores are probably the harddisk image with all preloaded drivers and software in place.

Best bet is to go onto the HP website, find your model and see if they have drivers available for win7 before you upgrade. I'd download them all to a usb disk beforehand, that way it's quicker later on. (this is the procedure I'm about to attempt with our Compaq/HP laptop here)

Just FYI, I'm done. My laptop has Win7 Ultimate running on it in evaluation mode. Seems noticeably faster than it was with Vista.

Everything was working as far as I can tell, but I installed the HP drivers anyways. Just a couple more items and it's totally finished.

Just installed some of the last remaining bits of software from HP's website, and the webcam software made me discover what Benner used to look like before he discovered the hair gel!

I'm afraid I'll have to ask Sue about that as she's likely the most recent user!

I've done it on 4 comps now. I always do a clean install after a disk format. It's the best way. I've done it on my Vista lappy, my old useless Linux box, my Mom's XP system (my old gaming rig), and a friends Vista gaming rig. It was very fast and painless every time. Just make sure you have everything backed up, format, install. let it do it's thousand updates, then make sure you don't have to update/reinstall any drivers (honestly 7 takes care of most of that its self). And it's def. worth it. Fixes most of Vistas remaining issues and pushes people to finally give up that antiquated mess called XP (sacrilege I know, but I frakin' hate XP with a passion- move the Hell on people)
