Hey, Shark, or anyone else who has 2 cents to put in - I have a question regarding the BYRD line ... are they of a lesser quality or comparable to Spyderco? I'm asking because only recently have I gotten into "regular" knives and these two brands look soooo similar. So ... is BYRD a daughter company or what? Also, here, the BYRD knives are cheaper and way more affordable... so ... what's the difference? Are the Spydies necessarily better than the BYRDS just for being Spyderco? :D

Thanks :tu:

Yes, Byrd is Spyderco's sister company. Yes they are of lesser quality. The Byrd knives are less expensive and for good reason in my opinion. The quality and feel just isn't their on the Byrd's in my opinion. I tried to like them and owned 3 or 4 different models, but I just really do not like the Byrd knives at all. YMMV.

I personally cannot see a difference in quality between the Byrd and the Tenacious/Ambitious family.
Comparing G10 versions of course.
The Byrd FRN ones fall short when compared to the Japanese Seki City FRN models.

If you only have a budget Spyderco then Byrd will be a great addition.

Until you get your first Taichung  ;)

Can't say really anything about the Byrd line, but the Tenacious line is really a good bang for the buck. roughly 6 years of rough and dumbass use and it's ticking like a Swiss watch

Oookay, thanks, guys! You were very helpful :salute: So, yeah, since I've only had the Ambitious so far and as ... the price of the dollar keeps rising, I'll hardly be willing to buy another one of the better models. So... the BYRDs may be a good idea for something in between - to get an idea of the larger Spydercos and still not overspend :D

I get what you are saying, but I would personally just save the money you would spend on the Byrd and put it towards a higher end Spyderco. Just my opinion though.

I've had this Byrd Medowlark for a little while now and the quality and feel of it is very good .
The FRN or what ever they are made from handled knives as someone said above don't seem to have the feel or quality of Spyderco but this Stainless steel one does . I handled a few different ones in the shop and this all metal one was way ahead of the others .
This one doesn't get carried much any more but travels in the truck and is a backup for my Delica and is the knife I loan to people on occasions at work .
I would buy another one if the need arises , it is a great budget knife .

Made a new scale for my Chokwe.  It's a great knife, but wasn't liking the stock G-10 scale that much.

A few things make a Spyderco,  design and ergonomic elements, quality of components and quality of manufacture.
I would really suggest a Byrd Meadowlark 2 G10 as it gives serious Spyderco design elements, with great manufacturing but does so with 8cr13mov steel.
Many classic Spyderco knives are back lock with great finger rests and choils, this follows these design elements with good build and some Byrd style changes.

Then get a PM2 and be spoilt for the rest of your life.

G10 over skeletonised stainless liners, flat ground blade with good jimping on thumb rest and choil.
Steel shapenens well and is easily maintained, clip might as well come off a Spyderco.
Has a good weight that balances it in the hand and makes it feel solid and more expensive than it is.

Yeah, I already want a BYRD like the one that @harronek showed

Also, Don't know what all the hype about the G10 is.... I didn't know what to expect again, but... it just feels like cheap plastic :X  :sorry:

I think NNR should get a Balisong next. And learn how to open it all the cool ways.
Now that I thinks about that, maybe not.

Anyway, it's still stiff, the thing. I manage to open it in a "cool" way with my thumb like four out of six times (what a ratio) which annoys me :D I don't get WHY it's so stiff while people in vids seem to do it really easy.

As for the other cool ways... I guess there's the same problem. Though the so called "spydie drop" is the easiest because of the gravitation, I guess, but a bit pointless in my opinion, just "cool".
