Picked up this well used 84mm.  I'm a sucker for the bale.  Any idea about what date this is?

Me too - And the old awl too - Awesome - (or is that Awlsome  ;) ) ...... Just love all the old SAKS.

I would say this one is between '57 (VOS tang stamp) and '61 new awl. Certainly post '51 when the current can opener made it's debut.

Ah just thought of something - No exposed rivets - Which would put it after 1960 - So I think we can say this knife was made sometime in 1961. Old awl but no visible rivets.
As we believe both those changes happened that year - But not at the same time - As there are quite a few knives around like this

Shows a lot of vintage features in your photos: fluted corkscrew, v1 gray magnifier (with longer Phillips), scissors screw, and keyring on the pen blade spacer in the blade layer (it's now part of the opener layer spring). Does it have have the 90 degree stop on the bottle opener? (I'd bet it doesn't.)

Nice find with The Nature Company scales! The store chain was bought by The Discovery Channel in 1996. By 2001 all the stores were closed or converted to Discovery Channel stores. My guess would be late 1970's to mid-1980's era for the knife. The fluted corkscrew ended circa early 1990's, and the scissors screw was replaced by a rivet in 1991 when the multi-purpose hook also appeared on the back layer under it.

The 90 degree stop on the bottle opener was implemented in 1985, so if yours has the stop, it's post-1984. Other features will provide the other end of the year range during which it would have been made. I remember The Nature Company and their stores. They were a really cool place to wander through as they had many interesting products you didn't see anywhere else. IMHO, after Discovery Channel bought them in 1996 and started closing or converting them to Discovery Channel stores (during 1996-2001), they were never quite the same.

The Tinker with solid Copper Plus scales. Had to let some adhesive set on them while they were clamped onto the liners and didn't think to post a photo. Wasn't a "new" Tinker, but one left over from a batch I'd accumulated to harvest their Phillips drivers. I used the most thoroughly thrashed ones and kept the rest which were in excellent condition. Blade on this one has a scratch that will be easily polished out. As one might imaging, these scales make it heavy! They should develop a patina over time.

These and the Titanium I put on the Explorer Plus are something completely different! They completely change the feel and character of the knife with their heft. If I ever got a SwissChamp I'd probably move them to it, but I'm not planning on one into the foreseeable future.

From looking at sakhome.com, the most significant thing is the awl, which makes it pre-1961. The other markings and features are consistent with that and continued after the awl was redesigned. For example, the patent marking on the can opener continued until circa 1971. You can see a number of things on sakhome.com to help date a knife. Start with this page on his site as there's more detailed information there than in the SAKWiki (I use both to try to get a year range):

http://www.sakhome.com/305357099

See also sakhome.com's Victorinox Evolution page; down the left side menu in that section are details about the can opener, cap lifter, awl, etc.

Red Alox Wenger Watch Opener, found somewhere that had this as brand new old stock! No branding either, unlike many of these models:

The inside of the bottle/cap lifter is sharpened if thats what you are referring to?  Pretty smart design I think still makes sense today.  Not sure why they stopped doing it.

I'd bet dollars to donuts it is, but cannot find any date range for when the bottle opener contained the "wire scraper" feature. The bail places it before the mid-1960's and the awl pre-1961 which sets an upper end. The question then for dating it is when various features were introduced to set the lower end of its age.

The bottle opener contained the wire stripper between 1951 and the early '80s
See the SAAMS blog - which contains some really useful tool dating images.
Links to this blog (and to the Vic info sheet from Urs Wyss, from where I think sakhome.com got a lot of his information) are in the 'Tools' section of SAKWIKI - at the bottom of the page.

An exact date for Aloha's SAK has already been suggested in this post above...
.......... No exposed rivets - Which would put it after 1960 - So I think we can say this knife was made sometime in 1961. Old awl but no visible rivets.

This thread on MTo:  ..... Something to help you date your Vic SAKS... is also pretty useful for dating your SAKs!!   ;)  :o  :)

I looked at sakhome.com - There is a lot of good information there - But almost too much to assimilate  >:(
- The table in the thread above is much better for dating !!  :tu:
