Someone's going to be happy when he gets back from holiday...

(Image removed from quote.)

Background one is mine, foreground is a commissioned job.  I'll leave it up to the owner to-be to say who if they want to.

Applied lessons learned on #1 to the new build and a lot more care and attention to detail.
Just because I don't mind a bit of "hand built character" doesn't mean everybody does.
I'm pretty happy with #2, as (hopefully) will be the owner.

(Image removed from quote.)

Both the same size (84mm)  just a trick of perspective that makes right one look bigger.

Want to make some $$ Peter?

Seeing that just makes me want it even more on mine!¡!

I have been slowly catching the Victorinox bug myself. It started a year ago with several really worn old Alox models. I played around with a bunch of medium to large folders but just did not feel comfortable with that type of knife. So, a bunch of them went off to ebay and financed a much more refined looking One Handed Sentinel with no serrations. If it handles as I hope it does I'd like to add a One Hand Trekker too in my EDC bag.

For daily carry I have been debating between a few models. On the lighter side I am thinking a Hiker or Camper as a small saw would be handy for my woods walks just can't decide between the corkscrew or the Phillips. For a bit heavier (bulkier?) EDC pocket carry maybe a Climber or an Explorer (love the magnifier). Of course whichever two I choose need to be in black.

Ideally the Hiker and Camper could both be left behind if I could find a black Alox Farmer.

Tony
The Magnifier is great, I recommend an Explorer if you didn't need the saw, you might have to look at the Champion Plus Amazon often has it on sale for less than an Explorer.  A great knife to have around.

As for the Black Farmer I think these are still relatively easy to find right now, they've made several batches for Europe so you can find them on ebay.  They set you back a little more than the others, but I've seen some on ebay for $50US and less.  I've sold a few there myself in the past when they were less common for $65 or so.

There's an Italian ebay seller that has the black farmer in stock. It will not show up in the usual ebay search but I can search my bookmarks if you want one.

I got a DAK today, as a dutchie I quite like it   :sak: it's a victorinox version. Needed some lube but it's really smooth otherwise, great condition.

I went ahead and got the Camper off of eBay as it has the features I want and is not too bulky. A Climber might be a better choicve than the Explorer as each layer of tools just makes it harder to carry.

I carried my late Uncle's Deluxe Tinker and it just has too much bulk to really feel comfortable. I'm thinking 3 layers is all I want now.

I will take a look at the Alox Farmer (thanks for the ebay Italy link) and may give that a go.

BTW, not sure my late Uncle's Deluxe Tinker is really that model. It has every front tool/blade as the deluxe but on the back only has the Phillips and the reamer....no hook. Is this just an older model Deluxe Tinker or something different?  I have had it 15 years, he had it many years before that.

Thanks,
Tony

LNF Champion.

Nice. Is that a custom mod?

Yes a mod/repair. The old style awl came from a 4 layer knife with a bail and no exposed rivets. When I took it apart, it was factory made. I didn't think the old style awl came with out the exposed rivets though.

That's correct.  The Hook was not added to SwissArmy Knives until relatively recently in SAK years.

My latest is hiding in the middle of this lot.

Even throwing the others away it was still a reasonable (not great) buy, but if I can average $4 each for them back on eBay I will have myself a red Elinox Soldier for free.

Should be able to manage that, nice "pro" looking photos and words like "Vintage" and "Authentic".
I might even keep one or two.

Large awl + no rivets is a standard model, made from about 1957 to 1962/3. Victorinox doesn't list this as one of their models in the "evolution", but that's an oversight on their part. Some people think this is a one year only style (1962), but that's wrong too. They made knives like these for several years - I have about 30 or so of various models. They even made a catalog for them: http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-browse_gallery.php?galleryId=73

My $0.02 - If you don't already, I urge you to mark these mods you make so that collectors can tell them from originals. These late 1950s Champions can go for a lot of money these days, and I'd hate to see someone pay good money for what they think is an original knife and it ends up being a mod. Not that I think you personally would do that, mind you - what happens is knives like this gets traded and traded again, somehow their pedigree gets lost and they end up on eBay as originals. I can tell by looking at this that it's not original, but most collectors aren't gigantic SAK dorks like me that have memorized the minutia of tool changes, etc. On all my mods I make I stamp a serial number under the corkscrew so it's so you can tell it from an original.

I could be wrong, but I think you may have scored a late 1950s large awl Pioneer here - the kind with the scale cutout on the back. If so, that makes this an even better score.

Got a nice drop off from the mailman today. I recently sold a few knives from my colelction that never get used as they are just too big and unweildy. I already had a few older SAK models and just like how easy they carry and are plenty big for my EDC tasks,

So, with the proceeds from my recent ebay sales I picked up a nice used Climber w/black scales, a new One Handed Sentinel (non-serrated) and from Amazon a new SwissTool Spirit X with the leather case for $53 and free shipping. All great looking tools with a finish and attention to detail that is nicer than my old Spydercos, Gerbers and Sogs that I just sold.

The SwissTool Spirit is like the BMW of multi-tools. My Leathermans are all very industrial looking but the Spirit is just plain elegant and I really like that the tools are all outside accessable.

Still want a Vic Compact and I have a used Hiker on the way (wanted the saw). The One Handed Sentinel is nice and I kind of wanted a Trekker too but I need to live the the Sentinel a while to see if the size is an issue for pocket carry. While the Sentinel has a pocket clip model it seems the Trekker does not.

Anyway, thrilled with the new Vics!

Tony
