She's had more blood taken and given an injection.  She's worn out now and snoring next to me. It's just a waiting game now. In the mean time she's on antibiotics just in case it's an infection or bug.
She gave me an evil look when the thermometer went in at the vets. I had to chuckle.

It's so difficult not being able to tell them what's going on when they're suffering isn't it?

She looks like a sweet heart. All the best Kev and fingers crossed for good news.  :tu:

Did the vet say how bad the damage to her toenail was?  My old dog Pete would routinely shatter them, but it never bothered him- dogo argentinos are indestructable.  We usually only noticed when there were bloody footprints all over the house.

She pulled the nail out completely. She loves to chase balls and when she overshoots, she puts the brakes on pretty hard and I think this is how it happened. There was a lot of blood, but that's usual for lurchers, and she was definitely letting us know she was in pain, which is also a lurcher trait (the Lurcher SCREAM OF DEATH as it's known). She has developed a pronounced comedy limp, but when we take her for a limp outside she grabs her tennis ball, so she's not too badly off!

Thanks Kevin - She was made up last night because my daughter brought the dog bed into her bedroom for the night - she likes that.

Pete used to have that problem too- he was bad for trying to stop from full speed.  He smashed a lot of toenails, ripped a lot of pads and got a lot of grass stains when he flipped and rolled as a result.  Of course, dogos are not the kinds of dogs to ever show pain- Pete was once run over by a car, got back on his feet and kept running.   :ahhh

I saw a rotty do that once outside a scrap yard. It ran out the gate, hit full on by a car and barrelled down the road, picked itself up and carried on going after whatever it ran out the gate to chase. I was a bit awestruck at how it just kept on going. When the scrapyard man called it, it just trotted back as though nothing had happened.

I pity the person who ever tried to steal from that yard

Tough dogs scare the crap out of me- my Daisy is part rottweiler and I always worry that she is getting hurt seriously, but not enough that she would acknowledge it.  Pete was the same way.  He got knifed in the face (long story), got run over by a car, fell down the stairs more times than I can recall, fell off a cliff and seemed only vaguely aware of any of it.

Gosh I sound like a horrible dog owner...   :ahhh

The vet has called me about 30 mins ago, it's definitely cancer. So she's back in at 5pm tomorrow night for another blood test to see if her anaemia is getting worse and plan the way forward with scans, etc.

Just to add to it all, my Dad called shortly before the vet and told me my Grandad passed away this morning just after 7am.

I'm sorry to hear that man.  I truly am.

Pete died from liver cancer.  He was a strong dog and it ate away at him for months.  It was the hardest thing I've ever dealt with and I don't ever wish it on anyone.

And I'm sorry to hear about your grandad.  That is horrible news.

Hang in there man- you need to be strong for tour family.  We'll be strong for you.

I almost didn't open up this thread.I am still mourning the loss of my beloved Muttley who left us after nearly 18 years.A certifiable "mutt" she charmed us from the time she was 6 weeks old when you could hold her in the palm of your hand. She never got to be more than 12 or 13 lbs.but size definitely did not matter in her case.
She was the Alpha Dog in the family that played host to a Black Lab/Newfoundland mix of about 140 lbs that we lost to heartworm way too young and my buddy Duke Von Slayer;a 155 lb.Rottweiler who succumbed to bone cancer after surviving heartworm.
Our son moved in with us after suffering a near fatal accident and brought with him his Jack Russell Terrier who was the only dog Muttley got along with. They were inseperable and I think Buddy still looks for her out in the yard. It has been nearly 4 years since we lost her and I still can't commit to another dog.
John(our son)will be leaving us shortly to move to another state and Buddy will go along with him so I guess it is about time to start looking.Having had a dog around me since I was six(I'm a LOT older now)it is difficult to be without one.
Here are a couple of pix of Duke and Muttley with my bride and one of Buddy. For some reason I can't find one of Brutus(the Lab/Newfie mix).

Bonnie's doing well thanks Kevin - she's hobbling around milking it for all it's worth. She's well used to the cone of shame  - she's a nibbler - a habit picked up at the dogs home before we adopted her, and she'll nibble away at her paws til they bleed, so she wears the COS in bed while we work on weaning her off the nibbling.

Thankyou  :tu:

Just got back from the vet's.  Millie is having a good day today, she's perky and hopped out the car which surprised me.  Her results show no improvement but also no worse. She's back in on Tuesday morning at 8.45am for x-rays and a scan to see if we can find which cancer it is. The vet agrees she's to old for surgery but a steroid treatment would give her quality of life for a while once he's sure what it is. But the hard decision isn't very far away he warned me today.  I'm hoping it's as far away as possible, but I can't let her suffer.

My grandads funeral is on the 25th.
