My brother and family are on vacation for 10 days so Rosie's cousin Misty is staying with us.

Misty's on the left.

Morning update...

Millie was out of bed tail wagging waiting for me to open the door this morning.  I can't believe how much she's improved this week.  She enjoyed her tablets hidden in cream cheese wrapped in ham, and so did Milo my Yorkie (but without the tablets).

Now she's guarding the kitchen door smelling the air waiting for her chicken and rice to cool down, and doing a grumble every so often because it's not fast though for her liking.  :D

She hasn't wanted to go for a walk this week, but I think today I'll take her to her favourite park and see if she wants a little walk. If not we'll sit in the shade of a tree and chill for a while and watch the world go by.

Well Rosie's three month run of no seizures ended this morning. I had just taken her and Misty (my brothers dog) for a walk and she had one not ten feet from our house. This is the first time she's ever had one outside. Good news is it was a relatively mild one that only lasted about a minute and a half. She bounced back fairly quickly and we went about going for our walk.

Thanks Kevin, no known cause. She started having them three years ago.  They call it idiopathic epilepsy and are not sure what causes them. She's been doing pretty good since we upped her meds but they'll never go away completely. Before I put her on meds at her worst she had a cluster of seven in 24 hours.

Bonnie in her default position just before going to the vets to have her bandage removed - her paw is healing nicely. She is still milking it and had me up at 04.30 this morning to take her out for a 'comfort break'.

I rang the pet crematorium today that was recommended to me by a friend who recently lost his boxer. His was an old dog that didn't recover from being bitten by a horse in the middle of her back. The horse is his as well and had never shown aggression until that point and hasn't since.

Millie wasn't good at all this morning and she has her scans tomorrow so I want to be prepared just in case.

Kevin, I'll be thinking about you and I'll be hoping for the best for Millie.  :salute:

Rosie ended up having another seizure last night which isn't unusual. They can come in clusters in a 24 hour period. She has been fine this morning so I think we are past it, I hope. I didn't sleep that well last night, waking at any sound but she made it through the night without incident.

Thank you all for your support and kind words, it is very much appreciated.

I'm sorry to say that I lost Millie tonight.

She had a massive fit and had to be rushed to the vet's.  He couldn't get her to recover at all and she was suffering. I had to make the decision so she didn't suffer and send her on her way.

The vet was great, and they will sort the cremation with the same place I spoke to earlier. I will be able to pick her ashes up in a few days. The plan is to spread them at her 3 favourite walking spots.

R.I.P Millie

I'm so sorry Kevin -  It sounds like you made the most of your last few days with her. Our animals are a huge part of our lives and I know you'll really miss her. We are so lucky to be a part of their lives.

I'm so sorry Kevin. :( That's always a tough call. My first dog has Lyme disease and it caused her to have siezures. On the meds for it, she was a zombie, walking into walls, etc. It broke my heart when she had her last siezure, and I cried like a baby when we put her down, even though I knew it was the right call.

Three weeks later, "Hey mom! Look what I got!" ;) and my Cisco came into our lives and stayed for 13 years......

I'm sorry to hear that man.  I really am.  It is a road I am all to familiar with, having been down it myself several times.  It's also one I will go down again, although I am hoping it won't be any time soon.

You are lucky that the decision was made for you, although I know it doesn't feel like that.  When Pete died it was after a long, drawn out battle with cancer and I watched it eat away at him for months.  It was brutal, but he greeted every day with his usual excitement, even when he could no longer stand or walk.  In the end he passed away lying in the sun on the way to the vet office.  To this day I still wonder if I should have done it sooner, so he didn't have to go on his own- was he suffering and I missed it?  Those thoughts will plague me until the end of my days.

With Chinook it was different.  I came home for lunch and found him lying on the floor hyperventilating.  I scooped him up, took him to the vet, and after trying one or two quick treatments it was apparent nothing else could be done.  That morning he'd been out in the yard, playing with the neighbor's dogs.  There were no decisions to make- it was the only thing that could be done, and while I wasn't ready for it, it was a blessing, and I beat myself up a lot less for it than I did with Pete, even though Chinook was every bit as much a part of me as Pete was.

I warn you though- as hard as today was, it's the next few days that will be much worse, as you step over a dog that isn't there, or expect a little face there when you sneak a food scrap under the table, or you step on a favorite toy, or plan to go out for a walk and there's no one there to go with you.  And in a week when you find a tuft of fur when you move a chair.

It's all enough to reduce a grown man to a blubbering mass- at least it always has been in my case.

You have to be strong for your family- and we will be strong for you.  So many of us have been where you are, and understand it all too intimately.  We are here for you.  If you want, you can always send me a PM if there's something you need to say but don't want to say it openly.  My door is always open.

The only thing I can say that might be of any help, is the one thing I always stick to in times like this- things may never be the same, but they can, in time, be ok again.
