Anybody else EDC a traditional slipjoint?
on: June 09, 2012, 01:25:00 AM
Over the past couple of months, I've found myself carrying a traditional slipjoint more and more.  There are a couple of reasons for this - if I'm at work and need to cut something with customers around, they are more sheeple friendly than, say, my Kershaw Leek.  Another reason is that slipjoints are, well, cool.  They're old school, and still do their jobs just as well today as back in my great-grandfather's time.  Honestly a slippie is all I really need for most of my day-to-day cutting chores.  Here are some of my favorites:

At left is a Buck 301, which is a recent addition to my collection.  Great knife, takes and keeps a fantastic edge.  In the middle is an old Ka-Bar Barlow.  I like the Barlow pattern.  My father has carried an old Schrade Barlow since before I was born.  My first real pocketknife was a Barlow.  On the right are two CV Cases - a Mini Trapper and a small Texas Jack.  I think CV is great, takes a great edge, and over time a nice patina.  The clip blade on the Trapper has a bit of patina going, I decided not to force one on either of these two.  Anyone else regularly carry a slipjoint?  Let's see some pics!
There's no such thing as "Too pretty to carry".  There's only "Too pretty NOT to carry"...... >:D

You know I'm actually a bit embarrassed I don't carry one more  :-\ I do have my favourites, but all my nice traditional slippies seem to have been nosed out by SAK's or by more modern slippies.

I was actually thinking about this earlier this evening, and once I get my SOG PPPP mod converted to knifeless, and my REBAR converted to knifeless, I'm hoping to spend more time with a slippie in my pocket again.

There's something so timeless and reliable about a nice traditional pocket knife

I don't even own one, but your pic of those really makes me want to grab one next.   :tu:  Are there any tradional looking slippies with stainless blades?  I tend to be a rust magnet with blades.

I EDC a slippie every day at work as a dedicated boxbasher.FFavourites inclued Taylors Eye Whitness warncliff from Neils giveaway,SanReMu HO2(curse you Al),CRKT Edgie,Byrd Tern, and Spydie UKPK Rescue.

I've had a go at different Rough Riders, and my Buck Stockman, but the singlebladed knives work out best for me

I do like single bladed slippies, and a couple of Sheffield made ones are my favourite. I do have a few Barlow style I like to carry too though, and a Case Seahorse Whittler. Congress and Stockman styles leave me cold these days though

John, you really need to try a Byrd Wings Slipit next mate  :pok: >:D
I'm pretty sure you'll like it  ;)

Geez, Al, I figured you'd be one of the first to answer yes.  :P  :)

Are there any tradional looking slippies with stainless blades?  I tend to be a rust magnet with blades.

Oh, sure there are.  The Buck in that pic is 420HC Stainless.  I think the Barlow is stainless too but I'm not 100% sure.  All of these Cases are though:

Red bone Mini trapper, red Barnboard bone Humpback Stockman, and a red bone Medium Stockman, all in Case's Tru-Sharp stainless steel.  I've read of people disliking Tru-Sharp, but I've never had an issue with it, not being a steel snob.
@Kirk - I forgot the Taylors Eye Witness.  I got one from Neil too, and it is a tough, hard working blade.  :tu:

:hatsoff: Always willing to help out.  :D  I got my 301 last week, and I love it.  The sheepsfoot blade is a perfect box buster.  The clip and spey also have been put to good use.  It's a nice, hand-filling knife without being too bulky.  Another neat point about traditionals that I've found is that when using them around people, others have a tendency to show you their own pocket knife.  That's actually how I got my Slimline Trapper from a customer.  A while ago he saw me using my Barlow, and pulled out his old Sodbuster.  All the time, he's asking me what I'm carrying that day, I tend to mix it up a bit.  :tu:

Almost always have one in front left pocket. Usually a Case of some sort and here lately I have added a few GEC and Bucks to the lineup.

Some pretty knives being posted guys.  :tu:  Today I was at a picnic and had my new Slimline Trapper in my pocket.  It saw plenty of use on small cutting jobs throughout the day and still can shave.  I think I'm in love.....

I do wonder how good are scissors on those slippies (Buck, Case...)

I have a Case pen knife that has scissors.  It doesn't see any pocket time, partly because it's tiny and I'm afraid I'd lose it, and it's also the only knife in my collection with stag handles.  The scissors work fine for cutting paper, but don't work well on fingernails and such.

Thanks Rex. I have got another in rosewood, still tucked away in it's presentation box with a pocket steel. The Wostenholm clip blades are a little soft on the backspring compared to Rodgers (their sister company in the same facility) for some reason, but otherwise they're not bad little knives and hold a reasonable edge

I've been tempted by those little case knives a few times myself. Thanks for the feedback on the scissors Tom. Sounds like I should stick with my Barlows and Seahorses  :)
