Early PST - are these worth US$600
on: March 14, 2013, 05:09:22 PM
These 4 early PST are being sold by Texastoolcrafters for US$600
Please can I have your opinions as to whether they are worth the money
Below is how they described each of the 4 tools

Leatherman PST Collectors Set, Rare Early Models, Wood Presentation Box
Condition/Remarks
This is a hand-picked set of the rarest and oldest PST tools we've come across. From left to right:
 1. An early riveted model, made in Japan. This tool has hollow rivets and "Pocket Survival Tool" text that is extremely rare for the Japan models. The blade tang stamp is "Leatherman, Japan". It is good used condition.
2. An "original" USA made PST model. This is the earliest variation we've seen. It has ground star screws, "Pocket Survival Tool" text, and no tang stamp on the blade. It also does not have the lanyard attachment that is included on all subsequent PST models. The blade has the original edge and all of the interior functions show minimal use, but the plier tips are slightly misaligned.
3. A classic made in Japan version tool. It has the block style pliers, rivets, and large "Leatherman" text on the handles. The blade tang stamp is "Leatherman, Japan". There are some scratches/scuffs to the exterior, but all of the functions are minimally used.
4. This tool is similar to #3, but the tang stamp reads "Leatherman". It is in the best condition of the tools in the collection - there are some scratches/scuffs to the exterior, but all of the functions are minimally used.

Nope, if you're patient (we might be talking years here), you can get your hands on them for far less than that.. :)

No they are not worth $640. You should be able to get those 4 pieces for well under $200. That seller has some very outrageous prices.
What? Enablers! Are you serrrrious? Where? I dont see any.

They are worth exactly what someone is willing to pay for them. For instance, a 200 carot flawless pink diamond is worth about $5 to me. Some may be willing to pay a good deal more.

I don't think you'll find many people on these boards that are willing to pay that amount though. But then, some of what draws folks here is that fun search for rare tools. What the seller is doing is taking away all that time/effort of searching, and just handing over 4 fairly rare models. Someone might think that's worth saving the time in searching.

I've seen some very nice Vics priced insanely and passed on them recently.  Although I wouldn't pay the asking on those PST's, I'm all for making profit on these "collectibles"  :tu:

I think Dan has always been willing to go a bit higher on things than most other people here, so if he says they are too expensive.... well.... there's your answer!
