Spears.
on: May 11, 2013, 08:22:49 PM
Some of you know that i collect swords and a few other historical pieces. Well one day, I was cruising eBay and came across some spears. I thought to myself...I don't have any of those. So off I go and order two types, both from Cold Steel. Well I didn't read the fine print as I was bowled over when I got them to my door. You see, the Boar Spear is a freaking huge thing. The shaft is about 2 inches in diameter. The spear is well over 6 feet. The blade is the scariest thing I have ever seen. Thankfully, this brute comes with a sheath. In fact, both spears do. The other spear is a Light Samburu Spear, designed for throwing. This one is 6 feet long though...and they made a longer one at that.

Well these things came to my door about 2 months ago and I simply found a corner for them. However, I kept tripping in them on occasion. Today, I found a solution. I wall mounted them.

So no more tripping in them evermore. I still can't get over the size of that boar spear. I guess it would have to be big to get up the courage to spear a wild boar somewhere in the forest.  :o

Dan, I'm curious, do the spears come in multiple pieces, or is it a six-foot-long-single-piece-of-whoopass/cool wall hanger?

You are starting another nice collection. There are famous spears and javelins to gather (if anyone makes them). You should have a Roman Pilum. And a Macedonian Sarissa (you need a long corridor to mount it, it is 6m long). And a Greek Hoplite spear of course. The Zulu spear (iKwla) is always mounted with the cow-skin shield and the Iwisa. In between you have pikes, lances, halberds etc.
If knives are the archetype tool, spears are the archetype weapon. Bayonets on rifles are their residual descendants. But one needs o BIG house to keep even a modest collection.

That's the first spear I thought of when I saw this thread earlier.  Something about a weapon that's named for the sound it makes when it's pulled from the body of an enemy.... :ahhh

The Samburu spear comes in 3 pieces. The boar spear comes in two pieces. These aren't really wall hangers. They are real items. Both came very sharp out of the box. Watch the usual Cold Steel video below. Oh and I would never get that close to a lion personally.  :ahhh :o  :ahhh  :o

I do not plan on collecting spears. I just wanted a few for decoration...can you tell I am not married.

I would also like to add that I have these still...and I haven't gotten around to finding suitable shafts for them.

I thought so at first as well...but the thought of anything that sharp overhead and possibly falling negated that notion right quick.

That means the cowhide shield that goes along with your iKwla would be all black.... :pok:  ;)

Ah, but what kind of helmet? A Greek Corinthian helmet?  The Roman galea?  A Brodie tin hat?   :D  That's a whole other collection in itself!

Every time I see the helmet on right, I thought someone must have got hold of some spare corrugated drain pipe.

I bet your mailman was somewhat perplexed when a six foot long spear shaped package showed up on his truck!
