You want a wearable Leatherman multitool?

What time is it? That's right it's wave o'clock!  Very affordable and has all the functions of the original wave!

Yes, but yours has to come with a health warning:  "May cause a rash for people with latex allergies"

The stainless version is an expensive piece of tear my wool sleeves to hell, but the black version - oh my! - a beautiful piece of man jewelry and a great conversation starter. (maybe short conversations, but conversation nevertheless  :D )
I'll get one in next year sales.

Or maybe I'll get one of these instead

I wonder of the spikes can be replaced with philips heads and hex bits?

That is simply perfect; well played.     But...do we have a B.O. version?  And - how much does that cost?  Are you offering customization builds??

Not sure how the Leatherman Tread would go with the chainmaille wristband I got last month from Wolf's Den Armoury. (Stainless Steel w/ accents of Copper Telegraph Wire). Unless the Tread came with a universal watch attachment... though the Tread would no doubt out-weigh the chainmaille wristband by far.

Has anyone found a weight on the Tread yet? Guessing about 6 to 8 ounces.

I hear Leatherman has hired Mr. T. to promote the neckace version...

I have held off posting the pics in public so as not to invite any possible negative feedback based on an incomplete picture.

Also, I have tiny wrists so I might have to leave half the tool components at home, especially if I get the watch.

It is half baked, no doubt. And the price is crazy. But it has possibilities as a concept.

People thought Tim was whackadoo with the PST prototype. So I will give them points for thinking outside the box. Sometimes a step in an innovative direction looks crazy at first glance.

I will withhold judgement until I handle one. I hated the Wingman concept until I handled one. Then it seemed like a good idea after all.

Is it ugly?  Eh.. arguable. I probably wouldn't wear one myself today. If this had come out in the early 90s though.. I totally would have wanted one. The bracelet would have looked good with my Doc Martins and leather jacket at a Ministry show.

I find it absolutely ridiculous, but you gotta give them credit for managing to turn up in almost all gadget blogs like uncrate, gearhungry, awesomer and so on. Maybe we should look at it more like a super sportscar - expensive, impratical but nice to look at, gives you press and reminds people of your more practical and budget friendly multitools.

This is somewhat odd-- I'm not interested in this tool, but 2 people here at work have come up to me and asked where and when it will be available-- people who aren't multitool enthusiasts at all. It looks like this thing is getting mainstream attention and interest. The pictures are being forwarded around the office here and all I'm hearing so far is positive, at least in terms of wearing it as a fashion accessory. It really seems to tick the right boxes for semi-functional jewelry. I've heard three or four people saying they want it and other that they want to give it a spouse. Even after telling one person why I didn't feel a need for it, he mentioned how cool it was and that seemed to be the only justification needed.

Weird. This seems like it could be a bit of a mainstream hit, here.

ETA-- that might be the disconnect I'm experiencing. I see it as a marginally usable tool, everyone else I've spoken to sees it as jewelry with a bit of a masculine flair. One of the guys who said he wanted one didn't even see how it would be used, he just liked the look.

I can see it as a sort of modern steampunk thing, but that's about it.

It does amuse me that they're suggesting using a Gerber product to change the links. "You could even use a Dime" - I actually think I'd prefer a Dime to this, and I hate Dimes.

Considering they are apparently NEVER going to update the wave/charge or any other currently made tool again, I give them thumbs up for trying something new. the price however is insane.  At least they are demonstrating that someone within the company is willing to try a new idea though.

What with the Signal, Tread and all those half baked one-piece-tools that LM has launched recently - I can't help but wonder if LM really are trying to get more involved in the Gadget market??

Why???

I'm pretty certain that the vast majority of Signals will be purchased by the " I'll-go-camping-only-if-it's-sunny " ....."but first I need to polish the car!!" Brigade, in other words merely a toy...a gadget, the Tread is for the guy who wants to "try" to portray an image - lol and the OPT for the mall ninjas!

Its crossed my mind that LMs 25yr warranty maybe beginning to bite. All those old ST's, PST's, Cores, Waves, Surges, Micra's etc etc  that were bought new, then used, abused, then add to that lot all those that have come straight off eBay, from yard sales, pawn shops, charity shops etc etc, all dirt cheap because they're basically knackered and will of course be sent back to LM for warranty work (read - free replacement). It must all be costing LM an absolute fortune honouring their 25yr guarantee, especially since more and more forums constantly advise everyone to "send it back" the minute their shiny new multitool loses its like new feel.

Moving more into the gadget market would cut the (I expect astronomical) high costs of future warranty work as most will never require warranty....just a slight dusting occasionally should suffice!!

Just my thoughts.

Because money. You can always use more than one gadget at once, and people like to buy multiple of those. But if you buy a multitool you are basically set for live. Thats why theres no new Wave coming - the people buying it right now just don't care for the new functions.

Look at the amazon germany most sold in the category multitools: http://goo.gl/h5xMoy The amount of tools being sold is just gigantic. People love the Leatherman - but most won't immediately buy another full size tool.

But small gadgets, like pry bars and so one, are cheap and supplemental that people that already got to experience the Leatherman brand will buy another one or two. Even in the marketing video you see that its clearly aimed at people that love a their multitool but can't and don't want to carry it everyhwere.

It must all be costing LM an absolute fortune honouring their 25yr guarantee, especially since more and more forums constantly advise everyone to "send it back" the minute their shiny new multitool loses its like new feel.

Not at all. The furniture giant IKEA just announced their "no questions asked return it anytime in any condition and you get youre money back guarantee". It is much much cheaper to produce and the costs per return are much less then what it would cost to select and deny replacements. Simply replace everything and in the long run you save money. And its great marketing too. Look at Zippo-Lighters, they are doing the same. Its just simple economics. The price of a off the shelf wave includes an estimated 10% return rate.

It works the same with shoes or clothing too. Over 40% of the shoes bought online in Germany are returned to the merchant (because they don't fit, etc.) and that free of charge. Of those 40% around 70% are destroyed because they are in a condition where they cant be resold. That is all simply factured into the retail cost of the shoe upfront.

You know, I am thinking I am linking Leatherman all the more for their sense of adventurism these days. I liked Gerber for the same thing in the past, and now they appear to be playing it safe these days. So :hatsoff: to Leatherman for trying out new things.

+1 on all accounts with two huge reservations. PRICE and QUALITY
As long as they make quality tools at reasonable price I'm good.
