Sea water corrosion resistant knife for a swimmer.
on: August 05, 2016, 09:52:02 PM
Hi guys. I usually swim in the sea for about an hour a day. So I was thinking of carrying a small blade. I might need it in case I get entangled in a fishing line, or whatever strange situation might occur that requires a small blade.
I own a Spyderco serrated hawkbill H1 Ladybug. Would that be good enough, if I clean it with fresh water and dry it immediately after swimming? Is the locking mechanism salt water resistant?
Or should I get something else? Folder or small fixed blade, I don't mind, plain or serrated. A gut hook to cut lines would be nice.

Γεια σου πατριώτη!

I swam with the Bahco and after a couple of years there's no rust on it. My Ladybug got small spots of rust after I played with it on the seashore. But it is plain, not H1. I would trust a Mora or Bahko, with their plastic handle and holder. I clip mine directly on my swimsuit, it is very easy.

H1 is a great steel, work hardened and impossible to rust.
Spyderco salts are made from H1, FRN and Titanium...

On the Spyderco H1's any and all parts that are not H1 are treated to be impervious to rust.

I would go with either the Spyderco Salt 1 or the new Spyderco Snap It Salt.

I dont know much about diving, but I guess H1 steel would be ideal.

I think I'd only go with a paddling/diving knife without a point. I'm in love with the CRKT Neckolas but they've discontinued it. Grant and I are always chatting about new neck knives.

I have a ladybug but I can't imagine using it in an emergency underwater.

I'm sure Grant will have something to add here.

Here's the Bahco 2444 I use.

http://www.bmtools.gr/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&view=productdetails&virtuemart_product_id=1922&virtuemart_category_id=37&Itemid=470

You can get its luxury version, the Mora Kniv Companion. It still sells for less than 15€ in Greece and it is swimming compatible, with a hole in the seath for water draining.

http://www.skroutz.gr/c/858/maxairia-polyergaleia.html?keyphrase=mora+μαχαιρι&from=autocomplete

There are many diving knives but most are from unknown makers. I like  Tramontina Ocean but if you use an inflatable boat consider a blunt tip knife.

The Bahco is so cheap you can buy 3-4 and if one rusts you use another though.

Mora and Bahco are probably the most cost effective solutions. Since I am going to carry the knife while swimming it has to be small.
If it is a folder, then it must come with a pocket clip. A Dragonfly H1 appears interesting, but due to bloody capital control in Greece I don't know if I can but it online.
A fixed blade would either be on my leg, with some sort of straps, or on the swimming suit (shorts) maybe with a pocket clip.
Great info guys, (and girl) you are amazing!
More ideas would be welcome!

It sounds like you have a perfect knife already, but I'll vouch for KK's recommendation with the Bahco mora type knife.

Value wise, they are brilliant. It is my Go-To knife for work and on the water (because they're cheap, plastic/stainless, and bright orange).

The only reason it's not my *only* knife is because I am a vain man and like hunting style knives.

I think I am going to buy my first Mora knife.
I need your advice guys to choose between the following models:

http://www.actionitems.gr/mora-companion-mo-12214.html
http://www.actionitems.gr/mora-companion-mo-11824.html
http://www.actionitems.gr/mora-companion-mo-12095.html

I cannot see a difference between 11824 and 12095 (is there one?), and 12214 is serrated , so it would cut lines and rope faster.

Unless I am mistaken (am I?) they all have a sheath with a belt sheath, so attaching the knife to my swimming shorts should be easy and comfortable.

The Bahco 2440 is the Mora Companion. It is made by Mora for Bahco (which is a respected tools manufacturer). It is less refined on the back, because it sells as a tool. They sell it in most toolshops. It goes for 7 euros. But Moras are also ridiculously cheap for what they offer (Opinels, Merkator and Victorinox also, the newer "tactical" brands not so much).
Now, any of these will be nice. If you need it mainly for safety, then the serrated is the best option. You can cut the point and mod it to a blunt point knife, in order to avoid piercing your thigh while puting it in its seath during swimming. On the other hand, it's easy to remove the seath, put the knife back (it clicks into position) and then put the seath on your swimsuit's rubber and again. No need for straps and such.
I live and work near that store. I'm happy they include Mora knives now (it's new for them) and I'm going to buy a few myself. We have also the Opinel representative for Greece and Cyprus in Piraeus http://www.opinel.gr/ near the Metro, and some dive centers (such as Atlantis) which sell specialized diving knives.
From Opinel, you might consider the #8 Outdoor. It is good and it has a whistle that might be handy. It is half serrated, although it is better for left handed people. It opens with one hand easily.

The #7 Outdoor Junior is blunted.

The new #12 Explore will have a gut hook, good for cutting fishing lines and nets.

I have the #8 and it is nice. But there's no seath, you would have to find a way of carrying it.

I tried my Ladybug today for more than an hour swimming. Then I cleaned it with great water and dried it with a towel. Let's see what it looks like tomorrow!

The Neckolas is a great knife for swimming in the ocean and TBH, it would be my go to knife for pretty much anything water related.  It wasn't 100% corrosion resistant, and mine does have a few spots on it as a result, but a quick rinse afterwards would pretty well keep it clean enough.

I have been looking for the "perfect knife" since the Neckolas was discontinued and I have encountered a few reasonable alternatives, such as the CRKT Bear Claw and the also discontinued Benchmade 110H20 knife.  I see Benchmade has another new one out, but at $120 it's a bit more than I'd like to pay for something that might end up in the drink.

Is it a neck knife? Does it have a seath?

It's very pointy. Beware when you put it back in seath, try not to pierce your leg. Better, bite it after use, commando style, and get ashore.
