Not sure if an Instagram filter, or a sweet patina, but either way it's a great picture. :tu:
May it be as the Pattern has chosen.

  • Geometry cuts but the steel determines how long.

It does look like the patina is changing since the challenge started.

Both. It's a phone filter, sometime makes it look just a little more interesting that it actually was. Most of the time probably makes it look cheesy...

But this is my first foray into carbon steel. Really surprised at how quickly the patina will start to form. I don't mind at all either.  :tu:

The patina will build quickly. I don't force a patina, I just let it grow. My Slimline Trapper has taken on a beautiful gray and rainbow one just from carrying and using it all the time. :tu:

Well guys, this has been a great challenge.

Figured I'd take this photo, given both my Klein Tools hawkbills were used for decades throughout two different coal miner's careers before being given to me by their original owners--one (the above) was my grandfather's in the Jewell Ridge mine, and the below, the one I'd carried since I got it Thursday from the original owner--an electrician's in a mine in  Buchanan Co, VA for several years who carried it until the bail broke, which it then spent many years in his toolbox until I got it as a gift from him.

Here's the knives with some other equipment my grandfather actually used in the coal mines.   The Justrite carbide lamp, however, wasn't. It was my great-grandfather's coon hunting light. My grandfather still has the battery powered cap light he used with that MSA Combo Cap hard hat.  The Koehler lamp was used to detect hazardous gases.   The belt buckle came from a church rummage sale about two years ago--yep, as per the price scribbled on the paper tape on the case my grandfather and I only paid a buck for it--the Bluefield Coal Show, which is on the buckle, is a local pretty large trade show related to the coal mining industry that takes place every two years at the Brushfork Armory.

Cool stuff Cody.  Thanks for sharing.  Why do miners prefer the hawkbill blade?  Is there a particular use for it?

You know, I'm not quite sure, as apparently  the little coping sheepsfoot Klein knives were issued in the mines as well. I asked my grandfather, and according  to him, it's because the tip of the hawkbill is well suited for wire stripping. They were used for prepping  blasting  caps, opening bags of rock (limestone) dust, and many other tasks.

Thanks for the info!  It makes sense that the curved blade would work well for stripping wire, as it would wrap around the wire.

kaput, can you tell us anything about your Northwoods?  Model name?  Is this one of the older Northwoods before the KnivesShipFree acquisition?  As I understand it, since Derrick Bohn purchased Northwoods, they are produced by Queen.

Not much has changed for me either.  At the office today I have a Champion on my belt and my Queen Canoe in pocket.

If I understand correctly the Northwoods models built with 1095 are GEC built. The models built with D2, CPM 154 are Queen built to Northwoods specs.

I was wondering about that, because this one certainly doesn't look like a Queen.  That makes sense now.  Thanks Dean!

Now it's your turn.  :pok:

I've seen that nice Kissing Crane congress you have.  That one is worthy of 30 days of carry on its own, even if you don't have others to rotate in.  Unfortunately it's been almost 10 years since Kissing Crane were made in Solingen.  So many great traditional slipjoint companies removed from their homeland... :(

I have more trads than I care to mention  I have several different brands and even met one of the owners of GEC and bought a knife from him (didn't think to get him to sign it at the time of course though :bnghd: ) I may yet do the trad folder challenge though :tu:

I have a few Soligen Germany Kissing Cranes as well :D I fancy German made trads probably more than USA ones

Alright....  Well, I look forward to your posts when you do.  ;)

My journey has been a little different.  I've been carrying a SAK since about 1980, and I didn't own a traditional pocket knife until 2007ish.  I haven't really though about it much, but if it weren't for me finally getting into plier-based MTs, I would have never owned a traditional, I reckon.  So, I guess I have Tim Leatherman to blame for the whole thing.  Yeah, that's it...
