And, after seeing Tinner’s and Gareth’s pictures I started counting in my head how many bone stag or stag or faux stags are upstairs in my meager collection.

Good Morning, my name is LC and I have a …

Do you know the difference between Carbon and SS?
Stainless has an ingredient (I think it's chromium) that makes the blade more resistant to corrosion, but more difficult to sharpen. Carbon steel is easier to sharpen, and develops a patina with enough use, but is more susceptible to corrosion.

The advice about Trappers has been great. A Camillus 717Y would be good if you can find one at a reasonable price.

And, of course, great carries from awl! :tu:

What’s the story with the yellow Deleon knives.

Of all the ones I’ve seen like Bone or Wood it’s the yellow Delrin that I find the most old school attractive.

Is it a good material for Traditional scales?

Delrin is very durable and chemical resistant as well. Great material for a hard user.

Great question Harley!

I have found the old Yellow, the NEW SEXY of old stock styles.  Maybe maturity?

When Delrin was first introduced, BLACK was your only choice I am guessing.

Then YELLOW later was made available, kinda like Orange of the 2000s.
From the CASE catalog

The few I have brought home

The Top is a Buck, is Delrin.  Done with a saw cut finish.

The Queen Canoe is bone, and the two Case are Delrin I suspect, smooth.

Delrin is fantastic material.  Its a thermal plastic that actually goes by a lot of names depending on who manufactures it.  I'm sure each company does a little something different to their batch.

Fun fact, Bic uses delrin for their lighters.

As far as why Case yellow delrin is so classic?  I've read yellow so it could be easily seen if dropped but I am not certain.

If you nailed that Camillus, great score!👍😜

PS: My WIFE, never said a word about a knife I bought when she was here. Then after, I understood, taking stock of her inventory of shoes, two closets of clothes, a large collection of Teddy Bears, Longenberger Baskets, coats, did I mention shoes🤪. Then three jewelers boxes, earrings, rings, bangles.  She had it awl.

I'll tell ya what, this thread as been the most fun I've had in a long time.  Traditional folders is like coming home.  I never grew up with them but they are a lot of fun.  While I have a couple GECs I can say from my personal approach and limited experience there is lot to be said about the many other makers.  If you can get your hands on Case before you buy that would be good.  I've had one come to me in poor shape but that was remedied smoothly.

My Camillus, Queen, Robeson, Imperials, PAL, Schrade, and others are all so much fun and of very usable quality.  They may not be as pretty ( eye of the beholder ) with gorgeous stag or amazing cover materials but they are every bit as fun and history of knife making.

One of my most favorites is a 80+ year old Robeson.  There is also a REX I very much love.  I can't forget my Kutmaster.

I'd be dishonest and say my GEC Pemberton was not also a huge favorite.

Have fun and with the ones LC mentioned you can collect quite a fun array of patterns for not much money.  Case is a good solid brand IMO with decent pricing.  Yes they also have some premium steels too.  Check out the thread, Traditional knives premium steels.

All this talk of yellow is pretty ironic, since I opted for a yellow Camillus #63 this morning. I too am a fan of the yellow Delrin.

Great choice, that's the one I would have gone for. Camillus had great history with the military and is my favorite of the old knife makers :tu:

The 66 is a great pattern.  Mine is an off white and if I remember correctly the SAKGuy told me after I found mine at a Pawn Shop that the 66 was featured in a movie about a boy rescuing a horse with his Camillus 66. 😎

The earlier ones like mine are Grain white Pyroxylin or French Ivory, the later ones are Ivory Delrin which are whiter.

Had to venture back to my knife room and get a picture of my 66!

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Sitting between a Boker white bone (top) and a  RR White Bone Barlow.

I am guessing a French White or Vanilla.

That looks like Ivory Delrin that's a bit discolored. French Ivory has a grain to it .
