Kizer Knives- anyone heard of them?
on: November 11, 2016, 01:35:42 AM
I checked out a local knife shop today and the owner kept telling me how wonderful Kizer knives were.  They were all around $200 and up, which seemed like and awful lot for a China made knife.

Anyone know anything about them?  Are they worth that kind of money?

I'm not sure how much faith I have in his opinions after he went on for a bit about why he refuses to carry Spyderco.

I remember hearing the name on BF a month or two ago. I think the sentiment was that they were alright. Had no idea they were that pricey.

I think Glenn Klecker did some knives with Kizer.

Kizer knives are high end import knives.  They don't do a lot of copy cat stuff like most Chinese manufactures but have a lot of designs that they came up with.

No personal experience unfortunately, but they seem to be a Chinese knife company that took it to the next level.......collaborations with known makers/designers etc....

Never heard of them. Found this site:

http://www.discountcutlery.net/Kizer-Cutlery-Knives_c_7205.html

The prices are a bit high for a discount shop. The materials seem good and also the designs. Maybe they're not so bad.

The guy was telling me they had made a huge splash at Blade this year.  I doubted that because I haven't heard of them, and I figured anything that made a huge splash at Blade would have trickled down to our neck of the woods.

He also told me all about the high end materiels that went into them, and that's wonderful too, but as I understand it, the high end materials aren't what make a knife expensive, it's the labor that goes into it.  And asking US made prices for a China made knife just doesn't compute for me.

Several of the YT channels that did booth reviews covered Kizer....also seen some reviews, none negative that I can remember.

Agree 100%

But that doesn't make sense.......

Replace "China" with "South Africa".  Pretty sure the SA Rand is weaker than the Yen.......all that means for the top SA knife makers is they ask comparable prices in US$, which converted to the local currency is astronomical.
But the same is true when a South African (or myself) wants to buy a Sebenza, what is expensive for you is just silly for me with my worthless currency.

That's the free market system, if the materials and quality of the knives are comparable with the best, and people are willing to pay, they will simply make more profit....

And based on the statements ini bold, I know exactly which store you are referring to...

I'd take any opinions or info from there with a large pinch of salt. I've had them try to sell me on stuff with misrepresented info. That being said, it is a nice place to handle some blades before buying.

I had a feeling you might know who it was.  I will say one thing about him, he does seem to know Gil Hibben well, and it was nice to hear that Gil is recovering well from the stroke he had.

Are there any other shops in the area I should know about?

The owners are interesting folk. Fun to chat with though (despite the sales pitches).

Unfortunately, we don't have many good places to shop cutlery in town. I typically end up ordering what I want online.
