How can MTO help improve the world?

Well, given how well this forum is run, and how little the moderation staff actually needs to do since members are largely self governing, I think I need to run for president of the planet.

However, as that is not likely to happen, I have been giving serious thought to buying an island, renaming it Multitool Island and setting up our own nation there.  I am currently looking at an island in Nova Scotia, and an even larger one in Chile.  The one in Chile is several times the size of the one in NS, and it would be nice to get away from winter, but is also a bit remote and more difficult for many of us to get to.

If I should manage to purchase one of these islands, I will plant an MTO flag on it, register as a religion so we can become tax exempt and invite all MTO members to the island, free to stay as long as you like. Once we establish ourselves, we can start pushing for independent nation status and become an actual haven for people who are sick and tired of the smurf that is going on in the rest of the world, and become a beacon for how people should act, and how governments should stick to major and communal issues (fire fighting services, national defense, policing, utilities etc) and not get involved in individuals' business and make it difficult for them to succeed.

But, as that breaks the MTO rule against both religion and politics, I can't go into too many details.

And yes, I read 1984, Fahrenheit 451, The Handmaid's Tale and other utopian novels.  I get the irony.  But, the world doesn't advance without taking risks and experimenting.

Why are most MTO members  male?
Why are most Multitool/pocket knife users male?

Tradition.

Which sucks and I hope that tradition goes away.

Unfortunately, while discussing this option with some women the responses I have gotten were pretty dumb, although that has more to do with the demographic.  For example, a woman (I won't say who, but she may have modeled for us once) once asked me why they don't make multitools for women- which of course they do, the Juice line was originally marketed towards women, but not too heavily so as not to discourage men from buying them.  I responded by asking what features that she, as a woman would like to see in a multitool- what would make a multitool a "multitool for women" specifically, because I honestly see multitools as gender neutral.  I don't think women tighten screws or open the mail or cut zip ties any differently than men do.... so why do women need a "woman specific" tool, and how would we go about making it happen.  I meant for the discussion to be constructive- was it about ergonomics?  Hand size/strength differences?  Colors or aesthetics?  Purse carry versus pocket or sheath carry?  What was it women wanted?

The answer I got is one I have gotten more often than not when asking women what they want, and again, I stress that it is likely my fault for asking the wrong women, and the answer is a bit unpleasant, so only click below if you really want to see how bad it really is.

Show content
A tampon dispenser.

Because apparently that is all women do.

Now I can see some utility in that, but having shared over half of my life with women, and being the kind of man that doesn't mind going to the store and buying them, I would say I have a bit of experience in that sort of thing- obviously limited because men will always be limited in that regard, but I just don't see the marketability or need for that.  Of course, if I am wrong I am happy to admit it and I will support any woman that wants to work on a design and possible production for such an item, but I have to say I think there is a better platform for such things than a greasy set of pliers.

Now that is out of the way, I would also like to point out that there are lots of women that work at all of the major multitool manufacturing companies, and I would personally like to see some more multitools either marketed to or designed for women.  I know of many strong women that feel that almost the entire outdoors industry have ignored them or just slap pink handles on something and said it was designed for women, when in fact it was just made pink.  I find that disturbing, and I would think that with many of the manufacturers being based in a supposedly progressive place like Portland, they would have done more to support a major demographic.

Or maybe they have, and maybe there are just too many Carolannes in the world, and maybe the companies failed so miserably they don't want to try again.

Either way, I am putting my soapbox away on this subject now.  :P

Where did the blaming of kirky originate?

There's not too much of a story there, but suffice it to say, he brought it on himself.... in other words, it's Kirky's fault!   :P

I'll let him tell that story.  :D

Read the above post.   Women are smarter than that, and the few that come here I believe are studying us, like Jane Goodall did with the apes.... only the apes here have pliers.  :D

Given what you have just said, is there a possiblity that dks is a female anthropology professor gathering data for a top secret 'superman' project?

I'll leave that to the Mythbusters.  I have no desire to look behind DKS's curtain to see if there's a man in there.   :ahhh

I know right! I'm excited for it. I wonder which ones of us will turn out evil and have to fight all the stupid goodies?  :D
One of us? I know 3 that will be chaotic right from the get go.
Can I have a word with you behind the laboratory Nate? It's not about joining forces to create an unstoppable 'Megateam Evil' or anything.

I'm working on that.  :D

One minute wasn't enough to really do anything but show the functions of the tool, so that really wasn't what I'd hoped to accomplish with the videos.  I am going to rejig them a bit and try a slightly longer format (I'm thinking two, maybe even three minutes) and try to work in some plugs for The Multitool.org Store while I'm at it.  Now that I have a new computer, the video editing process is a lot less painful, so we may see some progress on that front soon.  :D

Concerning a suggestion previously, with regard to combining various members to produce a super member, it may work like transformers. Mags, you need to find out which bodyparts of the three or more members, can interlock so that you can join together forming one mighty, "legion" like being. It may be necessary to utilise every orifice and every extremity of your bodies to achieve this. I volunteer to video this project.

Years ago a member named Hawkchucker (who has sadly since passed away) started a thread asking folks if they have ever been banned from a forum.  He had been banned from somewhere and in typical Hawkchucker fashion, thought it was the funniest thing ever.  One by one members came out of the woodwork listing the forums and sites they had been banned from and so we kind of got the reputation for being the forum for people that weren't allowed on other forums anymore.  Naturally we took this on as a badge of honor, because that's just the kind of thing we do here.  In fact, I think I am going to talk to Micah about creating a Banned Merit Badge for people that aren't welcome elsewhere.

So why do we put up with you?

Because you are just the right kind of smurfed up for this site, that's why!

Exactly one year after someone here posts a great modded version of one of their tools.

The sky is blue because of dust particles in the atmosphere reflecting light from the sun.  If it weren't for the dust particles reflecting light and obscuring your vision you'd be able to see the stars just as clearly as you do at night.

When will leatherman make a tool I want to actually buy again or why is the sky blue?  ???

Exactly one year after someone here posts a great modded version of one of their tools.

The sky is blue because of dust particles in the atmosphere reflecting light from the sun.  If it weren't for the dust particles reflecting light and obscuring your vision you'd be able to see the stars just as clearly as you do at night.

I know the science-y reason regarding that there are no stars in the moon photos.  8)
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

Partially right. Scattering by particles is called Mie scattering. More important is Rayleigh scattering which is caused by gas molecules. Rayleigh scattering is inversely proportional to the fourth power of the wave length. This means that shorter wavelengths of light (blue) are far more severely scattered than longer wave lengths such as red. Non selective scattering is caused by dust and water particles substantially larger than the wave lengths of visible light, which is why clouds appear white.

(Had to dig out an old Remote Sensing text for the details.   :D  )

I stand corrected!  Partially anyway!  :D

Why are most MTO members  male?

Read the above post.   Women are smarter than that, and the few that come here I believe are studying us, like Jane Goodall did with the apes.... only the apes here have pliers.  :D

Breakfast, Lunch, or Dinner?  Which is your favorite and what would have prepared for that meal.

Why did you cut your hair?

I was playing at a beach quite a ways from home one day and lost my hair elastic.  I had to drive for an hour to get home with no top/doors on the Jeep, and the wind was whipping my hair in every which direction, stinging my eyes and face.  And then, when I got home it took forever to get the knots out, so I decided then that I was going to cut it off.  :P

But I gave it to a charity that makes wigs for kids with cancer and other problems, so even though I did it for my own benefit, I am still claiming it as a good thing in my Karma ledger.  :P

I often miss at least one meal a day as I'm scatterbrained and get distracted, then the next thing you know it's 3pm and I haven't eaten yet.

Typically, for breakfast (when I remember) I will make myself an English muffin with a poached egg, slice of cheese and a couple of strips of bacon on it- basically a homemade egg McMuffin.

Lunch is usually something quick and easy, like some instant soup or a couple of hot dogs.

Dinner is usually more varied- tonight Megan is making pulled pork pies, and last night I made pizza.  I don't recall what we did the night before.

My favorite is all of them, as I am a fat guy.

Oh, and since my eating habits are so messed up, I usually have a bowl of dry cereal (no milk) before bed to keep things regular.  It is almost always Honey Nut Cheerios or Frosted Mini Wheats.

I don't eat seafood and very few vegetables because I am a small child in a fat adult body.
