Nope, just plenty of spray on tan :D
Oh, you mean a  Really Skanky Svord  ::)

Sorry, yes, should have been more specific :D

Well, I got my first fixed blade today. A Kershaw Hunter II. It seems to be everything I need in a camping/hiking blade: light weight, orange handle for visibility, good jimping on the back of the blade, decently think spine, AUS 8A steel, good in hand lock up, and... FFG. All for about $50 CAN. Sounded good to me. Only trade off is the leather sheath. Hopefully I can upgrade to a kydex for it soon. Here are some pictures.

I've certainly nothing against leather but your right, I think I'd want that one in kydex.

For a field knife I would take on searches with my local SAR, and other camp related stuff, kydex seems like it would work best for me. Nothing against leather really, but kydex makes a better field sheath.

I gotta say, I love leather but kydex is usually the better choice...

Though in a field situation you can't eat kydex, now can you?! :ahhh

Congrats on your new blade! orange is a fav :tu:

if you take care of your leather (like any tool) it should hold up fine in the field.
wipe it down when you can, keep the moisture to a minimum (like with your tools).

Leather has been around for a long time and has held up fine. Most people I know have
more of a problem with the cost of leather sheaths and pouches then their ware!

Kydex is cold and hard, not as much personality as leather, I like and have it but
leather is niiice ;)
judge others by how they treat those they are allowed to mistreat

Well, I got my first fixed blade last night - a gift from Neil, a Mora. I'm yet to have a proper look in daylight, but initial impressions were that it's great!

So thanks buddy :tu:

Yup, one of these.  Great blades on these things.  Worked as well as anything else I owned for making feather-sticks.

Cheers again Neil. :salute:

I had a knife that was intended to be a kitchen pairing knife.  It was too thick to function as such so I thought I would make a sheath and call it a bushcraft knife...here it is.  Oh it has a firestarter and the orange rubber band is just for visibility.

Feelings are mixed on this one. On one hand it's really really high quality construction, on the other it's too much chopper not enough general purpose. Plus it's recurve AND convex, I can't do convex to begin with, duno how the heck to sharpen it without a belt sander.

Maybe I'll trade it for something else.

jz,

I was just looking at the whole set today at Warriors.

Sharpmaker?   ::)  No?

So how do you like them?

It wouldn't be convex anymore thou. He said on knifeforum because it's best performing. Meh, guess I'll try it, hope the 40° slot works, would hate to reprofile something this size, and recurve...

Another thing I don't really like, the handle is huge. If I use the choil I can put both hands on the handle.

Ohh I like that

I wouldn't worry to much about the convexing :) Just put a micro bevel on it :)

Just tried that, the 40° slot on sharpmaker doesn't touch the edge.  :ahhh I took out the mouse pad and sandpaper, but I think I made it duller. :( At least it looks shiny.  ::)

Jzmtl,

I can see the problem there that you have.  It's a big knife as well so it might be somewhat of a challenge
getting it done easily on the Sharpmaker.
Maybe try posting it on the Spydie forum and see if the guys/gals have any suggestions?  :)
