@Sos, I took me a while to get a 110.   I finally picked one up and I can tell you it was far too long a wait and for no real good reason.  Yes by todays standards its a big heavy knife BUT in hand its wonderfully at home.  I have one from about 78-79 that is a joy to carry and use.

EDIT: Thanks for awl the kind comments!   :tu:

Back home now.  Still a little wet and drying out.  :)

I was hoping for some great scenery on the ride back, but I mostly saw raindrops on the helmet visor.

Getting ready to head head out this morning:

(Image removed from quote.)

Early in the day I stopped and snapped a couple of pics along the way. The route would along the east side of Lake Pend Oreille and the Clark Fork river. These don't really capture the size of the lake (it's big!), but does give you a sense of the terrain and state of things.....as well as the rain that would start in a few minutes......

(Image removed from quote.)

You can see there is still some smoke haze in the air. When I was packin the bike, I noticed some ash had fallen on the bike's seat and panniers.  :o

I don't see how you guys can be bored with photos of the motorcycle yet, so I've added an extra one:

(Image removed from quote.)

Anyway, northern Idaho is really lovely with lakes, rivers, and hills. I can see why Buck relocated there!

(Image removed from quote.)

well that's a beautiful shot

If I had to choose....well, I'm a romantic at heart. Give me brass and wood and tradition.  :tu:

I get that totally, even if my Barlow has less functionality I still want to carry it before any Celidor, although that is kind of a classic too  :dunno:

Oh! Almost forgot!

I did pick up the makings of a prize pack for a GAW. And they stayed dry!  I'll run that GAW tomorrow.  :tu:

The 110 is just a fabulous knife.  There are numerous knives that are newer, flashier, more 'modern', easier to carry, etc.....but I've never used a knife that was nicer to actually use. A skinny titanium knife with a pocket clip poking out the side will never be as comfortable. The closest I could find might be the Benchmade Griptilian, and that misses the mark set by the 110 in my estimation. Especially since the 110 has such a useful blade length.

The one significant flaw with the 110 might be that the tip is thin (which is nice for some tasks) and is subject to being snapped or "tipped".  I did that once when is was young and stupid. Now that I'm old and stupid it doesn't seem to be an issue.

I have a feeling that the 110's longevity is down to it's sheer usefulness. Which makes sense, it was designed and refined in an age when guys used knives more frequently.

At Buck, I learned the 110 was developed in 1963. The story goes that Al Buck and the board of directors decided to make a large folding knife. While there were some locking knives out on the market, Buck was not satisfied with their designs. He took his three folding favorite knives and used and tested them for a while. Then he went to his engineers and asked them to incorporate his favorite features from each into one knife. Challenge accepted. The prototype was developed and tested, 90 days later it had been tweaked and refined.

In 1965 Buck sold a whopping 6,685 110's.  But the word was out. In 1966 they sold 20,399.

I know many guys prefer the Ranger 112. I love the Ranger, too, but the 110 fits my hand so well and has proven to be so useful, that it will always reign supreme in my heart.  :tu:

Congratulations Dunc! And, great picture of your Buck.

And to Nix, I truly appreciate that you share your experience to the factory, still wanting to try that burger, and then the observations in the factory and the tour.  Then the journey home.

A great picture of your new 112 Slim Pro.

But, did you select your 119? Or is it going to be custom shop project?

There was a question or two about Buck bringing back a pliers based multitool, e.g. Navigator.

The guide was quick to note that we are not the first group to ask about that. Apparently there is still demand for the old Bucktool

The museum had a couple of examples on display. So the Bucktool has not faded from memory.

When I asked about a possible re-release of a pliers-based multitool, the answer I got floored me......

(Read the rest of this post while seated, please.)

Per the tour guide, Buck and Leatherman entered into a "gentleman's agreement" to stick to their respective fields of expertise. Buck would stick to knives, Leatherman to multitools. Please keep in mind, this was shop-floor hearsay, and was not an official Buck policy statement. While it sounds plausible, it may just be a rumor. (The part that doesn't make sense is the Gerber and Bear are making knives and tools, so why would Buck agree to a non-competition agreement with Leatherman?   :dunno:)

Regardless, there don't seem to be any plans to bring the Bucktool back. At least not in the near future.  :(

This is a little confusing as I see at least 10 LM knives on their website.
