Day 17

The Spirit got a lot of use today! First I roasted a turkey for my wife's work luncheon tomorrow. When I checked the thermometer the battery was drained. Of course. That one time you need that stupid thing. So I went to the store and got a battery, and the Spirit assisted in replacing it.

While the turkey was in the oven I worked on a leather sheath. The Spirit got to cut leather, lend a hand with the awl to mark holes, cut thread, and so on.

I also received some packages today, and I used the chisel to open them. Gotta love that tool!

Yep that tool is AWLSOME.

Add full sized scissors, OHO blade and replacable cutters, I might even consider a diamond file on on side. and it would be the PERFECT mid sized MT.

Upgade the chisel, add replaceable cutters and OHO blade, I might even consider a diamond file on on side. and it's big brother Swisstool would be the PERFECT HEAVY DUTY MT.

I don't really need an OHO blade, at least not on a MT. It would also make it illegal in some countries, so why bother trying to implement it.
Replaceable cutters would be a nice bonus, but it would also weaken the pliers head one might argue  I agree on the diamond file. That would be awlsome!  :tu:

For me:
 ● A hole in the awl would be beneficial. SAKs have that, not sure why the Spirit/SwissTools do not.
 ● Textured Titanium outer scales would be nice, as the chrome does dull down after it gets use. Titanium has some grip to it as well. Chrome gets fingerprints all over it, and dulls down some. Means having to polish it to make it look like a shelf queen when it's getting used a lot.  ;)
 ● Chisel ought to have a cutting surface as long as the chisel is wide - that would made for cutting thicker boxes and stuff easier without having to get down to the cable cutters.
 ● Did ya notice the soft seats on the screwdrivers? Maybe if there was a SwissTool Pro X that would allow two locking positions.  :D
 ● Now, will admit that I like a diamond coated file - yet this file does have two different sized teeth on it. Although diamond-coated files are a nice thing to behold & useful for a great many more things. So will say it would be great to have that on the Spirit X.

Still want to do that scissor modification. Guess a Dremel tool would do that quicker with a fiberglass cut-off wheel, then dress it up with a diamond coated file?

About the only thing I miss from a Leatherman Charge TTi (v1.0) is the titanium scales & pocket clip. Since Leatherman sheaths are the weakest points, one needs a pocket clip to clip over the sheath for extra security - more so if ya are a large person. And I miss the S30V steel blade.

Leatherman handles are a bit too thick in comparison to this Victorinox. Glad the Swiss found a way to add more useful tools in there without the added bulk. And I do miss the ruler from time to time, when trying to measure a bolt and smaller things.

Still, for what is onboard and as light as this Spirit X is, am guessing it will be my main EDC tool. Not has any issues of people complaining about the tool as there's no blade parts showing or brandishing. Yet, if your work allows you to use multitools, the OHO would be quicker and faster.

Saw some truckers come into one of the stores I was at, and they thought I was carrying a lot of Leatherman tools on me. They had what looked like 4 each.
What they did not know is I repurposed the nylon Leatherman sheaths for other things. Left I sewed the flap down to carry Apple AirPods, and behind that I carry a sheath to hold a small battery pack to recharge the phone when merchandising. (Right) is the Victorinox sheath, and behind that is a small cheap nylon Leatherman sheath that I carry the PocketToolX Piranha in.

Carry a multitool with me and the Piranha. Still looking for a one piece that is as useful, and still has shallow 3/8 & 1/2 inch wrenches on the ends, that can fit in a small pouch or pocket. There is no way to use the Piranha on battery terminals, but I've used the Piranha to short doorbell prongs and still can pocket the tool in case someone comes to the door fast. A multitool is not as easy to put away quickly, and the Piranha is almost Ninja-Like in the palm of one's hand.  :D

Day 18

After I was done in the shower tonight I noticed that my body lotion was almost empty. It is one of those that has a pump on it. From experience I know that there is still plenty of lotion in it to last me another week or so, but the pump cannot get it anymore. So I used the blade to cut it open. Now I can use up the rest  :tu: I scrap it out and put it into a small resealable container so it doesn't dry out. Of course I took the second picture after I had scraped most of it out already

After that the Spirit assisted in opening a beer, which I am enjoying right now  :D

Day 22 - Typical boring day... NOT!

Was washing clothes and noticed the upper agitator was not working. Strengthened my hands by alternating moving the agitator manually to get the clothes churned. Then watched a video on agitators, and found that the fix is easy - and ordered parts through Amazon Prime. Parts are expected to arrive on Monday.

  1) Used the Can Opener Screwdriver to remove the upper sealed cap
  2) Had to remove the keeper, and seen I needed a square tool, probably an 1/2 inch ratchet extension. However, I stuck the end of the Spirit X handle in, and it fit. :o So held the lower agitator and removed the upper. :tu:
  3) Bolt showing the lower agitator bolt. Did not have to remove it as the lower has quite a lot of tension on it still.
  4) Inner mechanism with worn out dogs. They all were broken and fell apart. Used the awl to move the plastic keeper upwards, and to remove the movable dog remnants.
  5) Shattered dog parts
  6) Another shot on how bad those fell apart. $4 to 8 for parts. Ordered them after doing a search on the model number.

After work I was looking for a decent sized bowl, and a small pot. Bought a TFal non-stick pot, and had to remove the plastic on the outside, and then tightened the glass lid screw. Strange looking end bit though. Looked like a star with a longer, uncentered, flathead slot.

Found this square stoneware bowl that I had to buy. Cooked two different chicken soup cans with extra added ingredients. Think am going to like this bowl, as it kept the soup warm for a long time as I wanted. Got a round ceramic bowl too. Could not decide between the two, so got both. :D

Day 19

The Executive and the nail clipper arrived today and the Spirit got to unpack both of them.
The nail clipper is ok, nothing to get excited about. Don't really care for the fail (see what I did there  :pok:  :D) on it. It will be on car duty. I really like the Executive though! Perfect size to carry it around the house and to cover basic needs. Once this challenge is over it will become part of my rotation.

Day 23 - Rear cargo light was not working. Never replaced the light before, so silly me removed the entire thing. Looked up the light online and discovered this was not a twist off light, but the bugger slides in and out of the twist lock. Screwy design if you ask me. Used the pliers to pull out the bulb as it was stuck in there quite snug.
Will have to do some searching to find a LED replacement that is not carbus but wired end.

Took a nap before work. Was wore out, and had to wait for FedEx to show up for a signature-required delivery. So wasted the entire day waiting. This bug was causing other issues, so bought some medicine to help with that issue too. Was opening the blister package with the chisel. Faster and easier than folding, ripping, peeling, and pushing the pills through... :ahhh got it done the faster way. :D

And when I got home I decided to forgo the soup and wind down with a mug of orange juice + rum. Used the main blade to stir the mixture in.

Was at work earlier and was trying to cut a finger hole with the cable cutter, but it was not cutting very well. So, how does one sharpen the curved cable cutter part of the chisel?

Have a Spyderco Triangle Sharpmaker with triangular ceramic stones. Does not seem to be any preset angle that fits the angle of the cable cutter. Bought this sharpener for its simplicity: keep blade in a vertical position, drag down on the rods. Nearly foolproof.

Looks like that I would require some other near foolproof system of sharpening to have a quick cutting edge. Liked the razor-edge the cutter had originally. Hard to think that cutting three cardboard boxes would of worn off the sharp edge so quickly.

Looks like the chisel is at a 45° angle. So is it safe to assume the cable cutter would be the same angle? Was using a plastic angle guide.

I have no method of measuring the angle on the edge. Using a reflection method, the angles on the side are all the same. Wonder where I can get a sharpener that has a 45° angled rod?

Did not find anything online, so I held the spirit in one hand, and used the edge of a ceramic triangular stone in the other. Rocked the stone back and forth on the angled edge of the cutter, and wiggled the stone back and forth. Stopped, rechecked the angle rocking again, and proceeded. Then switched from the sharpening to the fine stone. Got a nice shine on it.
Will probably stop using the cable cutter for cutting holes in boxes as it is harder to sharpen these areas cause of them being curved.

Will have to look around to see if I can find something similar to 20° sharpener I used with a Charge cut hook, but in a 45° angle instead. Here I cut a channel to the outer edge and slid the ceramic rod out. That worked, but will not suffice for the Spirit X.
