I'm late yet again.

Just consider me out.
Sorry guys! Good luck
Nick, would you want to post extra pix to make up for it?

The fire is only 15% contained, they report. However, it has subsided significantly and is mostly a smoldering mess from what I understand. More rain expected tonight!  :tu:

Good good  :tu:

:like: Your post reminded me a recent post I read on BF, where a long, long time user of 110 eventually worn out his folder lock after literally decades of daily use.

Small world, I have the exact same thing and I gonna post mine to write about it. :D

Cool mod to the pommel.  What motivates this mod?  :pok:
I find it more comfortable with it this way in different grips. Apart from the fact that it’s now individual to me. The edge side guard was too long (I may shorten them more yet) and the blade grind was to make it similar to the 70’s era but was only partly successful.

Now that you mention it, it does make good sense to shorten the guard on the knuckle side a little... where's my angular grinder.... :D

Usually because something else comes up but that's no excuse for 5 times being late in 2 weeks :)

Amazon delivery, so I thought I’d use the Victorinox Rescue Tool to free some new purchases- a Pioneer X and an Explorer, both destined for the mod box for future projects..... the prices were right!

Day 12: Aitor 108mm "Hooters" knife

This is my kit for my current work from home day.

I like Aitor pocket knives, and this is my favorite. It is a wood-scaled 108mm. I don't know the model, but it originally had the "Hooters" logo screen printed onto the wood. I carefully scraped and sanded the logo off, used a pick to get the remnants out of the wood grain, and then used some stain to touch up the area and give it a uniform look again. I'm a pocket knife kind of guy, not a Hooters kind of guy, so that logo had to go.

I really like the size of this tool. It's THICK. It's beefy. It's big. But it's not as big as the 111mm SAKs, and even so it's shaped more like a regular Wenger 85mm, just bigger in all proportions. I really like the Wenger shape (less long for the same thickness), and the Aitor just feels like someone photocopied a Wenger at 130%. It feels good in my hand, the blade is large with a deep belly, and is great for preparing food. The wooden scales are pleasing in the hand, and far thicker than anything you'd find on a Victorinox of similar size.  The opener is the Wenger style, which I prefer. The flat driver/bottle opener has a half stop, but no lockup. The nail file has a scraper blade, which I sharpened a bit to give it a better edge. The sewing awl did not have an edge at all, and is very blunt and oddly shaped. I sharpened mine so it can now punch through leather, but it didn't come that way. The corkscrew fits a Victorinox microdriver. The saw has very, very odd teeth which are not actually sharp in any way. However, it's strangely effective. It's slower than other saws, but it still removes material, and one thing I did notice is that the teeth do not load up with green wood pulp like so many other saws in knives and multitools. The shape seems to be optimized to clear wood from the teeth.  Finally there is a "carbon scraper" tool that is apparently used for a gun. Not really sure what purpose it has.

Overall this knife is a joy to carry and use. It's not as refined as Victorinox, or even Wenger, but the pivots are tight, the blade keeps an edge well, and there is a decent snap to the backsprings. (Like wenger, the backsprings are on the weaker side), and it's just a fun knife to use. It doesn't have a military feel to it at all, it looks a bit goofy, like an oversized SAK, but it is actually pleasant to use. It fits my hand really well.

Here's a size comparison with an 85mm Wenger.

Charles.

Thanks, guys.

We are getting some nice rain now. More expected later.

The fire is still listed as 15% contained, but that hasn't been updated since yesterday. I suspect that this event is over. I suppose that some embers could be smoldering away despite the rains, but I'm going to put the bug-out away for now.....  :tu:

... potential buyers may have to beware, there is a relatively high failure rate if this knife is used for batoning, I am sure this should be safe for light bush clearing, just not entirely sure it is safe to use to chop wood.  Of few cases I have seen, the knife always break at the notch which I think is unnecessary.

Great point, comis. I really think the notch is silly. It was designed for opening marrow bones, which is generally not an issue for me.
However, the notch is brilliant for lifting a pot by its bail off a campfire.   :tu:

Still....I'd rather not have the notch. I have batonned with my Hoodlum and it has done just fine. Still, the question of a potential failure at that notch point means that the Hoodlum gets left at home for more yard work when adventure calls. (Which has been rare recently!)

A shame, because it really is a nice knife in hand and useful as well.

Day 16:

With the threat from the Wildfires abated, I took my bug-out bag back down to the basement. I thought for today's challenge post I'd use a picture of the knives in the Bug-out bag. Solid choices, I feel, but I'd love to hear some criticism or feedback. What knives, saws, or axes are in your Bug-out Bag (if you have one)?
