Day 15: Wenger Handyman - My Original Boy Scouts Pocket Knife

(Image removed from quote.)

This is my Wenger Handyman. I've had this knife since I was 12 years old. I'm 42 now.  From 12-40 this was the only SAK I had ever owned. 28 years of SAK monogamy, and 30 years of ownership. The Sheath is something I made. In one of the boy scout camps I took a leatherworking class, and I was pretty good at it. So I got the big kit and made my own sheath. I also made a sheath for my dad, but he never used it. (he wasn't a knife guy, pocket or otherwise). It's a bit too big for a SAK, and I always pocket carry the knife. But when I'm not using it, it's stored in the sheath just because I made it.

The knife is now a hot mess. Bottle opener rivet has popped when used as a pry bar one too many times. Scales are beyond repair. Awl has a blunted tip. Scissor pivot is loose, and the blade tip is chipped. But it is a 30 year old knife that was used and abused. Every motorcycle trip I have ever taken, this knife was with me (Until the rivet popped). I never lost it in 30 years. I carried it in high school and never got caught, I carried it through an airport once and it wasn't confiscated (but I was still a kid, so it was a looooong time ago). This is my old friend.

I've gotten a Wenger from the same era, with the same tang stamping and I'm going to fix the blade. I will probably just file the awl back to sharp, and see if i can locktite the pivot (the threads are there, the screw just keeps backing out). I'll refresh the backsprings (pre-bend them by hand), clean everything, and put it all back together again, just like it was.  The only difference is I have some walnut scales that will go on instead of the original plastic. I just need to have them engraved first.

I'm a little resistant to doing this for some reason, though. Just seeing this knife, with it's patina, its battle scars, it brings me joy thinking of all the times it's been by my side. I'm also sad that it's in an unusable state right now. Part of me wants to leave it as-is, and part of me wants to fix it. Is that weird?

Charles.

I don't think it is weird, because it does mean so much to you, either way, I am sure you will continue to cherish this knife like the childhoold memory.  And what a wonderful sheath you made for it. :like:

Day 19: I think you're going to see a lot of SAKs and Leatherman from here on out.
My collection of Highlanders and Commanders.  I love the 1 and 2 layer 85mm Wengers with traditional scales.
Just the right size.  The three in the bottom left are the Commanders.
The top two on the right are Fire Highlanders, with the red translucent scales.  Prettiest two I have.
Close up of the old one with the bail and dogleg can opener and cut file.

Day 19: Smith & Wesson Cuttin Horse Double Lockback Knife. One of my first collection knives. Two very sharp blades, one plain, one serrated. The serrations are super aggressive and efficient. The lock for each blade is the furthest back, so the lock bar is quite long. Very solid, it really lives up to its name.

I like that, i had my eye open for a two bladed knife with serrated and plain blades, i will look into that  :tu:

Day 19
Helping my uncle process sheep annually was a highlight of my early teen years, and, after saving, the Kershaw 1034 TF was the first good knife I bought. I dated the box 29/07/89,the day I bought the knife,a day after my 15th birthday. I used this knife to gut and skin sheep for a few years. Another special, albeit plain, piece.

I've had mixed experiences with Maserin knives, some of them have been real shockers. This one however is superb - fantastic fit n finish with super-tight tolerances. I bought it for my brother one Christmas... he never used it.

That's a good read, and I am curious, what CD did you buy?  I quite like the Juice offering, it fills the gap between full size and pocket tools nicely, and can never fully understand why LM decided to end that line.

The CD was Bryan Adams “So Far, So Good”.   The funny thing was one of the songs on it had its own story from my college semester in Spain

The Juice is a great little tool and a lot of character as well.

Day19
I'll look in my old desk drawer now moved and repurposed into a sewing table. This is all quick grab tools and a little bit of drawing and layout stuff kept handy for small projects. All this will probably be transferred to a new workbench when I get set up.

3 multi tools are visible in the photo:

A modified Leatherman Micra. By modified this had the plastic plastic shell which has broken off and replaced with washers for bolt spacing

The Stanley licence of the SOG Pocket Power Plier.

And the Shrade ST1 that was a gift from MTO member gerleatherberman during the Shrade tough 30 day challenge. My wife likes this one because the tools are accesable, so it will probably stay here for machine adjustments.

Day 18

The purple Leatherman Juice XE6.  This is a tough little multiool that has seen a lot and always reminds me of a hard working ship on a very hard working deployment with one of the best crews.

I can relate to this post!  I remember circling in the Gulf for so long I saw fist fights break out over whose turn it was to fetch the water for the coffee maker (Stennis CVN-74).  LOL!  I've bought 2 of those XE6 Juice's.  I think they are probably the toughest and most versatile of the smaller Leatherman tools.  I sharpened the blade of one of them to a surgical edge and didn't even feel it when I flipped it closed and it bit me something terrible.  That was one of those super glue and electrical tape moments for me.     One of those is in the pocket of the sheath of my Ka-Bar BK-16.  All bases covered in the woods with that setup.

DAY 19
This is a knife that honestly I don't know if I've ever used or will ever use, but man it looks cool.  (I guess it falls into that "That's not a knife" meme category).  Even as a combat knife, the sheath system is lousy and the knife itself wouldn't be that great for the task.  Probably has a lot to do with why they stopped making them.  So it sits in the collection to look cool.  That's its job!
