:like: How about this Curel, i picked this up in Porto Santo a few years back, i have good sea legs but that crossing was something else, by far the worst seas i have experienced, i wouldn't like to have been a cleaner on that boat that's for sure  :D

Day 24 (Happy Battle of Bannockburn Day!):

Today's carry is the delightful BRK 'Wayfarer'. What's not to love? 3.5" blade in CPM-154 and built to last (like all BRK knives). The handle is distinctly small, however the ergos on this knife are still really good. I typically use it with a 3.5 finger grip, but a 4 finger grip is possible.

The knife sits deeply in a great little leather sheath; however, drawing the knife can be a bit fussy. My solution was to pit a chunky knot through the lanyard hole. My pinky instinctively grabs the leather between knot and handle and facilitates the draw. The know probably helps in retention with that 3.5 finger grip I tend to use.

The sweep of the scales make a nice thumb rest for some cuts and allow for a pinch grip with some slicing action. BRK put a nice convex edge on this one and I find it easy to maintain with a field expedient sharpener that I made.

For me, this is about as perfect as an EDC gets: easy to carry, easy to access, highly functional. Another win for BRK.  :tu:

This Colt is a nice little thing, China made again but well enough made  :tu:

Nice one! :tu:

F&F is surprisingly good for such an unexpensive (not cheap) knife. Everything is smooth, razor sharp, no blade play, very strong springs.

ICEL is one of the largest knife/cutting utensils manufacturer in Portugal. They export most of their production to countries awl over the world.

Here's the link:

That's probably why I do remember seeing them, this challenge is going to break my piggy bank!

Very nice!  I remember seeing you have a good number of half grip knife, and I gonna bet you have better finger dexterity than me.  Whenever I am looking for a fixed blade, I always lean towards full fingers grip.

I think Heckler & Koch have their knives made by Hogue now as well :tu:

Hogue does seem to make pretty good knives, and I think it is smart for H&K to partner with them.

Vic. Outrider (111mm).
I like it for the saw more than for the blade.
It's a nice size for outdoor/hiking tasks but lately I feel I'd like something... more sturdy.
I guess a fixed blade with around 4 inch blade would be an idea?  :dunno:

Nice! It's a very common design in Portugal. As per difficult sea travel, you should (not?) try going from Peniche to Berlengas...

It's a very short trip, but it's famous for being the worst we have in Portugal.

 :D :D

Hopefully one day, i'm OK in rough seas but this was something else, depends a lot on the boat of course but you know it's bad when even the locals are turning green  :D

Fuzzy Snips Day 24

It got so hot and humid here today that I had to take drastic decisive action and cut the bottoms off my fantastically tight jeans... Think 70s Paul Hogan and you're there.  :tu: Unfortunately, the Surge that I've grown quite fond of during Lockdown failed me spectacularly - the scissors just could not cut the denim and I had to go fetch the Swisstool to finish the job. In hindsight, probably should've taken off the jeans first... but you live and learn...

I am in this phrase where any fixed blade I want I would like it to be 3" and up, since I always carry a SAK and it pretty much covers all the my knife needs under 3".  And ideally, I would love to find something very lightweight, thin stock and 3.75"-4" handle, so it is even possible to carry it may even fit in a pocket.

Based off that, I think the Bobcat Hunter sounds like it could be a sweet knife for your needs.

I would strongly avoid the Carolina Knife and Tool-made Winchesters and many Smith and Wesson knives, but many are quite good.

Remington. From the 1920s until right after WWII (after which they merged with PAL Cutlery), they made their own knives. In the 1970s, Bowen Knife Co. made the Bullet Knife.   In the late '80s, Camillus picked up the contract and made many traditional and modern patterns. Bear and Son produced a lot of different patterns as well after Camillus closed, and right up until 2-3 years ago when Buck bought the Remington knife license, and those vary from overpriced 301s as the "Bullet" knife, to inexpensive imports using 420J2 steel. Fox in Italy also made a series in 2006 (and those are amazing!)  However, some are cheap knvies to be avoided made to be sold in cheap gift sets at Christmastime and the lik.e

Winchester. They made their own knives in the 1910s-1930s.   Over the years, through Blue Grass Cutlery, Queen produced some knives. While inexpensive Orient-made knives, there are some Blue Ridge Winchesters that are very good for the sub $20 price tag. The ones you'll find at Walmart (made by Carolina Knife and Tool, owned by Gerber) are horrible.  But, there's a super-cheap version of the Gerber Multiplier they used to sell that I quite like. It's way cheaper than the MP600 Fisherman; even used despite being as uncommon (due to the fact its MSRP was ten bucks).

Browning. Their current offerings are all over on the quality scale, with many being very good (I own none, however). Before then, there was the Tracker series by Gil Hibben in the '70s (I own one), some traditional knives produced in the USA and Germany, as well as a line of both traditional and modern designs produced in Japan in the 1990s.

Ruger. Currently, CRKT produces a rather neat looking lineup of products. Case had the license before that. Various companies have had the license, and some they've made up for gift/promotional purpose as well.

That's just the ones you'll find the most often.
Thanks for the information.  I find it interesting all the swapping of who makes different beands.

This Colt is a nice little thing, China made again but well enough made  :tu:

Day 24

Byrd Wings

I´m a big fan of the dyad pattern and the Byrd Wings Slipit, that´s the small one, used to be my EDC when I worked in the Jumbo DC. It´s a sturdy and well made slipjoint knife, whereas the large one has liner locked blades. I never used the large knife.

There´s a dyad club here on MTO: https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,72189.0.html

Those are interesting little knives.  A couple of the Spyderco Byrd knives have caught my eye

:tu:

Nice pair!  I have seen a few modern knives you posted, and from a traditional focused collector point of view, which modern knives are your favorite in terms of value and performance? :pok:

My favorite modern knives at the moment are Spydercos. There are a lot of good knife companies out there producing good knives but Spyderco have been my favorite since about 2008. I think the Spyderco Military is one of the best knives ever to come down the pike. While it doesnt get in many pics these days I still carry one a lot.. I have one clipped to the waist band of my short breeches at the moment.    :D
