Day 23

A Bark River Essential.  This is one of those knives that I didn’t really need but just wanted.  It is such a great little size, feels so nice to use and has an awesomely colored maple burl handle.

Day24
Some old school steel

Shumate's tungsten straight razor that I purchaced about '03ish to use as a patch knife when I got into muzzleloaders. My bag was (and still is) an old east german ak mag pouch with internal "pen slots" that were most likely for cleaning tools, but a straight razor fit perfect.

A knock-off Christy that I got at a general store when I was probably about 12. Unfortunately time and a kid's neglect have not been kind...the lock is frozen, so it just slides back and forth.
I keep it just because actual Christy are so odd to see.

A 1950s sportsmans knife, I did a thread on this elsewhere on mto when I got it a year or two ago.

And a vintage Dunhill side roller, gold plated. This was actualy my first wick lighter; again I was probably 12-13 when I got this from a second hand shop. These are surprisingly collectable now but almost 30 years ago nobody wanted 'not a zippo with a weird monogram'
I used to be a lot of things, and someday will again.
But for now I'm just a lost jack of trades with neither mastery nor home. ~NoaIsumi

The BRK Essential is an awesome knife.  :like:

Need?

OK, that's debatable. Nevertheless, the Essential is one of those knives that is fun to use and good at most of those things one needs a small knife to do. I loved mine....but then I gave it away...to someone who gave it away.......awl in a good cause!  :D

Day 23

(Image removed from quote.)
I think amongst the MCU characters, Dr. Strange bound to be one of my favorites.

(Image removed from quote.)

On a stranger note, here are three that's pretty cool and strange.  The bottom Mikov fish slip joint I picked up from a trip in Europe couple years ago, the middle BODA fish knife I got from an ebay seller in China, and the top is the Le Theirs Rotosphere, which is a modern iteration of friction folder.
Art meets functionality!   Beautiful!!!

DAY 23
My Estwing Tomahawk.   I've carried it on occasion as a backup, self-defense when hunting, but not much use other than that.  The hatchet part - I got bored and now it can shave the hair off your arm  ;) and I sharpened the point on the spike as well.   Aside from that - went dual sport riding a bunch today and had a blast, even in the rain.  The DR-Z400S was a ton of fun today (even getting pelted with rain at 70mph, which felt like needles hitting my stupid self whilst not wearing all the protective gear!)  Ah well...   Gotta take risks sometimes, and the memories of riding today are worthwhile.

Easy cleaned for sure  :tu:

Yeah i remember similar years ago too, you never see them now..i wonder why not :D

It's not very one hand friendly as you need to open the ball detent first, then flick while trying to remember what part of the blade is sharp, doable with practice i would think, i will leave it though, very few of my knives have drawn my blood but this is one that has, i have a healthy respect for it now  :D

(Image removed from quote.)
I watched some youtube videos for this knife design, surely is very fascinating.  And with a false grind and unique blade/handle shape, it could be confusing where to grab and even draw blood.  But surely a curious knife, great find!

Day 19: Elk Ridge ER-301

(Image removed from quote.)

I like hardware stores. When I travel, I like to find the old-timey-ist hardware store I can find, and buy something from their knife case. Especially if I'm in an area for a while. So, I was on a work trip just outside of DC, and I picked this up at Brown's Hardware in Falls Church VA.

It's not an expensive knife. I think it cost me $20 in the store, and you can get them for half that on Amazon. But it spoke to me and I snagged it.  The oak handle matches my watch, the pocket clip is perfect, the shape and blade are all great. It's a nice small, unassuming knife to carry in a big city. Came really sharp too, and seems to hold an edge well. I like it and carry it occasionally.  Here it is making short work of some bangers and eggs this morning.

Paleo-Fuzz (I know, again) Day 23

Yesterday's neolithic flint wasn't an arrowhead, but today this one is... and it's huge!  :ahhh

(Image removed from quote.)
I don't know much about Archery, but kinda curious won't this big arrowhead make the flight short and difficult to 'stick'?

I like them very much but never used them so I don't know if they are good to use. They feel solid enough so I thing they do well.  :hatsoff:
 :hatsoff:

Day 23:
(National Day of Remembrance for
Victims of Terrorism!)

I followed Powernoodle's example today and pulled out my Al Mar Small SERE. This knife is....36 years-old.... :o  I thought the SERE was a brilliant design, and the last knife I'd ever buy. (Go on, you've told your self the same thing, I know you have. And I'm sure we all mean it at the time..... )

(Image removed from quote.)

I have to say this knife has exquisite construction, fit, and finish. And I still think the design is quite nice: part utility, part survival, part tactical. However, for just a wee bit more weight, I find a Buck 110 to be more useful and comfortable. I've also become a bit suspicious that the vertical stress riser formed by the swedge is a potential weak point. Still, I love it and have taken it on many an adventure.

I have told myself the same line so many counts I lost count of it, it is like 'losing weight' on new year's resolution. :D
Al Mar was such a hit back in those days, this must have costed a pretty penny back then. :tu:

Did you know they now have an Essential II that is a little larger blade?  Maybe it’s time you added a new one.  I’ve been tempted a few times.

Day 23
I'm fairly new to the PST,having acquired 1 last July.
I've carried and used it on occasion, and,I'm enamored of this little marvel

I'm amazed at the amount of guys who have PSTs that "My wife bought me just after they came out, and I can't do without it". I know a guy who carries one with no date codes on it at all (late 80s?) that he's carried since new. The PST is a very practical knife-sized tool that just has enough to get you out of a bind without feeling like you're packing a brick in your front pocket, or having an undersized tool not good for much--which to me, is pretty much everything in the current Leatherman catalogue minus the Rebar (which is only a little bit heavier and thicker than the PST).

BRK do have a good collection of short fixed blade available, I have been eyeing many of them for a long time.  Essential II being one of the fore front candidates, I am also thinking about the Bobcat hunter for the thinner stock/longer blade, yet lighter weight.  Any comments on the spec difference between these two?

They really do have some nice small blades.  I also have a Bravo  Necker which is also a small one.

The Bobcat Hunter does look longer and sleeker.  Based off the specs and photo, I would say the weight difference difference is due to the Essential II having a thicker blade with more belly.  So in the end it would come down to what use you have in mind.

That's wood? :o :like:

Yes.  I don’t know how they do the coloring but they get great coloring within the woodgrain.

Day 24

Since I was talking about BRK, here is one I got a while back when BRK came out with a lightweight version with 3V for Bravo one.  Shortly after that, I read about BRK sometimes would mix up steel for their production and there were some heat treat problem.  In retrospect, maybe I should check on this knife to see whether it is really 3V, or just A2 sold as 3V.  Overall, I do like their workmanship in general, but there are horror stories on BF that would make one think twice before getting one.

Gerber Stockman

Somewhat less traditional, with stainless blades and a backlocked main blade.

Like the back lock, don't like the bolster decoration.

Still worthy of  :gimme: :gimme:, though.
