Day 15

Today was a quick trip to a grocery store.  Afterwards, the Outrider helped cut a couple plastic rings then open a beer.

Saturday, so there has to be a bit of Mac in pockets.

Same make than earlier one, so I thought fixing on top of washer would be the same. It was not. Screws to be undone and new ones to fixed. This is where the Forester failed and Tinker came to the rescue. I think it is fair to say that when an SAK is called Forester it might not be at its best inhouse tool for modern utility room tasks.

All in all, I do like my Forester but today Tinker was the better tool. Unpacking etc. that was done with the Forester would’ve been sorted with it all the same.

You have to unlock it to fold it away after opening your beer! Quite an annoying functional difference as far as I am concerned

For me it's part of the ritual of opening. You know you've done a great job when your tool is finally folded back into its place. The art of opening has a meditative appeal...

But I understand, sometimes it can. suck. That's when the combo tool shines...

Day 16

Did some quick maintenance for the home internet networking, and used the outrider's scissors to trim the zipties.

I am big fan of both the small blade and the scissors on regular 91mm, and carrying 111mm sometimes do have me missing them.

Question: If you can only have a scissors or a 91mm small blade on your favorite 111mm as a mod, what would you choose? :pok:

Since we have reached half-time, I think it's high time to state that I really, really like 111 mm SAKs in general and the Hercules in particular. If you can fit them in your pocket - and I for one can - they beat 91 mm SAKs in almost every respect (provided they are legal carry).

Considering what a disaster the GAK was during last year's Soldier challenge, I have to admit I am a bit surprised how infinitely much better the Hercules suits me. The slide lock, the absence of the stupid OHO mechanism and the toolset - which is actually useful in everyday city life - really make a HUGE difference.

What's your verdict on 111 mm so far?
Contrarily, I actually quite like the OHO and do think it is one of the highlight of 111mm for me.  In some way, using a sandpaper to slightly rough up the opening hole has make its opening that much easier and faster, and together with the lock, it has eliminate my desire to carry any independent folding knife.  However, as stated in Nix and my post, I do miss the small blade from time to time, and am growing fond of the scissors on all SAK models in recent years.

Day 15
*Sighs*.  "I so want to go to Ibach (and Reichenbach whilst I'm there......)."
If I ever go visit Switzerland, that would absolutely be on top of my list too!  I would love to take a tour and see how everything's made.

Your installation looks professional! Do you have that much devices and rooms?

Here we only have 60 m² (Munich Area ist very expensive!). When we moved in I mounted LAN plugs, sadly with only 100 MBit speed, in the living room and also in the bedroom. But nowadays most connections are via wifi (except my Notebook which uses a LAN cable).

I would definitely prefer scissors on my mod.

I am write there with you in that assessment, exceptI don’t really need the bigger grip.

The 91mm (or 93) are just perfect for pocket carry and with the right toolset for the occasion can accomplish almost any task.  I don’t miss the pen blade that much, because most the time I’m carrying a Compact (or variant with combo tool) or a 93mm.  Also sometimes I’ll just carry a traditional for fun which gives me that option.
Hmm...interesting prospective.  I have always wanted to pair a SAK potentially with a OHO folder, since it is quicker and easier to use, but an OHO 111mm with a small traditional folder is a pretty cool concept, I'd love to try that combination some day. :like:

Day 16

Carrying the Adventurer today. The slider broke on a bag of dog food (second time with this brand in as many bags, poor design) so cut open the bag to transfer it to one that actually works. And Coco getting down with nature

(Image removed from quote.)
(Image removed from quote.)
I read the post wrong, and thought to myself if the dog food bag can break the slide lock, that must be one tough bag of dog food.... :D

I also like having a file (and saw) and recently got a 91mm Ranger so I could have one in something easier to carry than the Swiss Champ. Work Champ appeals but doubt I’d actually carry it, whereas the Outrider (no file though of course) seems to be a great compromise between weight and utility.

Question - is the work champ file much bigger on 111’s than those found on 91’s in the same way the saw is? The 120’s and 130’s (same size as each other) definitely even more useful again IMO

See my recent post with blade, scissors and saw size comparison here (shameless plug  )

https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,86355.msg2197772.html#msg2197772

Please feel free to add file comparison, or any other tools if you like

 :tu:
I love having file on my SAKs, so much so I even prefer that over a saw, especially for the urban environment.  The file 111mm indeed is much longer and beefier than a 91mm file or 111mm file.

Here are some of the measurements(roughly) I get from measuring the thickest part of the saw/file on 91mm vs 111m respectively:

111mm saw --  1.5mm
111mm file   --  2.25mm (50% beefier than a 111mm saw)
91mm saw  --   1.25mm
91mm file    --   1.7mm (36% beefier than a 91mm saw)

Btw, great post on the comparison photo on scissors/blade/saw, excellent job!

What's your verdict on 111 mm so far?

I had some 111 mm before. Had a Rucksack in the late 1990ies. Don't know where it is now. My first new victorinox was the WorkChamp in 2015. It got its fair amount of use. Now I don't have it anymore, it got a new home with a good friend. Now I've only the WorkChamp XL aka the Beast.

The Beast has an enourmous amount of tools of which several (Marlin Spike, Belt Cutter, Hoof Cleaner) can only be found here. As we are in lockdown mode, there's not much chance to try it outside, where it really shines (saw!). I'm very happy with the Beast as I prefer the high end models to their slimmer cousins.

What I like on the 111s? The bigger bottle opener. I used this screwdriver last year to unscrew the toilet flush - a big, bad screw which was exactly matched by the bottle opener. And you don't have to worry if it'll break when you use it as a pry bar. Then: The bigger, locking blade. And also the philips screwdrivers underneath the scissors and pliers.

When I compare the Beast with a) the minichamp, b) the XLT and c) the spirit, it seems I'll be going back to the minichamp and XLT. The reason for this? Mainly our stupid knife laws. And also weight. The XLT has all functions I want and nothing comes close. But the Beast won't be back on the shelf, it'll also get a share of attention in the future.

Maybe I should try an outrider....  ???

When I first move to my place a long while ago, I had a feeling everything will need a connection one way or another, so I try to hard wire the entire place as much as I can, just in case I may need it someday.  Turns out I was right--it's really ridiculous how everything now needs an internet connection, and I won't be surprised if my coffee maker needs one someday.

Right now, close to 30 devices are live on the network currently.

Great foresight!

Day 16.

I have noticed that the RAF Hunter was not specified in the escape kit for  players of the 1970's boardgame "Escape from Colditz". So, in the spirit of whatever local pandemic rules you may have where you are best to keep a SAK handy I say.

What an oversight! How is one supposed to break out of a Nazi camp without a SAK?

By the way, I hear they are planning a sequel: Escape from EU.

Nice write-up!

I was on the fence between the Forrester and the Trekker a couple of years ago (maybe less... Unsure) I'm in the corkscrew camp, so I figured that the Forrester was the way to go.  But my search for a locally sourced non serrated Forrester came up empty.  In the meantime I got my hands on a non serrated Trekker.  I rationalized it in my head by saying that I have enough corkscrews.  I also figured that the grip would be a bit more comfortable.  But then again the rubberized grip may be an advantage.

So I solved this concern with OHO Nomad.

Yet, I wonder.... Can a 111mm SAK without a corkscrew open a corked bottle of wine?  Anyone up for the challenge?
