Cheese Day 5:

It doesn't really seem to be changing in any notable way. Smells just fine......

Both Adventure Boy and I thought it was tasty and enjoyable.

Would you consider extending the challenge beyond 7 days?

I would....because the cheese challenge has not been a great burden....so far....but I'm down to my last two unrefrigerated cheeses. Adding previously chilled cheeses at this point wouldn't be scientific. And this is strictly scientific. Absolutely.

Are we going to see a sack full of potato crisps and chocolates as your entry?  I suppose it is a lucky thing they don't make powdered Guinness....

Oh, wait.... I'll write that down  :tu:

Nice work Nix  :D

I picked up some noodles that might be ok for dinner, you are supposed to add onions and chicken but i'm pretty sure i can skip that step and it will be ok, good till tail end of 2022 and i think 500 calories per serving, it reckons its 2 servings but it doesn't really look that much so will call this dinner, also picked up a bottle of the vital ingredient :tu:
Breakfast is an easy one, i don't have any usually so that would be just a coffee
Lunch, i was thinking crackers and depending on how Nix gets on, cheese..but i would miss butter, if Nix cheese is rank by day 7 i will go with a tin of Tuna
Dinner, Noodles
Supper,  not thought about that yet
Snacks, probably nuts, crisps and a couple of mars bars or something, drinks would be coffees and i think i have some orange and cola powders from an army mre but i think we werent allowed those? if not i could throw a can of Pepsi or something in my bag

:like:  Sounds like you've built some great options. I thought I had seen a chicken breast in a pouch once upon a time, but if I did, I couldn't find one. Still....canned chicken might be an option.

And...you've made a wise choice with that Tabasco.  :D

Yes, we'd like to avoid repurposing old MRE items for this challenge. The idea is to build an MRE with what you can find while away from home. So many MRE item seem to be standard 'junk food' that one finds everywhere from Hardware stores to Supermarkets. And Gas Stations. You might be able to find instant tea mixes or other beverages. If it is caffeine you are looking for, some sports drink mixes now come fully loaded with carbs, electrolytes, and caffeine.   :dunno:

I don’t know if your markets carry it, but mine has small cans and pouches of shredded chicken.  It isn’t the best or tastiest, but could work for the purposes of this challenge.

Funny, I just had another dry run this morning with a ramen noodle this morning, and the flavor is very similar to the yaki soba:

:iagree: We have a Korean supermarket next door to work and they do an enormous range of instant noodles. For a couple of months we would hold 'Noodle Club' in our tearoom every lunchtime and try all the different flavours.

Will pop over there next week to get some in for the challenge (and beyond)

Hehe, I'm with Hevy and Mags...in fact, it is almost like comfort food to me. :D

I think I am probably the easiest customer to please--all the freeze dried food, MREs, instant noodles, Cup O' noodles...are like modern wonders to me, just pour in hot boiling water and wait 3-5min(12-15 min, if I need to setup/prime my good'o MSR whisperlite stove, which is just enough time to setup tent/everything and get ready for the night), then I have a piping hot semi-gourmet meal right in front of me!  Wait...and no dishes to wash and minimal clean up afterwards?!  Are you kidding me?  They are awl-some! :woohoo:

Probably why Mrs. constantly refuse to do multiple day camping trip with me. :D

Here's some food from the past....

Cheese Day 6.

No oil separation. No visual evidence of the cheese deteriorating or spoiling. Smelled fine, however I had just used some moisturizer on my hands which left a chemical odor on my hands and might have deceived me.

Still tasted as good as ever. Adventure Boy was taking a nap and missed out on the test. It's hard to find good help these days.

Spam and corned beef are readily available but i don't recall seeing a can of chicken, i will look next time and get one to try if they have any  :tu:

My coffee is 60 cals each and i will probably have 4 in a day, the tin of tuna i got is 140 so i need to somehow up my callorie count, i may have to have a breakfast after all  :o

Cant go wrong with noodles, i do recall having an instant rice thing once and it was ok too, i like those Nissin soba yakitori pot noodle things and was thinking one of those for lunch would work, that's my backup plan anyway

The ones I’ve seen are in with the Tuna Fish, before they are manufactured by tuna fish companies.

I’m not usually a big breakfast eater, but I have learned that sometimes my body still wants nutrition.  That is is why I frequently will drink my breakfast in the form of a protein shake.  I have even gone as far as mixing protein powder with coffee.  Coffee + Chocolate protein powder = Mocha breakfast.

I finalized my MRE. Down to 2500 Kcal, 1600g (3.5oz), 20g of carbs. :like:

I removed the plain butter. Nothing to spread it on. Replaced it with delicious peanut butter cups. Which in keto are called fat bombs apparently.

I had to remove my dried tomatoes. Sad to see them go, as they were my salad aka my only vegetable, but I missed doing the calculation of carbs per package. They had 1.7g of carbs per 25g serving, and it's a 125g package, but I had listed them as 1.7g of carbs for the whole thing. 8.5g total for the package is way too much for a keto mre so they had to go.

I won't post everything now, in case I discover another great addition and be forced to take new pics all over again.

I've been trying out some stuff I included. The Quest bars are good. The cookie dough flavour that I included in the mre is the best so far, so I am not changing it. The peanut butter cups are amazing. The biltong was ok. The salami was a bit salty, but fine. The cans are ok, I especially enjoyed the sardines, they were great. The chocolate is chocolate, so pretty good. Those cheese crisps though. The flavour stays with you, because you'll be burping it hours after you are done eating them.

I wish I had individual SPAM packets, and those neat packets of olives and pickles I keep seeing on-line but can't find anywhere. But I am happy with what I found and with my final MRE.

Sounds good, RP. Strong work to get your GSMRE dialed in already.   :tu:

I think mine is set as well. I haven't altered it in the past week, so I'm probably done.   :D

I'm impressed by how dedicated you are being to the keto koncept. No tomatoes....? Oh, that's a bit sad and would probably be a fruit too far for me. Man does not live by peanut butter cups alone!

Don't be too disappointed about the Spam: 2g of carbs per Single Classic.  :dunno:

Cheese Day 7:

Looks good, smells good. No evidence of deterioration, breakdown, or spoilage.

But....how does it taste?

Tastes good. Still tangy, salty, slightly sweet. Adventure Boy concurred that it was tasty and edible.

This cheese isn't going to win any ribbons at the county fair, but it has held up well. Today the temperature in the house got up to 69ºF (20.5ºC). Not hot, but felt warm.

I am satisfied that, stored in a cool (room temperature) and shady spot, this cheese is shelf stable for 7 days. I'm not sure it would be a good idea to go backpacking in summer with these cheeses in warmer climates, but I'd be happy tossing a few in the food bag or GSMRE for a weekend of camping in Spring or Fall.

Adventure Boy says it is better to eat them all at once and then burn the excess fat off if needed. He's entitled to his views.
