Chow Day 10:30
Mid-morning snack.  I've just had the chocolate, peanut butter Zone bar that I didn't have with breakfast.  That's 220 calories, 14g protein, 1g fiber, 24g carbohydrates.

Sounds better than my breakfast......

Chow Day ( more on the spork ):

This Gerber spork is both a triumph and a fail.

It comes as a two-piece 'multitool'. The spork bit is thin titanuim. The accessory multitool is mid-weight steel. They snap together around a rubber knob:

The Ti spork bit is really well designed....for right handed eaters. The offset tines work well with noodles and soft stuff like fruits, but maybe less so for chunks of meat. The bowl is a good size and holds a nice mouthful of soup, apple sauce, etc.... The edges are fairly straight and work well to cut soft foods. Anything you could use a butter knife form this spork will do a decent job with. And it is wonderfully light! The handle could use an extra inch of length and the spoon/tines section might be slightly improved by being polished smooth as opposed to slightly textured. Overall, the Ti spork gets a 'B+' from me.

The accessory tool is a bit different.

It is designed to be a package opener, can opener, cap lifter, pry bar, and screw driver. When snapped onto the spork, it acts as a 'kickstand' to keep the eating end up off the ground. It also allows the spork to hand off the side of a pot.

Awl good ideas....but it is heavy and pointy. I made a tiny cardboard sheath for the pry bar end to keep it from poking holes in my gear when stowed in a bag ( and being jostled around on a hike ).  The ability to hang the spork of the side of a cup is nice....but it feels a bit like a solution in search of a problem.

I've had variable success with the small serrated 'package opener' serrations. If I hit a sweet spot it can work. But tough plastic packaging can bind up. Never tried the can opener or screw driver features. Cap lifter works just fine. But I've never needed a cap lifter in the field....and I'll probably have a SAK with me anyway......

Given the extra weight, awkward dimensions, and redundancy with the SAK I'll surely be carrying....the steel multitool bit will get a grade of 'C' and be discarded. The Ti spork stays.

Chow Day 2252

I still have a few items left in my food bag, and between the hummus chip and peanuts, I did choose the Hummus chip, just for curiosity sake.  It was ok, but the taste is kinda blend.  I wish I would have known about this chip earlier and I could have tossed in the tomato hotpot earlier.  It could have gone quite well along with the crisps included in the hotpot, which the tomato soup had a tangy taste.  But like the real MRE, you won't really know how good it would be based on just the menu, until you try it for real.

The wrap

I would really like to thank Nix and Mags for this fabulous challenge, pretty outlandish and fun to be part of. :salute:

3700kcal is really a lot of calories to eat, and after surveying what's left, here are the items remained:

2x UCC coffee with cups 45kcal ea
1x Pocari sweat  287kcal ea
3x Japanese miso soup packets 21 kcal x3
1x Mala peanuts 69kcal
1x Mocha chocolate cigarettes. 1box 56 cal

Total Kcal 565kcal remains

Considering how I constantly felt like I am filled up to my brim and it wasn't a physical day at all, it wasn't too bad.  But nutrient wise, I think there are way too much artificial flavoring and msg in these foods, and it is probably not very sustainable and bad for health in a longer run.

Mrs used to swear by these self-heating pad 'hotpot' as her favorite late eats, and now I can see why.  It's easy to prep and everything is self contained.  All you need is just some drinkable water and you don't even have to do dishes when you finished.  Kinda like Mountain House, but on steroid.

It was a great joy to see all kinds of food and choices in this challenge, and I think I do need to go back and re-read some of the posts to learn all the new ideas.  Thank you for all the enthusiasm and the effort, and I will see you all in the next challenge!

Chow Day 07:45 ( breakfast ):

Breakfast used to be my favorite meal of the day......

Let's see what we've got:

Clockwise from coffee at top-left:

• Instant coffee (2) ( An MRE is incomplete without joe )
• Sweetened condensed milk (2!) ( I've been using these for camping for a while now. AN excellent product. I've seen sweetened condensed mik in some other nations' rations, but never in a US MRE, too bad! )
• True Lemon beverage base
• Almond butter ( With nothing to put it on?! Typical! )
• Hot Cocoa mix
• Freeze dried eggs with beans, cheese, peppers, and spices
• Beef jerky bar

On a cold morning, I might be able to put a good portion of this grub away, but with rising temps my appetite has diminished. So....I just targeted a coffee and that delectable sounding  "Summit Scramble".

Coffee first: used my June Pocket Rocket Challenge knife to carefully open the packets and the little homemade alcohol stove to get my water boiling away in the canteen cup.

Tasty!

And now I'm awake and ready for breakfast..... But the scramble requires a 15 minute rehydration period before it is ready. At higher elevations, even more time is required. The directions called for 1.25 cups of water. I added just a shade over 1 cup. And waited......and waited.....

Soup is up!   :(

Way too much water ( though I added less than called for ). The flavor was good, especially after adding a packet of Sriracha hot sauce, but the texture was disappointing. The beans were 100% hydrated, the eggs were only 90% hydrated and needed more time. There was no evidence of the reported cheese and the peppers were noticed only upon visual inspection as little orange bits. Or was that the cheese?

While this had decent flavor ( if a bit salty ), I would call this meal a FAIL. Eating this on a lark during a challenge is fine. But if I were on my 5th night in the woods or my plastic-bag-filled foxhole, I would not be looking forward to breakfast. I'd probably skip breakfast altogether ( excepting the coffee; goes without saying ). The excess water left me feeling very full. I didn't think I'd want more than the eggs beforehand, now I'm doubting I'll want lunch! That is why the Summit Scramble is a fail for an MRE in my eyes.

To to pack up and ruck out......

Nice one for being the Pioneer on this one comis - you were first off the starting block and first finisher.

Quote
The GSMRE has been packed away long enough that I forgot what some of the components were.....so I still had a little sense of surprise

I think this is what I like most about an actual MRE - you never know what you're going to get, and it's quite often a good surprise. Admittedly I wouldn't want to live off them but comparing the testing Nix and I did with complete MRE's and put together MRE's I'd definitely go for the novelty factor of the complete MRE.

Just coming up to tea time here, I am looking forward to my next meal.

Pics to follow.....

Beautiful little puukko you got there, Borg!  :tu:

Snacks look great too  :pok:

Thanks Aleph, i hadn't really looked at Wood Jewel knives before but when i saw this i just had to get it, it's been a favourite of mine since, really well made and takes a wicked edge, down the line i will certainly get a larger one just to have but the little one does extremely well  :tu:

Lunch, Nice day so decided to go out for lunch, i went with the Noodles as i was a bit concerned if i had them for dinner i would be hungry ten minutes later, needlessly i think as im still stuffed so late dinner it is

Nothing to do with MRE but i saw this nice bit of woodland with the wall that once held stock, the sheep and cows have long gone and here it stands in the middle of what is now a forest, looks nice but shows how places change in time

So here is the chosen lunch spot

And here is lunch, boil the noodles for 5 minutes then drain and add the Ginger, shallots, sauce and little black seed things and stir fry for a couple of minutes

I boiled them up then boiled the kettle for coffee just because i wanted everything ready at the same time, i could have done both together but the noodles needed 5 mins frying, well i say frying but i didn't have oil so basically just cook it a bit with everything added

Getting a good head of steam  :tu:

Noodles ready, now for the coffee

Coffee made and noodles back on with the rest of the ingredients

And done, i have to say i will buy these noodles again, very nice, the packet calls for chicken that i don't have so i think would be even better with that, especially if i had oil and can actually fry the lot  :tu:

Then heading home, stopped for a rest and drank the Fanta and watched the world go by for a bit, well that's not true, nothing went by, only clouds..and i think a Buzzard

LUNCH

Tuna salad kit, consisting of tuna, a packet of sweet pickle relish, anda packet of reduced calorie mayonnaise (top mixture) with crackers plus Texas Pete

Salmon salad, consisting of salmon and a packet of mayonnaise obtained from a fast food restaurant (bottom mixture) and Ritz crackers plus Texas Pete

Peaches
Peanut Butter M&Ms (not shown)
Drink mix

To my surprise, the tuna salad was better than the salmon salad despite my enormous preference for the mayonnaise used with the salmon. The bit of pickle relish really helped.

Discovered one major oversight with my GSMRE. While I did pack napkins, plastic baggie, and a spoon, I forgot about a fork or even a spork. How do I eat my peaches?
