Attn Elite MTO members: count your toilet paper
on: January 27, 2022, 03:19:10 PM
Well before The Pandy developed in early 2020, I had about a year's worth of toilet paper hoarded in the Powernoodle Secret Underground Bunker.  After the worst of The Pandy was over and the TP supply rebounded, I added another ~360 rolls of TP to my stash.  This happened mostly by picking up one 30 pack of Charmin every time I went to Costco.  My current count is 720 rolls, which will easily supply two people for more than two years.   That's about 24x of those 30 packs.  Enough to build a Charmin igloo, a.k.a. a Shigloo or Poogloo.

And I make no apologies for it.  You have your mental issues, and I have mine.  I also had several cases of N95 masks hoarded before The Pandy, which suddenly didn't seem so stupid when The Pandy struck.  :salute: :salute: :salute:

I also hoard emergency food, water, dog and cat food, firearms, ammo, generators and gasoline, lights and batteries, and most importantly of course MTs.  And 108 rolls of paper towels.  But that is for another thread.

How many rolls of toilet paper are in your crib right now?  In my view, even a sane person should have at least 90 rolls.  That's only 22 rolls per person in a family of four, which would disappear pretty quickly the next time the shelves are empty.

We certainly saw our shortages here and shelves for some things continue to be empty.  TP at my local costco was not available last time I was there.  No judgement here in the least  :salute:

We've always bought certain items each time we go to the store regardless of need.  I don't know how many rolls we have but we are pretty decently stocked as we were prepandemic.  Our goal has been 3 months but we were a little better off than that.  Water continues to be something we will have to find a solution for.

I'm married to an environment-saving mother who refuses to use disposable nappies or disposable wipes for her kids, so the idea of washable alternatives to toilet paper is something I quite easily got on board with.
I'm also an essential worker, who is a field operative, but based at what is now a mostly-empty office, where there are 2-3 months' supplies of bog roll and kitchen towel for about 960 staff members... not including all the Blue Roll and other viable alternatives.
I'm also also an avid outdoor activities sort of person, with a military background, so I have no qualms about using nettle leaves, goose feathers or even sandpaper.
But finally, I've had periods in my life where I've not had what many people consider to be basic things in life... like food... so have learned how to 'aquire' enough to keep me going.

So while y'all're holed up in your secret survival bunkers, I'm wandering the wastelands as happy as Carl McCoy! :D

Water continues to be something we will have to find a solution for.

I like these.  I did rock several of the 7-gallon versions, but when full of water they weigh close to 60 lbs / 27 kg.  So I replaced them with the 4-gallon flavor for more easy handling.  These are supplemented with a few 6-packs of 1 gallon water bottles from Costco.

goose feathers

I tried that once, but the goose was seriously not happy with me.

Try factoring the goose in as a meal... or two, depending on its size. Any objections the fella may have will thus be negated.

How much toilet paper have I got?

Not enough.

No, seriously.  I have maybe one pack (24 pack) in the closet that we are maybe 3-4 rolls into.  I generally order more from Amazon when there are only a few rolls left, but inevitably run dangerously close to running out before the Amazon delivery, so I end up buying a small 6 roll pack at the grocery store to tide me over.

It's one of those things I really need to pay closer attention to..    :ahhh

It’s interesting that I’m not the only one who does this. I go for the 9 pack if I didn’t have a chance to get a 24 pack in the local warehouse club. More than anything, it’s the storage space that’s a premium though.

Cultural side note here: more than the TP, gotta make sure the water supply is always good and bidets and tanks don’t leak.

Face masks are a totally different matter. N95 is pricey here. We settled for the Korean KF94. A lot better than China KF95 (which I blame for my Covid). We have less than a hundred of each so that’s not much for a family of 4, but we don’t go out these days anyway and don’t wear them at home anymore (quarantine/isolation completed).

Paper towels are also in demand plus alcohol by the gallon.

Hope Y’all get through it ok

I have at least one unopened 24-pack on hand. Probably should sock away some more.

On the other hand, there is enough food in my house that I could easily survive a six-month deployment.

So true, best for house cleaning too!

We normally have three rolls in the bathroom at all times, a 9 pack that stays in the one closet for emergency’s yet in the main closet the whole shelf is stocked, maybe 24 rolls?

Just an idea: do the meal part before the TP substitute part.

Costco had no toilet paper about a month ago, which I think resulted from an Omicron surge buying frenzy.

Costco baby wipes are excellent, and a perfectly suitable replacement for toilet paper.  Even better in many respects.  They are sold in boxes of 900, and I have a few of those too.  Seems to me that baby wipes could completely replace toilet paper.  Rubbing dry wood pulp across your sphincter seems not only unnecessary but barbaric.

Just watch out they don't create a "fatberg" and block your sewage pipes   :o

Here in Oz we are instructed not to flush wet wipes as they don't always move freely through the pipes.

It's more about the fact that they don't break down, so will clog any debris screens and/or catch on any of the numerous corners and snag points along the sewer route.

Some are marketed as being "flushable" or "designed for flushing"... but they're not. Only a couple of brands have actually been certified as such.

I get my TP in a carton of 48 from https://au.whogivesacrap.org/products/double-length-48-pack-best-value

A carton lasts about a year for two people.

The bottom layer of the carton rather helpfully has the TP wrapped in red paper with a warning to remind you to order your next carton.....

Toilet paper, very interesting topic. We currently have five rolls in stock. If we then have 2 rolls left, we buy another pack with 12 rolls, which is enough for about 3 months. (We're just a small family)

No shortage for months, and now there's a shortage again. Went to Coles twice, no TP in sight. I'm good for now, but will be checking until I hit the Jackpot.

My goal is for food and toilet paper storage to match each other. If we run out of food we likely wont need much toilet paper. A complicating factor is that the other way around doesn't hold, so food should be prioritized more. A factor in favor of a balance more tipped towards toilet paper is that (all) food doesn't have to be bought around here and thus stored supply is less critical.

On the private level we haven't really seen any shortages at all, although some suppliers have said later it was a close call for some product lines when people starting hoarding early on.

On a professional level though supplies of various products have become difficult - either not available at all, not in the quantities needed, or with long and uncertain dates for back in stock. And freight costs and freight times have multiplied in some instances. I'm hoping this will get more normal soon, but for now these factors has made it very difficult to plan or make commitments. It also means we need to order earlier and keep more in stock which adds to the overall problem if everyone does that - kind of hoarding at the professional level. And keeping stock is not a wanted exercise at all - neither space wise or financially.

Went into an actual store for the first time in months (deliver to home since the Omicron surge) and whilst the stocks were certainly better than they have been previously there was some items, namely crisps, that appear to still be in short supply.

At our next place I'm looking forward to staring up a prep storage, but i won't be as comprehensive as the Powernoodle compound  :ahhh

Is this just a basement or a dedicated storage building? If we have a patio/balcony been toying with the idea of a small locking outdoor storage container.
