Day 22: fixed dinner (a frozen pizza)

What I didn't do with the 110 was open my new bed in a box. I went to the trauma shear/seatbelt cutter/rescue knife box and got one of each out. I actually cut the plastic the mattress was vacuum-packed in with a tiny Classic SD, as it was in my sweatpants pocket at the time.   Funny thing is that only one of these, the Dual Pro X, has been used in an emergency situation, and it was a sheep who got its legs caught in baler twine. A pointed blade would've made matters worse, and with the sheep flailing around, would've probably got me hurt as well.

My heavy scissors are X-Shears, but I couldn't find the pair I had. They've quit making them in green. They cut through the quarter-inch-thick cardboard box (which had the flaps glued on top of each other, so a knife tip couldn't be used) without issue. A member here recommended them, and I originally bought them for a first aid kit, but they've been used on everything else.

https://xshear.com/

Now the annoying part--sleeping in the floor on my old mattress for two days to ensure the darn thing is fully expanded. By tomorrow night, it will have been roughly a day and a half--so I'm hoping it's good by then; as the manufacturer recommends 24-48 hours.

:like:

I got a parcel from Victorinox today and got the 110 ready to open it only to realise it had a pull tab and didn’t need a knife.
You're not alone. I see a package sealed with tape, out comes the blade!

Day 23
Good morning all.  I used the Buck 110 this morning to cut about 2 feet of paracord for a lanyard for a fixed blade knife.  The knife, a DPx HEST sits very low in the sheath so there's not a lot to grab onto to get the knife out of the sheath.  With the finished lanyard I have a good sized loop to get my little finger through which really makes a dramatic improvement in the ease of drawing the knife from the sheath.

I stopped eating soap in the fourth grade....hmmmm....maybe it was the fifth....so I don't worry about the gluten content of my soap these days. Still, awl-way nice to know you can eat the soap if you want......

My Garberg has that issue, though not quite bad as the HEST. However, I have few worries about it wiggling out of there.

Nothing too exciting just chopping onions. A job the 110 does rather well.

I almost couldn't find it when I last bought a pack last month; as they'd recently changed the packaging. I think it's because they're trying to appeal to a younger generation. My folks have used it for years, I've used it for years.

Axe and Old Spice don't do a good enough job keeping me clean. Plain old Irish Spring in bar form does (as does dish soap, but it dries out my skin too badly--so I save that for days when I'm covered in grease or mud). Lye soap works well too, but it's even harsher than Irish Spring, and is nigh impossible to find in stores. I only find it at the occasional small business--pharmacies and feed stores.

Day 23: I"m back on my trusty old Kyocera DuraForce PRO 2 instead of that crappy, flimsy/fragile LG aimed at prepaid customers I kept as a spare, and I can keep the Kyocera with me as it's rugged.

Fixed my vacuum cleaner with a bit of the Handyman's Secret Weapon. I'm not paying $20 for a replacement latch (which has been missing for 3 years).  A buddy of mine is buying a 3-D printer, but I can't find a file for the particular Shark model I have (they're all different). Guess I'll have time to figure out a setup in Autodesk, and well learn how to use Autodesk.

In the meantime, a few cents of duct tape weekly isn't that expensive.

Cut weed eater string and trimmed the edges to fit in the auto-load model.

It is quite yummy and probably very good for the midi-chlorians.  I consume it over rice for extra yum yum.

Day 24
Went for an early dinner at a local Italian place that we like and got dessert to bring home.  This is called the Mile High Carrot Cake.  It is a "mile high" because the carrot cake sits on top of a cinnamon cheesecake.  There's enough sugar in this combo cake to put me in a diabetic coma just from looking at it for too long, so, I'm not allowed to actually eat any of it.  I was, however, "allowed" to pose my Buck 110 on it for today's picture and my portion was getting to lick off the knife.  I'll never admit to it in court, but I may have given the knife a bit of a twist as I pulled it out and might even have re-posed it once to, you know, get a better angle.

Day 24: did some shopping.

Lowe's FINALLY started stocking Knipex. The 125mm Cobra has surprised me in what those little pliers could tackle, but for the big stuff, 250mm are more adequate. But, no one's getting them but me. My Channellock 442s have a similar jaw, and if someone loses or breaks them, I'm out $15, not $36. Looks like at present, a pair of needlenose pliers, two different pairs of linesman's pliers (with and without fish tape pullers), side cutters, and the Cobras are carried in the electrical tools. My Lowe's only had the Cobras (but also had a peg for the side cutters), and I bought the last pair.

The CRKT Piet I've been wanting for a couple years now. It is really lightweight, and tough. It's 3 3/4" closed, my sweet spot. The oversized choil is my only problem--could've added a quarter-inch to the blade length without it, as it's too small to be a finger choil. I suspect that they were trying to keep the blade length under 3" on purpose, keeping with its design as a "city" knife. I just wanted something that was lightweight shorts friendly, as I'm lacking in the "decent smallish knives with a clip" category.

I had an older Nite Ize Doohickey, and I liked how this one added a Phillips, nail puller, and cutting edge inside the bottle opener. This one works great, but won't be knocking the heavy-duty Proto J-100 off my keys, but instead be a fifth pocket pry tool.

The little Utica Minimaster clone was $3 at Ollie's (a regional discount chain found in the East Coast). Decently put together. I have tools that cost nearer to $20 that are worse. Figure it will be great for a small survival kit, as it has quite an aggressive (but tiny) saw.
